10 Most Hated Towns in England

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

Walking The Essex Way from Manningtree to Harwich (4K)

Manningtree to Harwich along the Essex Way shot in 4K
This walk along the Essex Way starts at Manningtree on the border between Essex and Suffolk on the banks of the River Stour. The Essex Way is an 81-mile long distance path that starts in Epping and ends in Harwich. Our walk follows the final section of the Essex Way.

We walk along the Stour to the village of Mistley before turning in inland to Mistley Heath. The path then takes us back along the banks of the river through Wrabness before once again turning inland across wheat fields and past a windmill to the village of Ramsey. Here we turn away from the Stour Estuary towards the North Sea passing through the village of Little Oakley to the coast just south of Harwich. The final stretch of our walk takes us past the Dovercourt lighthouses and Beacon Hill fort to the end of the Essex Way at the lighthouse in Harwich Old Town.

Harwich to Hook of Holland. The Overnight Ferry with Stena Line, MV Stena Hollandica

I think this is a real bargain! When I looked at booking this trip as a foot passenger, it necessitated getting all the way to Harwich which, by train, can mean going into London then back out again. Step forward the 'Dutch Flyer' Stena's Rail and Sail offering in-conjunction with Greater Anglia trains which allows you to buy a combined ticket from any Greater Anglia network station, plus the ferry all the way over to The Netherlands.

So I began my journey from Cromer where I'd been spending the day and it meant I didn't have to go in and out of London. In this video, I'll tell you how to buy and use the ticket, how much it costs and, of course, I'll show you around the ship and we'll have a look at what's on offer, have dinner and take a look at the cabin I got as well.

I'd love to hear your experiences if you've sailed with Stena on this route either on the Dutch Flyer combined ticket or not. Thanks as always guys for watching the video, it really is appreciated and goes a long way in helping me to make more content like this in the future.

Cheers for now.

London Liverpool Street - Harwich International, ferry train for Stena Line - Dutchflyer boat train

The ferry connection between Harwich and Hook of Holland is a great connection for railway passengers, at both sides of the water there's a good connection on the train (now-a-days metro in the Netherlands). In the UK there is even a direct boat train linking London Liverpool Street & Harwich International railway station connecting to and from the Stena Line ferry (both ways and both for the day and night ferry), this train is also known as the Dutchflyer.

Visit Historic Harwich, England

Historic Harwich, possibly the most hospitable town in England. On our recent trip, several members of The Harwich Society greeted us at the train station. Peter Chandler, Harwich Society tour guide, gave us a walking tour of many of the town's historical sites. Next, Ray Plummer, archivist, showed us the old jail and provided much history of it. Finally, Dave McLeod, Mayor of Harwich, and many town officials greeted us in the Guildhall with tea and much hospitality. Indeed, our visit to Harwich was the highlight of our cruise vacation. Ron and Jan Phillips, North Carolina

Harwich Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Essex, and around 70 miles northeast of London, is the town of Harwich.

The town's name is derived from Old English 'here' and 'wīc', meaning 'army camp', allegedly because the Danes camped here in the 9th century. Geographically it stands at the mouth of the River Stour as it feeds into the North Sea. As such, it has been a key ferry port for several centuries.

During the 13th century, the Earl of Norfolk transformed Harwich from a tiny village into a busy town with a grid layout. Wool was exported from its port, while wine was imported upon return. It was the embarkation point of various English fleets during the Hundred Years War with France.

In circa 1570, Christopher Jones was born in Harwich. It was in the town that he learned to become a master mariner. In 1605 he built a ship which he later traded in 1608 for a smaller one called 'Mayflower'. Jones moved to Rotherhithe in 1611, and in 1620 he would transport his ship first to Southampton, then to Plymouth as an emergency stop, and finally to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Whilst originally intended for exporting and importing goods such as wool and wine, Mayflower transported over 100 passengers over the Atlantic in extremely cramped conditions. The passengers were known as the Pilgrims, and they became the first Europeans to settle permanently in North America. Jones's house features just before the 18-minute mark.

