Day trip to GYODA, Saitama, Japan from Tokyo
This is a video all about my day trip to Gyoda city in Saitama prefecture Japan. Which is around an hours train ride away from Tokyo central station.
For my visit, I went to:
- See the rice field art from the observation deck of the Kodai Hasu no Sat.
- Saitama Kofun park
- museum of the Saitama ancient burial mounds
- Try the local Jelly fries and Tambo at Kodai hasu no sato
- Visit a traditional sock factory - Kineya tabi
- Grab lunch at ANDO for Soba noodle
- Oshi Castle
- Tasting Jyumangoku manjyu

A suburban area of Tokyo rich in nature and with many tourist sites
Area Characteristics
Saitama is an inland prefecture with more than 7 million people. With an area of 3,797km2（1,466mile2）, it is bigger than the 179th-biggest nation of Samoa（2,842km2＝1,097mile2）. Access to the southern part of the prefecture which includes Omiya and Urawa is excellent as a bedroom community of Tokyo while the northern area which includes the city of Chichibu has plenty of nature.
Major Sites
Saitama Prefecture has Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park among many other sightseeing sites to enjoy nature including the downstream area of Nagatoro Gorge. Along with the landmarks of Saitama New Urban Center and Saitama Super Arena, there is a great variety of spots to see such as The Railway Museum, Bonsai Village and Kawagoe which has been dubbed “Little Edo”.
Food
Soka senbei (rice crackers), Kawagoe potato cakes and Kumagaya gokabo sweets are the 3 famous confections of Saitama. Furthermore, the prefecture is also famous as a treasure house for its comfort food including Kitamoto tomato curry which won a national curry contest, Hatogaya yakiudon (fried udon noodles) which has been recognized as one of the Top 5 yakiudon in Japan, and a form of karaage (deep-fried chicken) whose breading is made from Soka senbei. As well, there is Sayama tea which is among the Top 3 teas in the country and Coedo beer from Kawagoe which has even won acclaim abroad.
Transportation
There are 15 railways operated by JR and private corporations going from Tokyo into Saitama, so these are recommended over buses and cars. It’s customary to take the train from Tokyo Station for Omiya via Ueno or go through Ikebukuro to reach Kawagoe and Chichibu. Although Saitama has plenty of north-south lines, it has a dearth of east-west lines so if you are considering touring through the prefectural sightseeing spots, renting a car is convenient.

Japan Travel - Day in Gyoda Part 2: Ancient Tombs and Samurai Castle
Part 2 of my daytrip to Gyoda in Saitama Prefecture where we explore Sakitama Kofun Park that has 9 ancient tombs known as kofun. The kofun of the area were built between the 5th and 6th Century one of them containing an engraved sword.
After the kofun we walked to Oshi Castle subject of a recent book and movie , Nobo no Shiro (The Floating Castle). In 1590 the castle was besieged by forces of Toyotomi Hideyoshi as part of his campaign to subdue the Odawara Hojo. The defense of the castle was stronger than expect so the Toyotomi general tried to flood the castle but being on higher ground, Oshi Castle survived the float and earned the nickname the Floating Castle.

Castle Ground Explorations - Gyoda
One of the amazing things about Japan is its preservation of architecture. This is the Oshio Gyoda Castle. It's in perfect condition and is well into it's hundreds age wise.
It's nice to be able to take walks through quiet, pristine places like this and take in the history and aesthetic of Japan.
Gyoda far from Tokyo and many travelers may never visit this place. But I highly recommend taking a few days out of your trip and specifically look into smaller towns like this. You can gain a lot from taking the time to explore, outside of the status quo

The city of Gyoda in Saitama Prefecture is known as the birthplace of Saitama. It was once a castle town with Shinobi Castle towering at its center. This castle gained fame as the setting for the movie Nobunaga's Castle and is renowned for withstanding the water attack by Ishida Mitsunari, earning the reputation of an impregnable fortress. The city also boasts historical streets with preserved features like the former tabi (Japanese socks) warehouses. Furthermore, Gyoda has been frequently used as a filming location for dramas and movies, including Shitamachi Rocket, Rikuo, Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai series.
