We visit the LIncolnshire town of Grantham where a new statue of Margaret Thatcher has caused a controversy. We take a look at the new statue and the birthplace of Maggie Thatcher as well as a full tour of the town centre here.

Hurled eggs and loud booing welcomed in the £300,000 memorial to Baroness Margaret Thatcher, which has been erected in her hometown of Grantham. Others took selfies in front of it.
Eggs have been thrown after a statue of Baroness Margaret Thatcher was lowered into place in the former prime minister's hometown of Grantham.
Within hours of the monument being erected on Sunday, loud booing could be heard from some motorists as they drove past, with one man shouting: Tear it down!

Grantham is a market and industrial town in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England, straddling the London–Edinburgh East Coast Main Line and the River Witham and bounded to the west by the A1 north–south trunk road. It lies some 23 miles south of the county town, Lincoln, and 22 miles east of Nottingham.
This town began as a Saxon village and grew into a market town during the 11th century. It was recognised in the Domesday Book in 1086 with a recorded population of 183 households and in the Middle Ages, the town was successful in the wool and leather trade.
St Wulfram's Church towers over the historic town and was described by Simon Jenkins as ‘the finest steeple in England’. The Angel and Royal hotel located on the High Street dates back to the 13th century and is one of the oldest coaching inns in the country. The charming property has hosted no less than seven Kings and Queens over the centuries.
Grantham is an attractive town on the border with Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Within easy access of the A1 the town has some excellent close by attractions including the National Trust Property Belton House and the De Vere Belton Woods hotel and golf course.
The area has been home to some famous residents including Isaac Newton, Edith Smith (who was the UK’s first female police officer in 1914), and Margaret Thatcher, the former UK Prime Minister.
It is home to Belvoir Catle, an imposing castle that offers outstanding views. Belvoir Castle is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Rutland. The family have lived at Belvoir in an unbroken line for almost a thousand years. Today, you can enjoy a walk in the gardens and around the house, and they often host family days out and seasonal events.
You can also stop by the Engine Yard at Belvoir Castle, the first retail village of its kind in the local area. Here you can enjoy browsing the best of British gifts, garments and accessories from established and upcoming designers.You can also look forward to regular events, demonstrations and talks, from Countryside Corner debates to farmers’ markets every month.
Of Saxon origin, Grantham is mentioned in Domesday Book (1086), and its royal charter of incorporation was granted in 1463. In the Middle Ages Grantham grew prosperous from the wool trade. Located there is St. Wulfram’s Church, one of England’s finest medieval churches. The fine 18th-century George Hotel was made famous by Charles Dickens in Nicholas Nickleby (1839).
Grantham is the birthplace of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, and Sir Isaac Newton attended the King’s School there.

This should be clearly noted as we begin. Yet, not every part of Great Britain has the affluence of London, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. Some places in the UK are poor. We’re here to show you the 10 poorest places in the UK.
These places are the same neighborhood with the biggest shortages of basic social infrastructure and facilities such as playgrounds, parks, pubs, shops, and sports centers. You’ll find some of them among the areas left behind in England, Wales, and Scotland. Authorities have to do something about these 10 poorest places in the UK.
10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
As proof of how gripping the poverty state of this town is, its population reduced by almost 3,000 within 10 years. In a report that shows how poor some parts of the nations are, Greenock tops the list. In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.
8. Halton, England
England too has some of the poorest places in the UK and the first of these on this list is the eighth poorest place in the UK, Halton. The district and unitary authority that registers its name on this list has a borough status in Cheshire.
When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.

What are the most miserable towns in the United Kingdom? Many of the towns in the United Kingdom are not doing too badly in terms of basic amenities. The quality of life in those towns is higher even than in places recognized as cities in other countries. Still, it can’t be said that all those towns are having it equally. Assessing the standard of living and quality of life in the UK as a whole, we can describe certain towns in the United Kingdom as miserable. Granted, those towns are not inherently terrible. Yet, the situation there is not acceptable in the light of what we see in other villages, towns, and cities, in the UK. In this video, we shall be discussing the 10 most miserable towns in the UK.
10. Cumbernauld, Scotland
We will start our discussion with a town in Scotland. To give you a hint; this is the first of the three Scottish towns on this list of the 10 most miserable towns in the UK. We are talking about Cumbernauld, a large town in North Lanarkshire with an area of 8.3 square miles or 21.5 square kilometers. Under normal circumstances, it should be a city because of its city-like huge population of 51,000.
It has not shed that horrible description as “Scotland’s most dismal town.” Truly speaking, this town is lacking in anything of the good things you would find in Glasgow or Edinburgh. The center of Cumbernauld has been described as the “Kabul of the North.” This says it all. Whatever you know about Kabul has its miniature in this miserable town.
9. Grimsby, England
The first of the 5 cities in England on this list is Grimsby. Maybe we should stop calling it Great Grimsby. If it were great indeed, this port town and the North East Lincolnshire administrative center on the south bank of the Humber Estuary would have all amenities that would make it rank among the best. But the comments from its residents and one-time visitors indicated that life is miserable in this place that has been voted several times as one of the worst places to live in England.
Therefore, the town of around 100,000 residents is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. Its entire area of 88 square miles (or 230 square kilometers) has been ranked the 18th worst place to live a while ago.
8. Airdrie, Scotland
Back in Scotland; we are now examining Airdrie, a town in North Lanarkshire. It also is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. The town on a plateau with an elevation of 400 feet or 130 meters above sea level is about 12 miles (or 19 kilometers) east of Glasgow city center. During its industrial heyday in the 19th century, coal mining and cotton milling were the major industries, no one could then think of this former industrial town as miserable.
However, the exit of those industries has made life there miserable to extent of being branded the most dismal town in the UK. The PR manager for the town admits it deserves its grim reputation as the worst in Scotland. The town is boring and the buildings are ugly.