Between 1808 and 1810 the Harwich Redoubt was built. Situated on a hilltop just south of the historic town centre, this fort was constructed to safeguard against the threat of Napoleonic invasion, complete with effective artillery power to withstand a lengthy siege. Today it serves as a museum.

In 1818 the High Lighthouse was built. This, alongside another, known as the Low Lighthouse, helped to guide the ships entering Harwich Harbour. However, due to the silting up of the surrounding waters, they became known as 'misleading lights', and their use was discontinued in 1863.

By 1819 the town's original church had become dilapidated. It was pulled down and rebuilt from scratch. Thus, in 1822 St Nicholas Church was consecrated.

During the 1850s the neighbouring settlement of Dovercourt, just to the west of Harwich town centre, began to be developed as a seaside resort. The man largely responsible for its growth was East India merchant John Bagshaw, who discovered a chalybeate spring here. Bagshaw's plan to turn it into one of the great spa towns fell short, and he was declared bankrupt in 1859. Dovercourt forms part of a continuous settlement just adjacent to Harwich's historic town centre.

In 1854 the railway arrived in Harwich with the opening of stations at both the town centre and Dovercourt. This was followed, in 1883, by Harwich International station just to the west - originally known as Harwich Parkeston Quay until 1995. All three stations remain open today, and form the final three stops on the Mayflower Line. This is a branch of the Great Eastern Main Line which links up to Manningtree to the west, which in turn connects to London Liverpool Street and Norwich. Harwich International provides access to the town's ferry port with services to Hoek van Holland.

In 1911 the Electric Palace Cinema opened in Harwich. This is one of the earliest purpose-built cinemas still operating. It closed in 1956 following flood damage a few years earlier, but was restored and reopened in 1981.

Coastal Walk - Harwich, Essex [4K]

A gentle walk along the Esplanade and through the streets of Harwich, past the famous Electric Palace Cinema and on towards the The Quay and Ha'penny Pier

This video was filmed on the morning of Sunday 9th January, 2022

The camera used for filming is a Sony FDR-X3000.

Harwich is a town in Essex, England and is located on the coast with the North Sea to the east. It is in the Tendring district. Nearby places include Felixstowe to the northeast, Ipswich to the northwest, Colchester to the southwest and Clacton-on-Sea to the south. It is the northernmost coastal town within Essex.

Harwich played an important part in the Napoleonic and more especially the two World Wars. Of particular note:

1793-1815—Post Office Station for communication with Europe, one of embarkation and evacuation bases for expeditions to Holland in 1799, 1809 and 1813/14; base for capturing enemy privateers. The dockyard built many ships for the Navy, including HMS Conqueror which captured the French Admiral Villeneuve at the Battle of Trafalgar. The Redoubt and the now-demolished Ordnance Building date from that era.

1914-18—base for the Royal Navy's Harwich Force light cruisers and destroyers under Commodore Tyrwhitt, and for British submarines. In November 1918 the German U-boat fleet surrendered to the Royal Navy in the harbour.

1939-1945—one of main East Coast minesweeping and destroyer bases, at one period base for British and French submarines; assembled fleets for Dutch and Dunkirk evacuations and follow-up to D-Day; unusually, a target for Italian bombers during the Battle of Britain.

Harwich Dockyard was established as a Royal Navy Dockyard in 1652. It ceased to operate as a Royal Dockyard in 1713 (though a Royal Navy presence was maintained until 1829). During the various wars with France and Holland, through to 1815, the dockyard was responsible for both building and repairing numerous warships. HMS Conqueror, a 74-gun ship completed in 1801, captured the French admiral Villeneuve at Trafalgar. The yard was then a semi-private concern, with the actual shipbuilding contracted to Joseph Graham, who was sometimes mayor of the town. During World War II parts of Harwich were again requisitioned for naval use and ships were based at HMS Badger; Badger was decommissioned in 1946, but the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service maintained a headquarters on the site until 1992.

The Royal Navy no longer has a presence in Harwich but Harwich International Port at nearby Parkeston continues to offer regular ferry services to the Hook of Holland (Hoek van Holland) in the Netherlands.
