Porto Alegre Travel Guide - Unique Brazil Exploration
Porto Alegre is the state capital of Rio Grande do Sul and the biggest urban agglomeration of southern Brazil. The perfect blend of Brazilian-Portuguese and River Plate-Spanish cultures, added to a strong European heritage gives the city a unique background within Brazil. The city is one of the richest metropolis in the country, the state capital with the highest life quality and literacy rate (97%), the book capital of Brazil.
The gaúchos are very proud of their land and culture. In 1835 a revolution which declared Rio Grande do Sul independent from Brazil broke out, the most significant national conflict of the Brazilian Empire (1822-1889), named the Farroupilha Revolution or Farrapos War. This war wreaked havoc across the entire state during 10 bloody years, killing nearly 20% of the gaúchos and ultimately leading to a peace treaty where the Republica Riograndense once again became part of Brazil. Another major Brazilian revolution also began in Rio Grande do Sul. The Federalist Revolution of 1893 defended the decentralization of powers and greater autonomy for the states, and only finished in 1895, after spreading to two other states.
It was also in Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre) where the 1930 Revolution which overthrew the president Washington Luis began, and so was from Rio Grande do Sul the most important Brazilian communist revolutionary of all times: Luis Carlos Prestes, who led the nation-wide communist upheaval in 1935. For such reasons, among many others, the Gaúchos (Riograndenses) are particularly proud of their mother state, many considering themselves as gauchos rather than Brazilians. Currently, Porto Alegre is a service centered city in between the industrial part of the state (north-east) and the rural part (south). It is also called the Mercosul Capital.
The city is roughly a semi-circle that expanded outward in a concentric manner, beginning from the historical city center, right next to the promontory and the harbor. Avenues going from the center to the outer areas of the semi-circle are the radiais (radials) and are crossed by avenues named perimetrais (perimeters). There is a rapid transit system (operated by trensurb), which runs from downtown Porto Alegre to some cities north of the metropolitan area. There are 22 stations and 43km of line, plus 2 stations of the aeromovel (people mover, linking the airport to the aeroporto metro station).
One of the most famous foods of Brazil, churrasco (slow-grilled and -roasted meat), originated in Rio Grande do Sul. But cuisine is eclectic here, and rice and beans sit on southern tables beside Italian and German dishes, thanks to the South's many European immigrants. Colonial coffee is the elaborate 5 PM tea, with breads, pies, and German kuchen, popular among the Germans in the South.
Football is a passion of the people from Porto Alegre. There is a big rivalry between two football clubs, Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense, founded in 1903, and Sport Club Internacional, founded in 1909. Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense and Sport Club Internacional currently play in the top league in Brazil, the Serie A. Both have successful histories, having won national and international titles, including the South American top honour, the Copa Libertadores, and the highest global trophy for football clubs, the Intercontinental Cup, now known as the Club World Cup.

Porto Alegre is a Brazilian municipality and the capital of the southernmost state in Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul. With an area of almost 500 km² and a population of 1 492 530 inhabitants, it has a diverse geography, with hills, lowlands and a large lake: the Guaíba. It is 2,027 km from the national capital, Brasília.
The city was founded on the arrival of Azorean couples in the mid-18th century. In the 19th century, it counted on the influx of many German and Italian immigrants, as well as receiving Spaniards, Africans, Poles and Lebanese. Home to the largest urban concentration in the South region and the fifth most populous in Brazil, it developed quickly and is now home to almost 1.5 million inhabitants within municipal limits and around 4,311,019 inhabitants in the metropolitan region. With 37.7% of the population living in apartments, it is the second most verticalized capital in the country, after Vitória (ES). The city faces many challenges, including the fact that part of the population lives in sub-housing conditions, high cost of living, high incidence of obesity and smoking, serious deficiencies in terms of pollution, degradation of original ecosystems, high crime rates and growing traffic problems.
On the other hand, it boasts more than 80 awards and titles that distinguish it as one of the best Brazilian capitals to live, work, do business, study and have fun. It was also highlighted in 2010 by the UN as the number 1 Metropolis in terms of quality of life in Brazil three times; as having one of the 40 best democratic public management models due to its Participatory Budget and for having the best Human Development Index (HDI) among the national metropolises. IBGE data pointed it in 2009 as the Brazilian capital with the lowest unemployment rate, the British consulting firm Jones Lang LaSalle included it in 2004 among the 24 cities with the greatest potential to attract investment in the world[26] and appears in the list of Pricewaterhouse Coopers among the hundred richest cities in the world. Porto Alegre received the classification of self-sufficient city by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group & Network (GaWC).
Furthermore, Porto Alegre is one of the most wooded and literate cities in the country, it is a regional hub for attracting migrants in search of better living, working and studying conditions and has an infrastructure in many aspects superior to that of other capitals in Brazil. It made international headlines when it hosted the first editions of the World Social Forum and was chosen as one of the venues for the 2014 World Cup. It also has a qualified and diversified culture, with intense activity in practically all areas of the arts, sports and sciences, often with national projection, in addition to having rich folklore traditions and a significant historical heritage in centuries-old buildings and numerous museums.