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

What are the most dangerous cities to live in the United Kingdom? Ranking the United Kingdom as the 116th most dangerous country is not bad at all. That means the country is safer than, at least, 115 others in the world. Between 2020 and 2021 alone, it experienced 600 homicides as just one of the crimes reported that year. A total of 6.1 crimes were reported during that year. Out of these, 2 million were crimes against another person. If there were 67 million people in the UK during that year, the crime rate would be a whole 2,985 crimes per 100,000 people. However, it’s not everywhere in the UK that is dangerous. In this video, we will discuss those currently rated as the 5 most dangerous cities in the United Kingdom.
5. Nottingham
This city with links to the Robin Hood legend and which is famous for lacemaking and the tobacco industry is incidentally here. If we go by its population of 337,100, Nottingham that’s playing host to the headquarters of a number of major international businesses including Boots, E. On Energy, Pedigree Petfoods, and Gala Bingo, is the 14th largest city in the UK.
It’s the most dangerous major city in Nottinghamshire. Out of the 236 cities, towns, and villages in Nottinghamshire, it’s among the 20 most dangerous overall. In 2021, the overall crime rate in Nottingham was 114 crimes per 1,000 people. That was 49 percent higher than the crime rate in Nottinghamshire with a rate of 76 per 1,000 residents. Violence and sexual offenses are the most common crimes in Nottingham with 14,210 offenses during 2021, producing a crime rate of 45 per 1,000.
In 2020, a total of 34,228 crimes were committed with a crime rate of 108 per 1,000. In 2019, 42,113 were committed with a rate of 133. The year 2018 witnessed 41,970 crimes with a rate of 133. In 2017, the crime rate was 119 with 37,753 crimes. And in 2106, the total crime was 30,097 with a rate of 95 crimes per 1,000 people.
In December 2021, Nottingham was the most dangerous city for bicycle theft, with 52 crimes reported. That month was also a bad month for the city’s residents as it was the most dangerous area in Nottinghamshire for burglary while 110 of these crimes were committed. The city recorded 321 criminal damages and arsons still during December 2021.
4. Birmingham
We just have to agree with the inclusion of Birmingham on this list. This is a city with a population of about 1.1 million with an urban area having just over 2.6 million residents and a metropolitan area with a population of 3.5 million. Birmingham, despite having a coveted reputation as the first manufacturing city in the world some 200 to 150 years ago, is currently one of the most dangerous cities in the UK.
As the most dangerous major city in the West Midlands, Birmingham is among the 10 most dangerous overall out of the 44 cities, towns, and villages in the West Midlands. In 2021, the overall crime rate in this city was 137 crimes per 1,000 people. That was 17 percent higher than the West Midlands’ overall crime rate of 118 per 1,000 residents. Violence and sexual offenses are the most common crimes in Birmingham during 2021 when some 78,062 of these crimes were committed. That was a rate of 67 per 1,000 and was 38 percent higher than the 2020's figure.
Consider also the historical crime rate for Birmingham, not just what it had in 2021, and form your opinion. In 2020, a total of 123,271 crimes were committed with a crime rate of 106 per 1,000. In 2019, 120,832 were committed with a rate of 104 per 1,000 residents. The city in 2018 witnessed 114,605 crimes with a rate of 99. In 2017, the crime rate was 89 while 103,319 crimes took place. And in 2106, the total crime was 90,930 while at the rate of 78 crimes per 1,000 people.

