Great Dunmow is a historic market town in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It is situated on the north of the A120 road, approximately midway between Bishop's Stortford and Braintree, 6 miles east of London Stansted Airport. Originally the site of a Roman settlement on Stane Street, the town thrived during the Middle Ages. Many buildings survive from this period, including a sixteenth-century town hall. Dunmow means Meadow on the Hill. The settlement was variously referred to as Dunmow Magna, Much Dunmow, or most commonly Great Dunmow.
Great Dunmow borders the former estate of Easton Lodge, a country house belonging to the Maynard family. The most notable member, Frances Maynard, became the Countess of Warwick and later a mistress of King Edward VII. As the Prince of Wales he was reportedly a regular visitor to the Estate, travelling from London on the train to Easton Lodge railway station. The initials CW are visible on a number of Victorian era properties in Great Dunmow. Known as Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick she was a generous philanthropist in the local community. As of 2017, Robert Nicholson is Emeritus Mayor of Great Dunmow.
The town's history is explained in the Maltings Museum on Mill Lane. A Roman small town developed on the junction between Stane Street and the Roman roads which ran north-east to south-west from Sudbury to London and north-west to southeast from Cambridge to Chelmsford. The main settlement area spread westwards from the road junction, with cemeteries on the outskirts. There was a second Roman settlement at Church End immediately to the north of present-day Great Dunmow. The site likely included a rural Roman Temple.
Great Dunmow is 8.3 miles (13.4 km) from Braintree railway station (63 minutes to London Liverpool Street) to the east and 9.2 miles (14.8 km) from Bishop's Stortford railway station (45 minutes to London Liverpool Street and 35 minutes to Tottenham Hale) to the west. Until 1952 the town was served by the Bishop's Stortford-Braintree Branch Line a line between these stations, which opened to passengers on 22 February 1869 and closed on 3 March 1952. The line continued in use for freight trains and occasional excursions, closing in stages with the final section to Easton Lodge closing on 17 February 1972. It is now possible to walk or cycle in either direction along the former track bed to Braintree Station, or to the edge of Bishop's Stortford.

Braintree is a town in Essex, England. The principal settlement of Braintree District, it is located 10 miles northeast of Chelmsford and 15 miles west of Colchester.
Braintree has grown contiguous with several surrounding settlements. Braintree proper lies on the River Brain and to the south of Stane Street, the Roman road from Braughing to Colchester, while Bocking lies on the River Blackwater and to the north of the road. The two are sometimes referred to together as Braintree and Bocking, and since 1934 they form the civil parish of that name.
Braintree is bypassed by the modern-day A120 and A131 roads, while trains serve two stations in the town, at the end of the Braintree Branch Line. Braintree is twinned with Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, France, and gives its name to the towns of Braintree, Massachusetts and Braintree, Vermont, in the United States.
Braintree lies in north Essex, about 46 miles (74 km) from London, with factories and housing to the south and rural areas to the north, where arable crops are grown. It lies about 150 feet (46 m) above sea level. Essex is rather flat on the whole, and the Braintree area is no exception; however, there is a general downward trend in the height of the ground from the northwest towards the coast to the southeast. Two rivers flow through Braintree in this direction. Pod's Brook approaches the western side of the town, forming a natural boundary between Braintree and the neighbouring village of Rayne about two miles (3 km) to the west.
Braintree's museum, containing displays relating to the history of the town. The Braintree Arts Theatre opened in 2009 on the Notley High School campus. The Braintree and Bocking Carnival takes place each June.
Braintree has two main market areas that link throughout the town, which are run twice weekly, on a Wednesday and a Saturday. They are based outside the Town Hall in Market Square, and also run along Bank Street and the High Street. The High street is mainly a pedestrianised area, which allows only buses to commute through the town.
Freeport is a shopping area on the outskirts of Braintree, described as a designer outlet village. It has approximately 90 departments where designer brands sell surplus stock for lower than the recommended retail price. Freeport also has its own railway station, namely Braintree Freeport railway station, which is the first stop on the journey from Braintree to London Liverpool Street via Witham.
Braintree has two railway stations, Braintree and Braintree Freeport next to the Freeport shopping area. Bocking Windmill, technically a part of Bocking, the windmill stands proud over the countryside at the North end of Braintree & Bocking. Saffron Walden is a picturesque, medieval town, in north-west Essex, 15 miles south of Cambridge.
If you're thinking of visiting or moving to Saffron walden you'll find many interesting historic buildings reflecting its wealth as a rural market town.
At the heart lies St Mary’s Church, the largest parish church in Essex. Fine examples of elaborate moulded plasterwork (pargetting), can be seen on the Old Sun Inn and the houses in Castle Street & Bridge Street. Also of note are the Eight Bells, the timber-framed Cross Keys, and the medieval building located at 1 Myddylton Place.
Saffron Walden Museum's collections are housed in one of the oldest purpose-built museum buildings in the country, completed in 1835. It includes mammoth tusks and mummies, an early Tudor bed and a natural history museum gallery. In the grounds of the museum are the ruins of the Castle Keep which dates back to the 1130s.
Bridge End Garden is on the north side of Saffron Walden. Careful restoration has replicated gardening techniques and designs typical of the Victorian era and brought the garden back to its full splendour. The wonderful hedge maze is of particular appeal to children. The path into the garden passes the Fry Art Gallery which houses a collection of works by a Great Bardfield group of artists who settled in the Essex countryside in the 1930s.
The attractive Common is the oldest of Saffron Walden’s open spaces and on its eastern side is the largest turf labyrinth still surviving in Europe. Children of all ages enjoy following the ‘path’ through the turf, which winds for about one mile within a circle 100 feet (30.5 meters) in diameter.