Porto Alegre, Rio Grande Do Sul (Brazilians Here Say This Is Brazil's Europe)
PORT ALEGRE is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Its population of 1,488,252 inhabitants (2020) makes it the twelfth most populous city in the country and the center of Brazil's fifth largest metropolitan area, with 4,405,760 inhabitants (2010). The city is the southernmost capital city of a Brazilian state.
Porto Alegre was founded in 1769 by Manuel Jorge Gomes de Sepúlveda, who used the pseudonym José Marcelino de Figueiredo to hide his identity; but the official date is 1772 with the act signed by immigrants from the Azores, Portugal.
The city lies on the eastern bank of the Guaíba Lake, where five rivers converge to form the Lagoa dos Patos, a giant freshwater lagoon navigable by even the largest of ships. This five-river junction has become an important alluvial port as well as a chief industrial and commercial center of Brazil.
In recent years, Porto Alegre hosted the World Social Forum, an initiative of several non-government organizations. The city became famous for being the first city that implemented participatory budgeting.The 9th Assembly of the World Council of Churches was held in Porto Alegre in 2006. Since 2000, Porto Alegre also hosts one of the world's largest free software events, called FISL.
The city was one of the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, having previously been a venue for the 1950 FIFA World Cup.
In the middle of 2010s, Porto Alegre had a growing wave of violence, being ranked as 39th among the world's 50 most violent cities in 2017. Nevertheless, the number of violent crimes has been dropping steadily since 2018.
The official date of the foundation of the city of Porto Alegre is 26 March 1772 by Manuel Sepúlveda, when Freguesia de São Francisco do Porto dos Casais was created and changed a year later to Nossa Senhora da Madre de Deus de Porto Alegre. However, the village started in 1752, when 60 Azorean couples were brought over by the Treaty of Madrid in order to set up Missions at the Northeast Region of Rio Grande do Sul that was handed over to the Portuguese Crown in exchange for the Sacramento Colony located on the margin of the Plata River. Land demarcation took a long time and the Azoreans settled permanently at Porto de Viamão, which was the first name by which Porto Alegre went by.

The Orla do Guaíba in Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul, a state in the southern region of Brazil, although it had been a park in the state capital for a long time, it was little frequented due to its state of conservation and poor infrastructure. However, in recent years the place has undergone a major transformation and revitalization, which has attracted a large part of the population of Rio Grande do Sul to attend the place as a leisure area. It is common to see the Orla do Guaíba, especially at the height of the Centro Cultural Usina do Gasômetro, which is very busy. In a few days it's even crowded, you might say.
The Park is divided into 4 sections:

There is a popular space to watch the beautiful sunset.
In this area there are also outdoor gyms, street artists playing music and street vendors.
2) Section 2 that starts at Rotula das Cuias and progresses to the multi-sport courts. This section is more dedicated to sports, with a children's square, courts, sand soccer field.
3) Section 3 will house a large skate park, however it has not yet been built.
4) Section 4 is still unknown, as it has not yet been built and will go from Poa Sunset to Parque Marinha do Brasil.

O passeio no Barco Cisne Branco é um dos programas mais legais que fizemos em Porto Alegre. Esse ícone da cidade navega há anos no Guaíba e há pouco tempo foi totalmente restaurado. Hoje a estrutura surpreende, como já vi em poucas embarcações turísticas no Brasil.
Os passeios diários partem em dois horários do cais em frente ao Mercado Público da capital gaúcha e duram cerca de uma hora. Nos finais de semana há ainda outros horários, incluindo happy hour com música ao vivo. Ao longo do ano, também acontecem eventos especiais, como sushi a bordo e até balada.
Abaixo contamos todos os detalhes da nossa experiência nesse passeio de barco em Porto Alegre.
BARCO CISNE BRANCO EM PORTO ALEGRE
Como disse no começo, o Barco Cisne Branco tem uma estrutura muito boa. São três andares, sendo o primeiro onde fica a pista de dança para os eventos com balada, o segundo onde fica o restaurante/bar e, por fim, o terceiro é aberto e de onde se tem a melhor vista do tour.
O passeio convencional, que é diário, parte sempre às 15h do Cais Mauá. Para os horários das 10h30 e 16h30 é preciso confirmar antes, já que eles só acontecem com no mínimo 20 passageiros. Em todos eles o bar está aberto e vende bebidas e petiscos, além de refeições dependendo do tipo de tour. A capacidade é para 200 passageiros e 20 tripulantes.
Partimos do Cais de Porto Alegre e navegamos por cerca de uma hora pelo Guaíba, que apesar de chamarem de rio na realidade é um lago. Essas e outras explicações são feitas pelo sistema de som em português e inglês.
Pra quem busca uma vista panorâmica, os melhores lugares para ficar são no último andar e também na proa. A navegação é bem tranquila e as águas estavam super calmas no dia do nosso passeio, não balançou nem um pouco.
Quando o Barco Cisne Branco vai se afastando é que se tem uma das vistas mais bonitas do skyline de Porto Alegre e também da Usina do Gasômetro, um dos cartões postais da cidade. Entre uma informação e outra, músicas que têm como tema a capital gaúcha são tocadas.
Nós fizemos o tour convencional, mas no happy hour dos finais de semana, que acontece às 16h30, normalmente há música ao vivo. A programação mensal pode ser conferida no site.
Essa é a única embarcação de turismo do Rio Grande do Sul que conta com acessibilidade a pessoas com necessidades especiais. Mas como pode haver alguma dificuldade no acesso pelo cais, é sempre bom consultar a empresa antes para que eles possam dar as orientações de chegada.
Navegar pelo Guaíba a bordo do Barco Cisne Branco foi uma experiência bem legal, ainda mais que o dia estava lindo e era nossa primeira vez na cidade. Valeu a pena!
O barco sai do Cais Mauá em Porto Alegre, bem pertinho do Mercado Público (acesso via passarela subterrânea) e da estação de trem Mercado. Há convênio com desconto com a Garagem Mauá (Av. Mauá, 1263). O endereço do cais é Av. Mauá, 1050, no Centro.
Os ingressos para os passeios diários custam R$ 35* por pessoa. O happy hour de sábado e domingo sai por R$ 45*. Para os eventos especiais, consulte sempre o site.