Harlaxton Manor is a country house located in Harlaxton, Lincolnshire, England. Its architecture, which combines elements of Jacobean and Elizabethan styles with symmetrical Baroque massing, renders the mansion unique among surviving Jacobethan manors. The property currently serves as the British campus for the University of Evansville and partners with Eastern Illinois University and Western Kentucky University.
Harlaxton Manor is listed Grade I on the National Heritage List for England, as is its forecourt gateway and screen. The surrounding park and gardens are listed Grade II* on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
Harlaxton is first recorded in the Domesday Book as Harleston. The current mansion is the second Harlaxton Manor. The first was built on a different site during the 14th century and was used as a hunting lodge by John of Gaunt. By 1619, Sir Daniel de Ligne purchased the manor.[4] The original house was deserted after 1780; it was inherited by Gregory Gregory, and was torn down in 1857.
The current house was built by Gregory between 1832 and 1854,[1] and it helped usher in a renaissance of Elizabethan architecture. The original architect, Anthony Salvin, was replaced by William Burn, who is responsible for its interior detailing. Upon Gregory's death, the manor passed to his cousin George Gregory and then in 1860 to a distant relative, John Sherwin-Gregory. Upon the death of Sherwin's wife in 1892, it passed to his godson Thomas Pearson-Gregory, who allowed it to fall into disrepair.
The manor passed through several sets of disparate hands in the twentieth century. Abandoned by 1935, it was purchased two years later by Violet Van der Elst, a businesswoman and inventor, who made her money from developing the first brushless shaving cream and made her name by campaigning against capital punishment. She restored the house and had it wired for electricity. During the Second World War, it was requisitioned by the Royal Air Force as the officers' mess for RAF Harlaxton and later to house a company of the 1st Airborne Division.
In 1948, Harlaxton was purchased by The Society of Jesus, who used it as a novitiate. Stanford University leased Harlaxton Manor from the Jesuits in 1965, and with only 80 students in its first year, it was the first American university in Great Britain. Students attended classes from Monday to Thursday, often travelling on the weekends, similar to the Harlaxton schedule today. Until 1969, Stanford used the Manor as part of its British study abroad programme, instructing students in British traditions, history, and culture. But the location was a problem. “We were too remote, too far from London, and it was just too expensive to get to London, so the programme relocated to Cliveden, Berkshire, between Oxford and London.[5][6]
The University of Evansville began using the property in 1971 as its British campus, but it was owned by William Ridgway, a trustee of the university, until 1986. Immediately after the purchase, the University of Evansville began renovating the entire facility.
Harlaxton is currently owned by the University of Evansville, operating as Harlaxton College, and hosts their study-abroad programme. Since 1984, Harlaxton Manor has also been the site of the annual Harlaxton Medieval Symposium, an interdisciplinary symposium on medieval art, literature and architecture.[7] It also serves as a study abroad university for English majors from Eastern Illinois University, Honors College students from Western Kentucky University, students at the Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky, students from Baker University in Kansas, and honours programme students from Hannibal-LaGrange University.[8]

Leicester, the home of a popular EPL team is our starting point. It’s a unitary authority in the East Midlands of England. Lying on the River Soar, it’s situated northeast of Birmingham and west of Peterborough. The average monthly salary in this city with the second-largest economy in the East Midlands is £1,800.00. However, if you deduct the total cost of living of £789.23, you’ll be left with £1,010.77, which is not too bad. To rent a bedroom home in the inner city, you need an average of £583.33. The average utility is £151.90 while in this compact city, an average of £54.00 is enough for the transport pass. This gives you an idea of the cost of living here if you decide to live in a bigger house, drive your own car, and use more utility and other services not covered here.
9. Swansea, Wales
The next city is Swansea, the first Welsh city here. Located on the south coast of Wales, the coastal city is the second-largest city in the country, after Cardiff. It’s also the second-most expensive city in the region. The city of soccer, the university, and the castle is the principal area of the City and County of Swansea. Swansea’s average monthly salary of £1,499.00 is the lowest on this list. The average of £610.00 of this money will be spent on accommodation, £148.57 on utility which is fair, and £68.61 on transportation. All that added up to £827.18. And if taken away from the average salary, you will be left with a sum of £671.82 to care for other needs.
8. Sheffield, England
This city in South Yorkshire is the administrative center of its area. Located on the River Don with its 4 tributaries, the city is one of the most expensive cities in the United Kingdom. You are expected to spend as much as £852.48 in a month as the total cost of living. Breaking this down, a resident of this city will spend on average £633.33 on 1-bed accommodation in the inner city, £149.19 to pick up utility bills, and £65.00 on transport pass. When you take this away from £1,700.00, the average monthly income, you will be left with £847.52 to care for other things.
7. Liverpool, England
The famous city of Liverpool is expected to be found on lists like this. With all you have heard about this maritime city in northwest England, a metropolitan borough in Merseyside, the cost of living keeps pushing itself to skyrocket there. Though it has some of the UK’s highest paying industries, the average salary here is £1,641.61 because some people there are earning ridiculously low. Meanwhile, an average of £663.41 is being spent on accommodation while £151.03 is being spent on average on transportation £68.57. This brings the total cost of living to £883.01. Thus, a resident of Liverpool is left with some £758.60 every month.
