What to do in Japan in Winter

I spent a week traveling around central Japan, and here are some things you can do in Nagano Prefecture in the winter!

In part 1 of my Japan winter series, I visited the beautiful mountains in Chino and Komagane city in Nagano.

The views at the top of Mt. Kurumayama and Senjojiki Cirque were breathtaking and best of all you can get to the top easily by a ski lift or cable car.
For those who want more of a workout, it's a great starting place to hike to the other mountains in the Japan alps!

Stay tuned for part 2 where I share with you what you can do around the city and a hidden gem in Nagano!

Who are Kara and Nate?!
Watch our documentary here:

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small printing business from the spare bedroom of our apartment.

We discovered the world of “travel hacking” while planning our honeymoon & became addicted ;)

So after 2 years of obsessively saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world.

Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we ran out of money and went back home to “normal life.” We started this travel vlog to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with living on the road and found a new passion for capturing our travels through video. So we did everything we could to keep going.

4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time.

After ~2 years of van life, we are back to full time traveling! And now we are finding the best adventures the world has to offer :)

We are incredibly grateful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. ???????????? Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey :)

JAPAN TRAVEL VLOG ????????⛷ | Skiing in Hakuba Snow Village, Nagano ❄️

With Japan being known for its powdery slopes, it’s undeniable a ski trip to Japan was a part of my Japan bucket list waiting to be ticked off for the longest time. February is one of the coldest months which makes it perfect for a 5-day ski trip to Hakuba in #Nagano, #Japan this year in 2023.

Located a 3.5 hour train ride from Tokyo, or a 6 hour bus ride from Narita, Hakuba is home to stunning panoramic landscapes of the surrounding alps; a great option for those looking for where to ski near Tokyo. Its variety of terrains and slopes make it a place that's suitable for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. However, that being said, I should’ve researched which slopes to start with first so that I did not have to struggle as much ???? So I've listed some slopes for you here, so you won't have to roll down the slopes like I did ????:

⛷ Night skiing in Hakuba:
- Hakuba Goryu Ski Resort

⛷ Best slopes for beginners in Hakuba:
- Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort
- Tsugaike Mountain Resort
- Iimori Ski Resort
- Hakuba Goryu Ski Resort

⛷ Best slopes for intermediate skiers in Hakuba:
- Hakuba Happo-One Snow Resort (this snow resort stretches over a very large area so you might need more than 1 day to cover it)
- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Snow Resort
- Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort

But the best part of it all is that you don’t really have to ski to be able to experience all of this! There are gondola lifts that take you up to the mountains, and beautiful observatory decks I’m sure would look picturesque in other seasons as well.

I went with a large group so we rented out a ski chalet Airbnb for this trip located in Iwatake, mainly relied on shuttle buses, walking and very rarely the taxi services at Hakuba. I’ve posted additional details of this trip below in case they may be of help in planning a ski/snowboarding trip in Japan!