Stansted Mountfitchet is an English village and civil parish in Uttlesford district, Essex, near the Hertfordshire border, 35 miles north of London. The village is served by Stansted Mountfitchet railway station. Stansted Mountfitchet is situated in north west Essex near the Hertfordshire border and 3 miles (5 km) north of Bishop's Stortford. Stansted Airport is 2 miles (3 km) from the village. The village has three primary schools (Bentfield Primary School, St Mary's (C of E) Primary School and Magna Carta Primary Academy), and one high school which was renamed the Forest Hall School in September, 2013.
Stansted was a Saxon settlement (the name means 'stony place' in Anglo-Saxon) and predates the Norman conquest, although it was not until this invasion that it acquired the suffix Mountfitchet from the Norman baron who settled there. A small remnant of his castle remains, around which a reconstruction of an early Norman castle has been built. Believed to have been fortified originally in the Iron Age, and subsequently by the Romans and Vikings, construction of the Norman castle began in 1066.
St Mary the Virgin's Church, built in the 1120s, is a redundant church under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The brick west tower was added in 1692. A chapel of ease dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist was built in 1889 nearer the centre of the village and is now the village church. Stansted Hall was built in 1871.
Other village attractions include the House on the Hill Toy Museum, which its owners claim is the largest toy museum in the World. Located next to Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village of 1066, both attractions are owned by Alan Goldsmith. The museum opened in 1991 and holds over 80,000 toys, mostly from the 1950s to the 1990s. A working windmill built in 1787 is in the village, and is open to the public once a month.
During the Second World War, the US Air Force constructed an airfield near the village. After the war ended, it was subsequently taken over by the government and developed as a commercial airport. Today, MAG Stansted Airport is accessible by road from Junction 8 of the M11 motorway, near Bishop's Stortford and direct by train from London Liverpool Street.
In March 2013, Stansted Mountfitchet was named as the UK's fourth most internet-friendly town. The Google eTown Awards recognise the top places where businesses are most actively embracing the web, and Stansted's high ranking reflects the increased use of the internet to spur economic growth. The results put Stansted in fourth place behind Richmond, in third, Edinburgh, in second, and Stratford upon Avon, which took the top spot.

FOREST OF BOWLAND Road Trip | The Villages of Little England
Taking a road trip through the Forest of Bowland AONB in Northern England & stopping by the villages of Little England, namely Whitewell, Slaidburn, & Dunsop Bridge. Welcome to my Forest of Bowland day trip!

After heavy rainfall overnight I woke up early and got on the road with high expectations. The Forest of Bowland is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Northern England and whilst not as popular as places such as the Lake District it’s still a fantastic pick for a day out. With lots of rolling hills, peat moorland and gaping valleys there’s something for everyone regardless of whether you’re going to tackle it in a car or by walking.
After passing Jeffrey Hill and getting a bit wet filming the introduction I realised that the bad weather overnight wasn’t going to let up much during the day. Showers were forecast and the skies fluttered between grey and black. Still, I was determined to make the most of it and to see as many places as I possibly could.
My first challenge was to get parked in the village of Whitewell and find some stepping stones over the River Hodder that I had read about on someone’s blog. After heading off in the wrong direction a few times I finally found a couple of signposts that sent me down a muddy trail towards the river’s edge. It's there I found the stepping stones - what an amazing place, I really wasn’t sure if it was the rain that kept everyone else away or if they were a true hidden gem in the Forest.
After getting soaked by a passing storm (I didn’t fall in although I may as well have done) I headed to my next village - Dunsop Bridge, a place recognised for being the closest village to the geographical centre of the British Isles. It also had a lovely bridge, post office and church.
Next up I visited the small village of Newton-in-bowland in the Ribble Valley District and followed it up with a walk around the very picturesque Slaidburn with its stone houses, narrow streets and local pub the Hark To Bounty.
The villages weren’t the only highlight of my Forest of Bowland road trip, it was incredible to just drive around the tiny roads and admire the wonderful scenery as I went. I ran into lots of postcard worthy bridges, shallow rivers, farm houses, sheep, old abandoned buildings and rolling countryside - just what I needed after my city adventures a few days prior.
As the rain continued to fall I made it to Sawley where I got to see the ruins of the 10th century Sawley Abbey. The weather may have been out of my control and determined to make the day difficult but I enjoyed seeing the Forest of Bowland and many of its tiny villages just the same.

