Het ringvormige gebied wordt soms onderscheiden in de noordrand, oostrand, zuidrand en westrand. De zes faciliteitengemeenten waar de verfransing van Vlaanderen speelt, kennen beperkte taalrechten voor Franstaligen. Alle 19 gemeenten maken deel uit van de provincie Vlaams-Brabant en behoren (met uitzondering van Tervuren dat tot het arrondissement Leuven behoort) tot het arrondissement Halle-Vilvoorde (en dus tot het voormalige kiesarrondissement B-H-V). Hoewel de randgemeenten geen bestuurlijk of administratief geheel vormen, genieten ze vanwege de Vlaamse overheden wel een bijzondere belangstelling en sommige gunsten, omdat ze door de nabijheid van het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest te maken hebben met een aantal specifieke uitdagingen op vlak van verkeer, ruimtelijke ordening, internationalisering, grondspeculatie, milieuvervuiling en taalpolitiek. De Vlaamse regering neemt specifieke maatregelen om de verfransing van haar grondgebied tegen te gaan.
De 19 gemeenten grenzen aan een Brusselse gemeente of aan een randgemeente met taalfaciliteiten: zes faciliteitengemeenten Drogenbos, Kraainem, Linkebeek, Sint-Genesius-Rode, Wemmel en Wezembeek-Oppem en de gemeenten Asse, Beersel, Dilbeek, Grimbergen, Hoeilaart, Machelen, Meise, Merchtem, Overijse, Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Tervuren, Vilvoorde en Zaventem. Volgens een ruimere definitie horen ook volgende gemeenten bij de brede Rand: Affligem, Gooik, Halle, Huldenberg, Kampenhout, Kortenberg, Lennik, Liedekerke, Pepingen, Steenokkerzeel en Ternat

The origins of the name of Antwerp comes from aan de werpe, which is Dutch for at the throw, referring to where the river throws its sand. The name also has a funny anecdote saying it comes from Hand werpen, which translated is throwing hands. In the official flag, the castle het Steen and the hand of Antwerp are shown.
In the 16th century, Antwerp was one of the most important financial centers of the world, where traders from all over Europe and Asia sold and bought their goods. After the siege of Antwerp in 1585 by the Spanish, this role as a financial center was taken over by Amsterdam. Nevertheless, since the 19th century and especially the 20th century, Antwerp has made a serious economic comeback.

Het Hof van Delft of Laarkasteel, heden de Sint-Lucaskliniek is een kasteel in neo-Vlaamserenaissance-stijl, gebouwd in 1903 naar ontwerp van Hendrik en Leonard Blomme en gelegen op een lichte verhevenheid in een beboomd domein. Het Laerhof was mogelijk oorspronkelijk van voor 1520. Vanaf 1535 staat het vermeld als Speelhuysken. Vanaf 1715 staat het vermeld als 'speelhof, pachterhuizinge, stal, schuur, met wel geconditioneerde brouwerij, boomgaard, houtwassen, rontsom in zijn water en hofgrachten voor visserijen, winnende landen', op afzonderlijk perceel tegen de straat gelegen.
Van het oorspronkelijk omgrachte kasteel uit de zeventiende eeuw rest nog een ruïne, in de uiterste zuidwesthoek van het domein. In 1903 werd een nieuw kasteel opgericht, volgens oude foto's mogelijk ter vervanging van een negentiende-eeuws kasteel. Het circa 50 hectare groot domein werd in 1945 aangekocht door de N.V. Domein het Laar, die het domein in villapercelen verkavelde. Het kasteel zelf werd in 1946 ingericht als ziekenhuis met nieuwe vleugels naar ontwerp van Maurice De Meester, die in 1948 in gebruik werden genomen. Deze kliniek werd later verder uitgebreid met onder meer een psychiatrische vleugel omstreeks 1968. In 2011 werden alle latere vleugels rond het kasteel gesloopt.

Creemore Springs' brewmasters Gord Fuller and Bryan Egan tour the Brouwerij De Troch brewhouse in Wambeek, Belgium. De Troch is famous for their Chapeau lambics and kriek available in a variety of fruits such as banana and raspberry. This is really an old brewery with old equipment making beer the way they have for years.
Altbier Tour: Timmerman's Old Mill
80-year-old Bertie, a Scot in Belgium, was our tour guide through Timmermans Brewery on our visit to this lambic brewery. This was particularly fascinating - a working grain mill from 1815 that they still use to brew to this day. Timmermans has been brewing lambic and gueuze since 1702!

HUNGRY TV - Geuze op 't kasteel
Het kasteel Neufcour in Eizeringen, dat dateert van de 18e eeuw, diende aanvankelijk als buitenverblijf en later als vaste woonplaats voor verschillende adellijke families. Eind 2010 diende het echter als décor voor een uitzonderlijk evenement. Geuzeliefhebbers van over de hele wereld kwamen naar Eizeringen om alles te weten te komen over het geheim van de geuze. Geuze maken is een ambacht.
Slechts een handvol mensen zijn nog vertrouwd met dit ambacht. Brouwingenieur Willem Van Herreweghen is een van hen. Willem onthulde de geheimen van spontane gisting. Hij legde haarfijn uit hoe met verschillende lambikken een uitstekende oude geuze gemaakt kan worden.
