Exploring Hammonds Wood and The Mens - WEST SUSSEX WALKS

The Mens is an area of ancient woodland dominated by beech but with oaks and other trees typical of ancient woodland like midland hawthorn and wild service. It's name comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for common land, 'ge-m'nnes'.

This is a shot 10-mile walk through this ancient woodland and out to the banks of the River Arun before turning back into woodland. It is a walk that rewards the hiker with a feeling of magic and being in touch with history.

Hassocks Red Barrows

Soooo, what’s the most random thing we have ever filmed?! (this would be in our top 10 – for sure!)
Let’s go back to the Great British Summer 2023……when it stopped raining. There was a window of opportunity – thankfully we had our camera with us.

An extraordinary spectacle unfolded in a suburban street.....

We had the enormous pleasure to meet and film the legendary Red Barrows! Yes, you heard me correctly, the Red Barrows and what a jolly good show they put on!

Thanks to everyone who was involved, toodle-oo, and pip pip!

SWC Free Walk 50, Hassocks to Brighton. 14/4/13.

Another very pleasant 12 miler in West Sussex that incorporates a variety of scenery.
After a short urban section in Hassocks, the walker is soon on a former Roman road and heading towards Ditchling, with its attractive church. Then, its on across meadows and through woodland prior to the ascent of Ditchling Beacon, where lunch is had, with some fine views.
Thereafter, it's on across the Downs and through more woodland to arrive in the grounds of Stanmer Park. Shortly after, the walker is in the village of Stanmer, with its unusual donkey-powered well and grand house, Stanmer House.
Then, it's on through the grounds of Sussex University and so to the pretty hamlet of Falmer, where the walk can be terminated, if desired.
Continuing on, the walker passes the impressive home of Brighton and Hove Albion, The Amex Stadium, and then on past some less impressive neighbourhoods before reaching the Kemp Town race track.
Thereafter, it's on into bustling Brighton and all it has to offer, which, today, included the death of a marathon runner!

swcwalks, book2, walk23, Hassocks to Shoreham-By-Sea. 16/6/22

Another update of a walk last filmed 12 years ago on the mobile. This 10 miler, undertaken on a balmy day, with a bit of a cooling breeze, starts out from Hassocks station. It isn't long before the walker is ascending the first of several climbs, Wolstonbury Hill. The 'Jack' and 'Jill' windmills at Clayton can be seen on the horizon.
On across grassland, past the small café at Saddlecombe and then along the rim (not the valley floor of the GPX track) of the Devil's Dyke; a wonderful piece of river 'engineering'.
Lunch is had at the viewpoint here, though a busy pub option also exists.
Thereafter, the walker is on the South Downs Way, crossing Fulking escarpment, on past Edburton and Truleigh Hills, and then descending to the 'South Downs' bus stop (not on the GPX track).
After a short bus ride, the walker reaches Shoreham, with its beach, cafes and railway station.
Another very pleasant return to the South Downs after several years' absence. Today's weather added to the enjoyment.
(N.B. Some wind interference. Several fields contained amenable cattle, but one, on Cow Down, had several bullocks in it, which really shouldn't be the case, where a public path crosses.).

SWC Free Walk 108, Burgess Hill to Hassocks. 18/9/11.

Nearly 17 miles of walking through the West Sussex countryside incorporating both the Sussex Border Path and The South Downs Way.
The walker initially follows a path next to the railway line towards Hassocks before branching off across a local park. Thereafter, there's a climb past a water tower before joining the Sussex Border Path for the walk to Ditchling for lunch.
The afternoon section begins with an ascent to Ditchling Beacon for a walk along the South Downs way before the descent into Pyecombe; there's a further climb from there up to Wolstonbury Hill before another descent down to Hurstpierpoint and the journey back to Hassocks.
A delightful day's walking that is full of variety.
(Some wind interference on the commentary).

South Downs Way: Lewes To Hassocks 30 May 2015

A 10 mile walk between Lewes and Hassocks over the South Downs. via the viewpoint of Ditchling Beacon.A significant part of the walk used the South Downs Way long distance footpath. The walk took place in sunny/cloudy bright, but very windy, weather on Saturday 30 May 2015.

Time Out Walks, Book 1, Walk 29, Hassocks to Lewes. 8/1/12

2012 and a welcome return to the outdoors...around 11 miles over The South Downs.
From Hassocks, the walker is soon passing by (or through, if desired) Butcher's Wood and then ascending the ridge past a working windmill. The path soon joins up with the South Downs Way, which the walker follows to pass the high point at Ditchling Beacon and then on to lunch at Plumpton; in this case, it's a picnic, though it could also be at the local pub.
Thereafter, it's a gradual descent through woodland into Offham and then a muddy walk along the banks of The Ouse into the historical town of Lewes.
A very pleasant Downs walk, which isn't too taxing; just what the Doctor ordered, post Christmas!
