A Close-Up Look at the amazing HEREFORD, UK

The cathedral city of Hereford sits on the banks of the River Wye. Hereford is situated in the West Midlands region of England. The city has good train links with Wales, Midlands and the North West and the occasional train to London.

Link to map of the walk

There is plenty to see and do in Hereford. Visit the cathedral and see the Mappa Mundi. Clergymen drew the map of the world in 1290. If you like museums then head to the Black and White house museum with its local history or maybe try the Hereford museum and art gallery. For open spaces head to College Green for views of the River Wye. Shoppers won't be disappointed as Hereford has an indoor and outdoor market. There are plenty of independent shops and your usual big brand shops.

Walking in Hereford, UK!

A walk through Hereford, starting in the town centre, we make our way towards the cathedral before having a look around inside. This is an experimental video which was filmed in a single take with no background music and no edits.

It is my intention to make more of these in future, and while i worked hard to ensure as little shakiness as possible here, it is also my intention to buy a camera stabilizer at some point which should help a great deal. The footage was also filmed on a very windy day which meant there was some wind noise at times during the video sadly.

Anyhow, hope you enjoy, and be sure to subscribe for more content (^_^)

Hereford

A Walk Around This Cider Loving Town

4K WALKING IN HEREFORD ENGLAND

Hereford (/ˈhɛrɪfərd/ (About this sound listen)) is a cathedral city, civil parish and county town of Herefordshire, England. It lies on the River Wye, approximately 16 miles (26 km) east of the border with Wales, 24 miles (39 km) southwest of Worcester, and 23 miles (37 km) northwest of Gloucester. With a population of 58,896,[1] it is the largest settlement in the county.

The name Hereford is said to come from the Anglo-Saxon here, an army or formation of soldiers, and the ford, a place for crossing a river. If this is the origin it suggests that Hereford was a place where a body of armed men forded or crossed the Wye. The Welsh name for Hereford is Henffordd, meaning old road, and probably refers to the Roman road and Roman settlement at nearby Stretton Sugwas. Much of the county of Herefordshire was Welsh-speaking, as reflected in the Welsh names of many places in the county (see History of Herefordshire).

An early town charter from 1189 granted by Richard I of England describes it as Hereford in Wales.[2] Hereford has been recognised as a city since time immemorial, with the status being reconfirmed as recently as October 2000.[3][4]

It is now known chiefly as a trading centre for a wider agricultural and rural area. Products from Hereford include: cider, beer, leather goods, nickel alloys, poultry, chemicals, and cattle, including the famous Hereford breed.

HEREFORD CITY AND CATHEDRAL

Hereford is the Cathedral City with the relaxed atmosphere of a country market town. Its origin dates back to Saxon times and today visitors delight in the harmony of a rich heritage and modern facilities.

Hereford Walk: City Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Herefordshire, and around 50 miles southwest of Birmingham, is the city of Hereford.

The earliest record of Hereford dates to around 676 AD, when it became the seat of Putta, Bishop of Hereford. By the 8th century it had grown to become the Saxon capital of West Mercia.

The name 'Hereford' is derived from Anglo-Saxon 'here', meaning a formation of soldiers, and 'ford', meaning shallow river crossing, in reference to the River Wye which runs through the city. Its geographic location, just under 20 miles east of the England-Wales border of today, made it a hotbed of conflicts between the Anglo-Saxons and the Welsh, such as the Battle of Hereford in 760, which resulted in a Welsh victory. The Mercian ruler at the time was King Offa, who would later establish the famous Offa's Dyke - essentially a ditch marking the approximate border between England and Wales.

Sometime before 1052, Hereford Castle was built. It endured multiple sieges. In 1055 the Welsh sacked and burned Hereford, damaging the castle in the process. According to an account from the 16th century, Hereford Castle was once nearly as large as that of Windsor. It has since been reduced to ruin.

One of the oldest churches in the country is found in Hereford. St Peter's Church was built in the 11th century. Its founder, Walter de Lacy, was killed by a fall from the tower in 1085. It predates Hereford Cathedral, which was built between circa 1079 and 1250, with the tower dating from the 14th century. The cathedral contains the largest chained library in the world, i.e. where the books are chained so you can read them at the desk, but not remove them from the bookcase.

In 1189 Hereford was granted a royal charter by Richard I. Early industries in Hereford included wool and leather. The wool industry started to decline around the 17th century, around which point brewing and cider making industries emerged. From around the 18th century, the city would eventually become synonymous with perhaps its most famous product - cattle. The Herefordshire breed, with its distinctive reddish-brown fur and white face, became so popular that it was exported all over the world, starting with the USA in 1817. To date, Hereford cattle has been exported to over 120 countries.

Hereford's first rail connection came in 1853 courtesy of the Shrewsbury and Hereford Railway. Today the station has direct links to Crewe, Newport, Birmingham and Oxford.

Since 1960, the British Army special forces unit - the Special Air Service, commonly referred to as the SAS, has had a regiment based in Hereford. The unit is renowned for its operations in counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, direct action and covert reconnaissance. In the 1998 movie Ronin, Robert De Niro, in reference to this, butchers the pronunciation as 'HEAR-fuhrd'. (For the benefit of anyone outside of the UK, the correct pronunciation is 'HERRA-fuhrd)'.

Hereford is represented in sport by Hereford Football Club. They were founded in 2014 to replace their predecessors, Hereford United, who dissolved during the same year. Both clubs play/played their home games at Edgar Street.

Famous people from Hereford include puppeteer Frank Oz and singer Ellie Goulding.
