Q: How long was the trip?
A: Around 18 days. But I would say it's doable in 2 weeks. If you want more time to explore then 3 weeks should be more than adequate.
Q: How many days do I need in each city?
A: I would say 3-5 days in Kyoto and Osaka. Nara 1-2 days. At least 4-6 days in Tokyo but the more the better.
Q: How much did it cost?
A: Excluding hotels + airplane tickets we had a budget of around 2000 USD
Q: Is there vegan restaurant options in Japan?
A: Yes, I found plenty, and most restaurants offer vegan-friendly meals
Q: Which month did you go?
A: We visited in July but I would recommend visiting in either the Autumn or Spring season

Morioka is a city on Japan’s Honshu island. Iwate Park, known for its spring cherry blossoms and fall colors, is home to the ruins of 17th-century Morioka Castle.
Nearby, Ishiwarizakura is a centuries-old cherry tree growing from a cracked boulder. Hoonji Temple houses hundreds of Buddhist statues. Kaiunbashi Bridge offers views of Mount Iwate. To the west, there are hot springs at Tsunagi, on the shore of Gosho Lake.

Come along with TG and me to Hanamaki Onsen in Iwate prefecture. It is surrounded by an abundance of nature and consists of four Japanese-style hotels. Outdoor baths and many places of interest, including the best rose garden in Iwate and a flower bed with a sun clock designed by Kenji Miyazawa! We'll take a 90 min flight from Kobe Airport to Hanamaki Airport, which is about 40 mins south of Morioka.

200-year-old Japanese Hot Springs Inn for $30 per Night?! (Osawa Onsen in Hanamaki, Iwate)
Osawa Onsen is the very first hot springs I visited when I first came to Japan a couple of decades ago. It hasn't changed a bit during that time. I've only really experienced the cheapest of the 3 sections, the Tojiya. But if you're a higher budget traveler that I would very much recommend the thatched roof Kikusuikan or the more luxurious modern Japanese style of the Kikusuikan. They are all run by the same owner.
The base price for the Tojiya is actually 2750 yen, or around $26 actually. But they add on a few dollars for the heater, kotatsu, yukata, towel, sheets, pillow, etc. So when I went it ended up being around 4,000 yen, or roughly $37. Regardless of a few dollars here or there, it's a great experience!

New Year of the ???? Rabbit at a very large and classy Japanese Hot Spring in the snowy Iwate mountains with Kaiseki dinner and Breakfast buffet. We went here just after New Year so the decoration and foods are reflecting the Holidays season. It was rather crowded since Japanese people love to spend new year in a place where they can relax and not cook, but there were times when the hot spring bath was absolutely empty and I could get some images of it, to help you choose this location as your future travel destination!
