Gerrards Cross is a town and civil parish in the South Bucks district of Buckinghamshire, England. It is in the south of the county, separated from the London Borough of Hillingdon at Harefield by Denham. London is centred 19 miles east. Geographically large and suburban, Gerrards Cross is south of Chalfont St Peter and north of Fulmer and Hedgerley. It spans foothills of the Chiltern Hills and land on the right bank of the River Misbourne — it has a central public park, Gerrards Cross Common and Bulstrode Park Camp, a preserved area of land which was an Iron Age fortified encampment.
The town has a railway station on the Chiltern main line whose operator provides a fast service from the station to London and the M40 motorway is beside woodland on the southern boundary of the civil parish and the settlement has a commercial and leisure central area which is smaller than the nearby town of Beaconsfield.
The town name is new compared with the great bulk of English towns. Gerrards Cross did not exist in any formal sense until 1859 when it was formed by taking pieces out of the five parishes of Chalfont St Peter, Fulmer, Iver, Langley Marish and Upton to form a new ecclesiastical parish. It is named after the Gerrard family who in the early 17th century owned a manor here. At that time homes which were not farms were smallholdings clustered in a hamlet in the south of an elongated parish of Chalfont St Peter. Near its centre is site of an Iron Age minor hillfort, Bulstrode Park Camp, which is a scheduled ancient monument Originally named Jarrett's Cross before the times of the Gerrard family, after a highwayman.
The large and distinctive parish church is dedicated to St. James. It was built in 1861 as a memorial to Colonel George Alexander Reid[citation needed] who was MP for Windsor and designed by Sir William Tite in yellow brick with a Byzantine style dome, Chinese looking turrets and an Italianate Campanile. In 1969 the singer Lulu married Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees in the church. The actress Margaret Rutherford is buried with her husband Stringer Davis in the St James Church graveyard. The town has its own library, various restaurants and its own cinema, the Everyman Gerrards Cross.
Independent schools include Maltman's Green School (all girls), St Mary's, Gayhurst and Thorpe House. Students of secondary school age attend either one of the local grammar schools, such as Dr Challoner's Grammar School (Boys), Dr Challoner's High School (Girls), The Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe (Boys), John Hampden Grammar School (Boys), and Beaconsfield High School (Girls) Chesham Grammar School (Co-ed), or the local Upper School, Chalfonts Community College, which is the catchment school.
On the south side of the town is the Gerrards Cross Memorial Building, on the site of the former vicarage. The building was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and unveiled in 1922 to commemorate the town's losses during the First World War. It is the only example of a Lutyens war memorial designed with a functional purpose.
Just outside Gerrards Cross, on the A40 to Beaconsfield, is Wapseys Wood landfill site, one of the largest landfill sites in the UK, operated by Veolia Landfill Ltd. It accepts up to 900,000 tonnes of non hazardous waste each year from south Buckinghamshire, London and other areas. The landfill gas produced from the waste yields over 10 megawatts of electricity which is fed into the power grid.

Colne Valley Viaduct Progress & Gerrards Cross Tunnel Collapse - Exploring the Chiltern Network
HS2 is a new High Speed Railway under construction between London and Crewe, with future phases planned to take the line northwards towards Manchester, and other locations in the North of England. On the outskirts of London, the line will emerge from a tunnel at West Ruislip, and then almost immediately pass over a series of lakes and waterways on the 3.4km Colne Valley Viaduct. Construction has been progressing rapidly on the viaduct, so in the first half of this video I went to see how much progress had been made on the viaduct.
In the second half of this video, I travel a couple of miles down the line to Gerrards Cross, the site of a famous tunnel that collapsed over the railway whilst it was being constructed in the mid-2000s.
In this video I talk about the construction techniques for both the viaduct and the tunnel, as well as what went wrong with the tunnel. I might decide to turn this into a mini 'Exploring the Chiltern Network' series, so would be open to feedback on what you liked about this video, and what you'd like to see in the future.

Radlett is an affluent town in the county of Hertfordshire between St Albans and Borehamwood on Watling Street with a population of approximately 8,000. It is located in the council district of Hertsmere and is covered by two wards, Aldenham East and Aldenham West. It is located inside the M25 motorway.
Radlett lies in the valley of Tykes Water, a stream that runs north from Aldenham Reservoir to the River Colne. Now entirely surrounded by the Metropolitan Green Belt, it is seeing significant 'infill' development and pressure to relax the Green Belt restrictions.
Watling Street, which is the main road through Radlett, has a wide variety of local shops and restaurants, as well as some national chain stores, a Post Office inside the local Budgens supermarket, and the Radlett Centre with a 300-seat auditorium for various performances. Attached to the Radlett Centre is the local Public Library. There are three public houses in Radlett, the Cat and Fiddle, O'Sullivan's Bar and the Red Lion Hotel.
Radlett lies close to the M25 and M1 motorways and the A1 trunk road. There is a commuter rail service that connects Radlett railway station to south and central London including St. Pancras International. From Radlett there are also train services to London Gatwick and London Luton airports, whilst London Heathrow is a forty-minute drive away. There are two main buses that run through Radlett, both operated by UNO. The bus route 602 runs roughly East-West connecting Watford, Radlett, St Albans and Hatfield and the route 655 running roughly North-South connecting Hatfield, St Albans, Radlett and Borehamwood.

