Japan’s most beautiful island ? Miyakojima Island Trip in December.
Is it worth going to Okinawa in winter?
Okinawa can be cool in winter actually. Pools are closed. Should we still go to Okinawa in winter? I had a chance to visit Miyakojima island in mid December, and explored the island.
I went to several different locations in Miyako island (Miyakojima) and surrounding islands.
What to know about Miyakojima
Miyakojima is attractive because of its strong access from Tokyo by having two airports in the region. The beaches of Miyakojima is more beautiful with white powdery sands, comparing with beaches of Okinawa main islands or Ishigaki Islands.
Miyakojima is
- good for who likes ...
Nature, casual resort stay, a peaceful time in the small country side island.
- Not for who likes ...
1. Activities- such as sight seeing. You can enjoy more in Okinawa main island.
2. Party- Few night seen in Miyakojima, if you want to dress up and go out, stay in the Naha in Okinawa main island, or ... maybe that's not what you can expect in Japan.
3. Luxury hotel stay. Tokyu Hotel is not 5 star. No room service, no pool service. Definitely not for executives who are used to 5 star class service in Bali or Thailand. Miyakojima still lucks the number of hotels until they open Hilton and Rosewood. Meanwhile, I recommend you to go to Okinawa and stay at Halekulani.

# 7 Yoron Island - Otherwise known as Yoronjima or Yoronto, Yoron Island is one of the Amami Islands off Kyushu and belongs to the Amami Gunto Quasi-National Park. The island is famed for its pellucid waters and watersports possibilities such as sea kayaking, diving, and swimming.
# 6 Tokashiki Island - is the largest of the Kerama Islands. Although slightly lagging behind Zamami's popularity, Tokashiki offers several nice beaches while its interior is mostly covered by forested hills and offers a few hiking trails and observation decks.
# 5 Kotohiki - The gem is known as Kotohiki Beach, located on the side of Sea of Japan in the Kyoto prefecture. Stunning golden white sand can be seen for miles and though the water is rough, there is a crescent if you walk far enough with stunning views of towering cliffs and slightly calmer waters. Granted I didn’t go during the peak season, but the crowds were fairly low, and there were plenty of places to relax.
# 4 Cape Maeda - is a cool beach because there is an area where the kids can play in the sand and if you go on a low tide day, they can wade in the water nicely. Also, just to the right of the sand, there is great diving/snorkeling area. My stepson found a cool starfish and some “neat-o mosquito”-looking fish (his words). Also, if anyone is interested, the actual Maeda Point is great for diving/snorkeling/surfing and they also have a mild hiking area–mild being for beginners who just want to take a stroll and have a nice view of the beach. The sand at Maeda Flats is great for burying your family, too!
# 3 Sunayama Beach - Just 4km north of the Hirara district of Miyakojima city, you'll find this little, archetypally tropical Japan beach, which lies at the bottom of a large sand dune (hence the name 'Sand Mountain Beach'). If you've only got one beach day to spend, or are getting around via bus, park yourself here. Find showers and toilets here, too.
# 2 Shirahama - is a resort town on the south coast of Wakayama Prefecture. Its beaches has been white sand from the olden days, but some sand was imported from Perth, Australia when waves and typhoons had washed away some sand during the 1980s[1]. Shirahama is known for its hot springs. During the summer months of July and August there are fireworks every night on the beach.
# 1 Ishigaki Island - also known as Ishigakijima, is a Japanese island south-west of Okinawa Hontō and the second-largest island of the Yaeyama Island group. It is within the City of Ishigaki in Okinawa Prefecture. The city functions as the business and transport center of the archipelago. The island is served by New Ishigaki Airport, the largest airport in the Yaeyamas.

Miyako Island (Miyakojima), located 300 kilometers south of Okinawa Main Island, is known for some of Japan's best beaches and as a great destination for diving and snorkeling in the coral reefs.
The island is the fourth largest island in Okinawa Prefecture. It is mostly covered by sugar cane fields and a few towns, among which Hirara is the largest with a moderate range of eating place, such as restaurants and bars. Resort hotels and pensions are found across the island. Unlike other parts of Okinawa, there are no habu snakes in Miyako.
Miyako Island offers a small range of other attractions, including places of natural beauty and cultural interest, and a couple of elegant bridges to neighboring islands.
Tropical Botanical Garden
It is a spacious park for recreation and the study of tropical plants in inland Miyako. Several walking trails with the over 1600 types of plants that include trees, bushes and flowers from Miyako and from Hawaii, Taiwan and Southeast Asia.

Miyako Island is a relatively small island, measuring about 25 kilometers from south to north and about 15 kilometers from east to west.
A rental car is the most convenient means of getting around Miyako.

The Beaches of Miyako Island
There are picturesque sand beaches for swimming and relaxing. While the beaches are open year round. Best enjoyable months are from April to November when the air temperature consistently tops 25 degrees and the water is very warm.
Sunayama Beach
With its beautiful white sand, clear blue waters and rock formations, Sunayama Beach is one of Miyako's most beautiful beaches. It is reached in a short walk over a sand hill from the parking lot. Its facilities include showers and toilets.
Access Information:
Miyako Island is a relatively small island, measuring about 25 kilometers from south to north and about 15 kilometers from east to west.
A rental car is the most convenient means of getting around Miyako.

Cape Higashi-Hennazaki
The cape of Higashi-henna-zaki (東平安名岬) is a nationally-designated Place of Scenic Beauty located at the southeasternmost point of Miyako. At the very end of the cape is a white lighthouse which gives 3200 panorama view of the ocean, a very popular spot for sunrise viewing.
