Romania to Bulgaria Border Crossing
July 23, 2021 ** Crossing the international border between Romania and Bulgaria via the Giurgiu Friendship Bridge over the Danube River.
The Danube Bridge (also known as the Friendship Bridge) is a steel truss bridge over the Danube River connecting the Bulgarian bank to the south with the Romanian bank to the north and the cities of Ruse and Giurgiu respectively. It is one of only two bridges connecting Romania and Bulgaria, the other one being the New Europe Bridge between the cities of Vidin and Calafat.
Opened on June 20, 1954 and designed by Soviet engineers, the bridge is 2,223 m (7,295 ft) long and was, at the time, the only bridge over the Danube shared by Bulgaria and Romania, with other traffic being served by ferries and land routes. Decorations were designed by Bulgarian architect Georgi Ovcharov. The bridge has two decks - a two lane motorway (on top) and a railway (below).
Sidewalks for pedestrians are also included (I saw several backpackers making the long walk).
The central part of the bridge (85 m) is mobile and can be lifted for oversized boats passage. The maintenance of the mobile part is Romania's responsibility and is periodically checked. The bridge was constructed in two and a half years with the aid of the Soviet Union.
The Soviets named it the Friendship Bridge, but, since the fall of the communist regimes in both countries, the bridge got the more functional name of Danube Bridge.
Border control stations are present on the bridge, due to its serving as a border crossing between the two countries. Since January 2007 there is no more customs control and the passport/identity card control is done on one desk either by the Bulgarian or the Romanian border police, being an internal border within the European Union. Border control will be completely removed when (if?) Bulgaria and Romania join the Schengen Agreement.
Since neither Bulgaria or Romania are part of the Euro economic zone, there are also several money exhchange booths on both sides of the river to exchange Romania lei for Bulgarian lev.
Bulgaria is my 159th country to visit. Trip note: I took a day trip and shared the costs with 3 other travelers from Bucharest to the ancient Bulgarian capital of Veliko Tarnovo - using the excellent services of Mr. Tripp in Bucharest.

My love for border cities took me 1 hour south of Romania's capital city Bucharest, to a small town of Giurgiu where you could see Ruse a small town in Bulgaria just across Danube river.

O plimbare de o zi prin orasul resedinta de Judet Giurgiu. Am vizitat principalele atractii si obiective turistice ale orasului. Am si mancat pizza La Taverna (primul loc pe Tripadvisor in Giurgiu). Am vizitat apoi Turnul cu Ceas din centru, parcul Alei, muzeul Teohari Antonescu, Podul Bizetz, Cetatea Giurgiu , Teatrul Tudor Vianu. Pe seara am fost sa vizitam Dunarea si doua restaurante de acolo: Perla si La Ponton.
Un oras mai putin frecventat ca oras turistic, are insa destule obiective pe care le poti admira sau unde iti poti petrece timpul. Mai ales faleza Dunarii pe seara este spectaculoasa. Recomand o cina la unul dintre restaurantele de acolo.

Snow adventure in Giurgiu, Romania
On our way back from Sofia to Bucharest got stuck in a massive overnight snow storm. We got stranded at the north exit from Giurgiu, and local police didn't allow anyone to take DN5 towards Bucharest - it was annoying, but few miles away two people died in their cars because of hypothermia (their bodies froze). So we slept for two nights in the car, with engine on all the time in order to keep us warm - stopped wisely at a petrol station - where we had quite a bit of comfort (toilet, coffees, teas, food and, most importantly, abundant fuel supply!)

Walking Across the Danube Friendship Bridge - Cheapest Way From Ruse, Bulgaria to Romania
What an amazing way to enter a new country... Crossing the mighty Danube river by walking across the friendship bridge! This is how we travelled from Bulgaria to Romania, and it was exhilarating!
We had wanted to travel from Ruse, Bulgaria to Bucharest in Romania. The only option by bus during the daytime was with a local company that was charging over the odds to take us across the bridge. The price to Bucharest from Giurgiu, on the Romanian side was considerably cheaper.
So, up for an adventure and always keen to save $10, we decided to hike across the Danube bridge instead. It was brilliant way to enter Romania!
We could not find much recent information online about the journey, whether it was possible or not even to walk across, so we thought we'd make a video to show others how it can be done.