Time to go strolling around St Albans, England, June 2023. Saint Albans is an ancient city just North of London, just beside what was known as Verulamium to the Romans, and Verlamion or Verlamio to the Catuvellauni Celtic people who lived there before them. We take a look at the modern town centre, the Cathedral (which was begun in 1077 AD), Verulamium Park with its old Roman wall, and we end by walking past the museum and enter the Gorhambury Estate, though the old Roman Theatre there is closed today.

Great British Market Towns - Thaxted
Thaxted is a small country town with a recorded history which dates back to before the Domesday Book. Thaxted has no artificial tourist attractions; it remains today what is has been for the last ten centuries - a thriving town which moves with the times, but also treats its heritage from the past with great respect. By the late 14th century, Thaxted was at the centre of the local cutlery trade. It is thought that the Guild of Cutlers contributed to the cost of building the Thaxted Guildhall, which the listed building details prepared in 1967 suggests, was completed between 1390 and 1410.

Our Year living in Great Easton, Essex 2019 - 2020 - Christmas in Essex. It’s surprising just how much goes on in a little village. We Rented in Great Easton for a year while our new house was being built in Suffolk, not being used to country life we found ourselves surrounded by sheep and saw foxes playing close by, chickens and woodpeckers and owls. The village lit up at Christmas with a massive tree being donated by a local builder. Christmas saw magical lights and father Christmas on his sleigh. The village is near, The Endway, Great Easton, Great Dunmow, Essex. GE. Soapbox race. Rolls-Royce. The Swan events Pub. Thaxted is a town and civil parish in the Uttlesford district of north-west Essex.

I got to meet up with my mate Richard for the first time in nearly a year for this Essex circular walk, 11.25 miles in total. Widdington, Newport, Wicken Bonhunt, Rickling and Quendon. We saw 4 churches on the route and passed lots of pretty little thatched cottages, village signs and old buildings, crossed a motorway twice and a railway line and even visited the scene of a gruesome murder! I reviewed another Lilley's cider, the Firedancer. The weather wasn't great, we had rain on and off all day until we returned to the cars and then the sun came out!

Warminster Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Wiltshire, and around 15 miles southeast of Bath, is the town of Warminster.
Geographically, Warminster is situated at the western edge of Salisbury Plain, lying just to the north of the River Wylye.
In 1204 a market charter was granted to Warminster by King John. A corn market developed here, and by the mid 17th century, it had become what some called the ‘greatest corn-market by much in the West’. Other industries included malting, cloth production and iron founding.
In 1783 the obelisk seen at the start of the walk was placed to commemorate the enclosure of the parish. Wikipedia is out on the date of this by a whopping 90 years! Remember folks - always check official sources.
Warminster's cloth production went into decline during the Industrial Revolution as there was no suitable river to power a water wheel, and none of the canals reached the town. Similarly, the arrival of the railway brought about a slow decline in the corn market.
It was in 1851 that the railway arrived in Warminster, courtesy of Great Western Railway. The station is situated on the Wessex Main Line between Bristol and Southampton.
Owing to its position at the western edge of Salisbury Plain military training area, Warminster is home to a garrison to the northeast of the town centre.

The Forgotten Gardens of Easton Lodge
The Gardens of Easton Lodge is an idyllic (Historic England, Grade II) registered haven which has been partially restored to its former glory by a team of dedicated volunteers. These historic gardens date back over 400 years. Their most renowned owner was the Countess of Warwick, mistress of the Prince of Wales before he acceded to the throne as Edward VII. The Countess commissioned Harold Peto to create stunning formal gardens and a treehouse, in 1902. Abandoned in 1950 after the demolition of the house, the gardens were then forgotten. Today the 23 acres of gardens have a magical atmosphere, as the splendour of a century ago is gently revealed through restoration. The Gardens are open to the public on Thursdays (Mar to end Nov) and (ONLY) 9 open-day Sundays a year.
