Backpacking Forest Glen Preserve - Illinois
My wife and I spent a weekend backpacking Forest Glen Preserve, a fun 11-mile backpacking loop in Illinois about 3 hours South of Chicago. The trail surprised me with how beautiful and enjoyable this trip turned out to be (to be honest...I thought it'd be boring).
We hiked the loop clockwise and trekked 7.5 miles on day one to East Camp, then 3.5 miles on day two. It was a nice campsite with five individual sites, with a fire ring, garbage can, and picnic table in each and a shared privy. A stream is just a 5 minute walk downhill from the site as a water source (must be filtered, of course).
Hiking the backpack trail in Forest Glen requires a permit (even for day hiking), which can be found on their website:

Schaumburg is a northwestern suburb of Chicago, Illinois. It’s known for the massive Woodfield Mall, with hundreds of shops and restaurants. Nearby, the Legoland Discovery Center features kids' rides and a 4D cinema. The Ned Brown Preserve has paved trails and a chain of connected pools, collectively known as Busse Lake. To the west, the Trickster Gallery is dedicated to Native American culture and art.
Elk Grove Village is a village in Cook and DuPage counties in the U.S. state of Illinois. Located 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Chicago along the Golden Corridor, the Village of Elk Grove Village was incorporated on July 17, 1956. It is directly adjacent to O'Hare International Airport and is economically important to the Chicago metropolitan area due to its large industrial park, located on the eastern border of the village. The community is served by several Interstate highways including I-90, I-290/I-355/Route 53, and IL-390. Elk Grove is also expected to be served by the I-490 Western O'Hare Bypass upon completion of the project. The population was 33,127 at the 2010 census.
Glendale Heights is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 34,208 at the 2010 census. Glendale Heights was a small farming area served by the Glen Ellyn post office up until the 1950s, with a population of just 104 in 1959. Midland Enterprises ran by Charles and Harold Reskin started building houses in Glendale Heights in 1958. The Reskins bought two farms on Glen Ellyn Road north of North Avenue. Houses were first built on Glen Ellyn Road and Larry Lane near Fullerton Avenue. On June 16, 1959, a petition was filed and on July 13, the village became incorporated. The first election was held later on that summer on August 2.
The town was originally named Glendale as it was between Glen Ellyn and Bloomingdale, but after a conflict arose with the small town of Glendale in Southern Illinois, the city decided in March 1960 to add the term Heights, in reference to its different topographies, a difference of about 100 feet because of its location straddling the Valparaiso Morraine, thus becoming Glendale Heights.
South Elgin is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,985 at the 2010 census and estimated to be 24,755 in 2019. In 2007, Money magazine named South Elgin as 82nd of 100 entries in its America's Best Places to Live edition and again in 2011 as 98th of 100 entries. South Elgin was originally called Clintonville, in honor of early settler James Clinton. The name South Elgin was adopted in 1907.
Elgin is a city in Cook and Kane counties in the northern part of the U.S. state of Illinois. Located roughly 35 mi northwest of Chicago, it lies along the Fox River. As of 2019, the city had an estimated population of 110,849, making it the eighth-largest city in Illinois.

Rocky Glen Waterfall and Sawmill Creek Bluff Overlook - Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve
The Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Darien, IL is located about 25 miles southwest of Chicago in DuPage County. One of the most popular sections includes the Rocky Glen Waterfall and the Sawmill Creek Bluff Overlook, which is just a little over a mile round trip to visit from the parking lot. The preserve itself features 11 miles of multi-use trails for biking, hiking, etc. across 2,503 acres of land that encircles Argonne National Laboratory. The nature preserve is very well-marked.
