Hawaii is made up of many islands, atolls and cays. But only 6 are the main islands, or rather, only 6 are the most visited islands, and each of these islands has its own distinctive character, cultural history and activities to experience.

Referred to as The Gathering Place, Oahu is one of the 6 most visited islands in Hawaii, with many popular places to explore, including Waikiki, the North Shore beaches, and Pearl Harbor. The main island of Hawaii is commonly referred to as the Big Island because it is the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago.

Rich in cultural and geographical history, the Big Island is home to 3 active volcanoes, beautiful waterfalls, black sand beaches, coffee shops and more.

Big Island Hawaii top 15 things to do 2022!!!

Big Island Hawaii top 8 things to do 2022
Hawaii is a state that is made up of eight main islands. The largest and most populous island is called The Big Island, which is appropriately named due to its size. It is nearly twice the size of all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined and is home to nearly two-thirds of the state's population.
The Big Island is also the youngest island in Hawaii, as it is still slowly being formed by two active volcanoes. In addition to its stunning landscapes, the Big Island is also home to a number of interesting cultural attractions. Visitors can learn about the history of Hawaii at Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site or explore the vibrant local art scene at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. There is truly something for everyone on the Big Island of Hawaii.

BIG ISLAND HAWAII - The BEST Places to Visit on Hawaii

The Big Island of Hawaii, officially known as Hawaii Island, is the largest and youngest of the Hawaiian Islands. It's a land of diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests and active volcanoes to stunning beaches and astronomical observatories. Here's a description of the Big Island:

Volcanic Majesty:
The Big Island is renowned for its active volcanoes, most notably Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Kilauea has been one of the world's most active volcanoes, with frequent eruptions that shape and reshape the landscape. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a must-visit destination, offering hiking trails, volcanic landscapes, lava tubes, and the mesmerizing glow of lava flows after dark.

Mauna Kea and Astronomy:
Mauna Kea is one of the most significant astronomical observatory sites in the world. With its high elevation and clear skies, it provides ideal conditions for stargazing. The Mauna Kea Observatories house some of the most advanced telescopes, allowing astronomers to explore the universe and unravel its mysteries.

Diverse Landscapes:
The Big Island boasts a remarkable range of landscapes due to its volcanic activity. From the lush Hamakua Coast and the tropical rainforests of Hilo to the arid Kona Coast with its lava fields and pristine beaches, the island offers a visual feast of contrasts.

Black Sand Beaches:
Some of the island's beaches are unique due to their black volcanic sand. Punaluu Black Sand Beach is a popular spot where you can witness sea turtles basking on the shoreline against the backdrop of ebony sands.

Green Sand Beach:
Papakolea Beach, also known as Green Sand Beach, is a rare gem with its olivine crystals that give the sand its distinctive green hue. The beach is located near the southern tip of the island and requires a hike or a 4WD ride to access.

Ancient Hawaiian Culture:
The Big Island has deep historical and cultural significance to the native Hawaiians. The Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park provides a glimpse into ancient Hawaiian life, offering insights into traditional practices, rituals, and the concept of sanctuary.

Coffee and Agriculture:
Kona, on the western side of the island, is famous for its Kona coffee. The region's volcanic soil and unique climate create ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality coffee beans. Visitors can tour coffee farms and learn about the coffee-making process.

Water Activities:
The island's diverse coastline offers various opportunities for water activities. Snorkeling, diving, and swimming are popular along the Kona Coast's clear waters. The rugged Hamakua Coast and the North Kohala area are great for scenic drives and coastal exploration.

Local Cuisine:
The Big Island offers a wide range of dining experiences, from casual local eateries to upscale restaurants. You can savor fresh seafood, tropical fruits, traditional Hawaiian dishes, and international cuisine.

In essence, the Big Island of Hawaii is a captivating blend of geological wonders, cultural richness, and natural beauty. It's a destination that invites exploration, offering a unique opportunity to witness the dynamic forces that shape the Earth while enjoying the relaxed pace of island life.
