PORTLAND, Maine: Gloomy, Grey & Beautiful

I visited the chilly city of Portland, a city in the U.S. state of Maine, set on a peninsula extending into Casco Bay. The Old Port waterfront features working fishing wharves and converted warehouses with restaurants and shops. It was a gray, gloomy day when I visited but that didn't hide the beauty.

BEST Way to Spend a Day in Portland, Maine

Portland, Maine is the largest city in the state of Maine and is the perfect place to start your adventure in Maine. I only had a day in the city, so I made the most of it by exploring the city from the land and sea while enjoying fresh, amazing food and checking out the different sights. When you have only have one day, here is the best way to spend a day in Portland, Maine.

I start off my adventure by visiting the iconic Portland Head Light in nearby Cape Elizabeth while also walking around Fort Williams Park. I then head into downtown Portland to check out the beautiful architecture downtown has to offer, enjoy a lobster roll at the Highroller Lobster Co, and check out the waterfront. When exploring the waterfront, make sure to go on a cruise on the Casco Bay while you get the best views of Portland from the water and see the many islands in the bay up close. Later, I head back into the city to get the best views of Portland and the Casco Bay from the top of the Portland Observatory before getting some poutine from Duckfat Fritteshack. I conclude by getting some views of the bay and the harbor from Fort Allen Park and from Bug Light Park in South Portland.

How To Spend A Weekend In Portland Maine | Portland, Maine

We took a quick weekend trip up to Portland Maine to explore a wonderful part of the New England territory. We ate some delicious and fresh lobster rolls, visit the Portland Museum of Art, explored the downtown area, and plenty more

When we were there it was a little cloudy and rained a little but that didn't stop us from having fun and enjoying the best of this city!

On day 1 we went to Eventide Oyster Co. Their lobster rolls are unique in that they come in the Asian-inspired bun with a nice butter sauce. It might not look like it, but the lobster roll was packed out with lobster meat. What surprised us was definitely their clam chowder which had seaweed, potatoes, bacon, and large chunks of clams. It was incredibly fresh and had an umami flavor to it which threw us off but it was great! We can't stop raving about this spot. But be sure to order online prior unless you like to wait an hour for a table.

We then head to the Portland Head Lighthouse, which is known to be the most photographed lighthouse in America! But after spending some time there we could definitely see why that is. No matter what angle you photograph from, you'll always get a great shot of the lighthouse.

Right by the lighthouse is another famous lobster roll stand called Bite Into Maine which offers a more traditional lobster roll along with additional unique flavors. We opted for the traditional Maine lobster roll and the picnic-style lobster roll. With these, there was a pile of massive chunks of lobster which surprised us. Their lobster rolls were perfectly creamy and with the added lemon juice you get a nice freshness and tang to the roll! Definitely, a must when in Portland!

We end our day exploring Downtown Portland and checking out the cute shops and soaking in the New England culture. It was such a great way to end the day and walk off all the lobster we ate throughout the day.

Day 2 started early. We had booked a morning trip with the Portland Schooner. They are a sailing company that offers sailing rides throughout the day on their boats. It was incredibly fun. The day we went, the weather was a little less than ideal. But we made the most of it and had a great time. It was cool to see them hoist the sail and take us around the coast of Portland.

Afterward, we head over to the highly-rated Holy Donut which is special because their donuts have potatoes in them! So interesting. When we had arrived, there was a long line to get it. We waited for about 20 mins and were finally let in. They offer some seasonal flavors that are all incredibly good. We bought half a dozen of assorted flavors and can't stop thinking about them. We went back a second time on our trip they were that good!

After getting our donuts we wanted to go somewhere indoors and what better way to spend a day indoors than in a museum, so we went to the Portland Museum of Art. A wonderful museum that houses a bunch of different pieces from different eras. We spent the remainder of the day here and had a wonderful time!

Portland is the largest city in the U.S. state of Maine and the seat of Cumberland County. Portland's population was 68,408 in April 2020. The Greater Portland metropolitan area is home to over half a million people, the 104th-largest metropolitan area in the United States. Portland's economy relies mostly on the service sector and tourism. The Old Port is known for its nightlife and 19th-century architecture. Marine industry plays an important role in the city's economy, with an active waterfront that supports fishing and commercial shipping. The Port of Portland is the second-largest tonnage seaport in New England.

The city seal depicts a phoenix rising from ashes, a reference to recovery from four devastating fires.[6] Portland was named after the English Isle of Portland, Dorset. In turn, the city of Portland, Oregon was named after Portland, Maine. The word Portland is derived from the Old English word Portlanda, which means land surrounding a harbor. The Greater Portland area has emerged as an important center for the creative economy, which is also bringing gentrification.
