Avellino is a town and comune, capital of the province of Avellino in the Campania region of southern Italy. It is situated in a plain surrounded by mountains 47 kilometers east of Naples and is an important hub on the road from Salerno to Benevento.
Avellino Cathedral, with its Romanesque crypt, stands on the site of a rich Roman villa which was built around 129 BC and abandoned after the eruption of Vesuvius, and an earthquake in 346 AD. The church and convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie were built-in 1580.

Rome, the capital of Italy, was for centuries the political centre of Western civilisation as the capital of the Roman Empire. L'Autostrada A16 (anche detta Autostrada dei due mari), è un'autostrada italiana che, attraversando l'appennino campano, collega il Mar Tirreno all'Adriatico; si estende per 172 km tra Campania e Puglia e interconnette l'autostrada A1 a Casoria con l'A14 a Canosa di Puglia. È gestita da Autostrade per l'Italia.
Originariamente numerata A17 (unitamente al tratto Canosa-Bari, ora A14), è stata rinumerata in A16 in seguito al completamento dell'autostrada adriatica. È stato suggerito che il cambiamento di numero sia stato dettato da motivi scaramantici. Quando l'autostrada era numerata A17 la A16 era la Roma-Civitavecchia, adesso A12.
La costruzione del collegamento autostradale tra Napoli e Bari fu controversa. Il primo ostacolo per un collegamento tra i mari Tirreno e Adriatico fu quello naturale formato dagli Appennini. Nei progetti preliminari si parlava di un percorso simile al collegamento storico tra Napoli e Bari, cioè seguendo grossomodo la Strada statale 87 Sannitica verso Cancello, per poi risalire la Valle Caudina e toccare Benevento. Da Benevento c'erano poi due soluzioni: passare per Foggia, o tagliare più a sud gli Appennini. Fu scelta la seconda, anche se con maggiore difficoltà nella progettazione in una zona altamente montuosa.
Il primo tratto dellʾautostrada, dallʾallacciamento con lʾAutostrada del Sole presso Napoli e Baiano, venne aperto al traffico il 2 gennaio 1966; esso misurava 26,889 km e comprendeva le stazioni intermedie di Pomigliano e Nola.[4] Il 22 dicembre successivo venne aperto il tratto seguente, da Baiano ad Avellino Sud.
Ancora dopo con la costruzione della A30 tutta l'area napoletana subì qualche modifica. Oltre allo spostamento del casello di Nola dall'A16 all'A30 (dove si trova attualmente) vennero costruite le intersezioni dell'allacciamento A16-A30 e venne costruita la nuova Barriera di Napoli Est nel territorio di San Vitaliano, che insieme a quella di Napoli Nord sull'A1 nel territorio di Marcianise, soppiantarono la vecchia barriera terminale di Napoli Stazione, dove oggi troviamo un posto di Polizia stradale e un Punto Blu.
L'autostrada è formata da 2 corsie per carreggiata per quasi tutto il tracciato. Nel suo taglio da ovest a est della nostra penisola, attraversa la Campania con il territorio dell'Irpinia, interseca l'Autostrada A30 nei pressi di Nola, supera Avellino, da dove si può raggiungere Salerno (collegamento comodo per chi viaggia tra il salernitano e la Puglia), e Benevento (collegata tramite un raccordo). Oltrepassato l'appennino campano e il subappennino dauno, termina in territorio pugliese nei pressi di Canosa da cui sono poi facilmente raggiungibili Bari e Foggia.
A causa della conformazione del territorio, la parte orientale dell'autostrada nel suo tratto terminale è spesso soggetta a forti venti che ostacolano la circolazione, in particolare quella dei mezzi pesanti. Nei tratti in salita con maggior pendenza, è stata rimossa la corsia d'emergenza per creare una terza corsia facilitando la circolazione dei mezzi pesanti. Nei mesi invernali (tra novembre e aprile) è obbligatorio avere le catene a bordo tra Baiano e Candela. In questo tratto appenninico talvolta la neve cade improvvisa e copiosa, bloccando gli automobilisti in corrispondenza dei valichi. In condizioni critiche viene imposta l'uscita obbligatoria a Baiano, per il traffico proveniente da Napoli. Questa condizione non è poi così rara, infatti i segnali di uscita obbligatoria sono installati in maniera fissa, anche se normalmente coperti o girati, nei pressi del casello di Baiano.
Il 7 marzo 2005 l'Autostrada ha subito seri danni strutturali a seguito di intense precipitazioni. In particolare il tratto che va da Grottaminarda a Lacedonia rimase chiuso al traffico a causa di una frana e di uno spostamento di un pilone di sostegno di un viadotto al km 122,5. Il tratto interessato, in località Alveo Vecchio, tra i comuni di Sant'Agata di Puglia e Rocchetta Sant'Antonio, rimase chiuso fino al 16 marzo. In quei giorni il traffico veniva deviato dal casello di Grottaminarda sulla S.S. 90, via Ariano Irpino, Bovino, ex S.S. 161 e S.S. 650 fino a Candela. Il tratto è stato totalmente ricostruito ex novo con una variante a doppia curva, a causa della difficoltà nel ripristinare il viadotto interessato.