Gerrards Cross Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Buckinghamshire, and around 20 miles west, and slightly north, of central London is the town of Gerrards Cross (previously a village up until 2016).
The town's name comes from the Gerrard family who owned a manor here in the 17th century. However, it wasn't until 1859 that it became known as 'Gerrards Cross', presumably in relation to its site at the old crossroads of the London to Oxford road running from east to west and the Amersham to Windsor road running from north to south.
In 1906 the railway arrived in Gerrards Cross as part of the Great Western and Great Central Joint Railway. Today the station is situated on the Chiltern Main Line with direct services to London to the east and Banbury to the northwest. Trains to London Marylebone take around half an hour, making Gerrards Cross a practical commuter base, although this is priced into the housing market, where the average house price in the town is over £1.1 million (based on sold prices over the previous year at the time of writing, according to rightmove.co.uk).

Deganwy is a small town in Conwy County Borough in Wales with a population of 3,936. It lies in the Creuddyn Peninsula alongside Llandudno and Rhos-on-Sea. Historically part of Caernarfonshire, it is in a more English-speaking region of north Wales, with only 1 in 4 residents speaking Welsh as a first language. It is located south of Llandudno and to the east of Conwy, which is on the opposite side of the River Conwy, and with which it forms the Conwy community.
Indeed, the name Deganwy has been interpreted in modern times as Din-Gonwy, which would mean Fort on the River Conwy, but the historical spellings make it impossible for this to be the actual origin of the name although mentioned in Domesday Book is the territory of the Decanae tribe. The original wooden castle was rebuilt in stone after 1210. Deganwy is in the ecclesiastical parish of Llanrhos, and has a Victorian era Gothic parish church dedicated to All Saints.
Deganwy's most notable feature is Deganwy Castle, situated 110 m above the town, which, in the 6th century was fortified as the stronghold of Maelgwn Gwynedd, king of Gwynedd. Deganwy appears to have been the capital of Gwynedd at this time, but this was later moved to Aberffraw on Anglesey. The hill on which the castle was built was fortified many times over the centuries. It was the site of a Norman castle built around 1082 and occupied by Robert of Rhuddlan, and later by Llywelyn the Great and Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. The castle was later demolished by Edward I when Conwy Castle was built opposite so that only ruins remain today.
Deganwy has a railway station on the Llandudno branch line with an hourly train service, available on request, to and from Manchester Piccadilly and intermediate stations. The LNWR built at Deganwy a rail connected riverside quay and wharfs, largely for the purpose of exporting slate by coastal steamer. The slate was brought by rail from Blaenau Ffestiniog. A marina with its accompanying housing and hotel accommodation was established on the site of the former slate wharfs early in the 21st century.

Llandovery is a community and market town in Carmarthenshire, Wales, lying on the River Tywi and the A40/A483 roads. The town is served by Llandovery railway station, where there is a park and ride to Llanelli and Shrewsbury via the Heart of Wales Line. Llandovery — a corruption of Llanymddyfri, meaning Llan ymlith y dyfroedd (Church enclosure amidst the waters) — owes its name to its position between the River Tywi and the Afon Brân just upstream of their confluence. A smaller watercourse, the Bawddwr, runs through and under the town. Llandovery is twinned with Pluguffan in Brittany, France.
Attractions in the town include the remains of Llandovery Castle, built in 1110 and almost immediately captured by the Welsh, changing hands between Normans and Welsh until the reign of King Edward I of England. The castle was used by King Henry IV while on a sortie into Wales when he executed Llywelyn ap Gruffydd Fychan in the marketplace. It was later attacked by the forces of Owain Glyndŵr in 1403.
A 16-foot (4.9 m) high stainless steel statue to Llywelyn ap Gruffydd Fychan was unveiled in 2001 on the north side of Llandovery Castle, overlooking the place of his execution six hundred years earlier. He had led the army of King Henry IV on 'a wild goose chase' under the pretence of leading them to a secret rebel camp and an ambush of Glyndŵr's forces. King Henry lost patience with him, exposed the charade and had him half hanged, disemboweled in front of his own eyes, beheaded and quartered - the quarters salted and dispatched to other Welsh towns for public display.
The Physicians of Myddfai practised in the area. Llandovery is also the place where one of the first independent Welsh banks, The Black Ox, was established by a wealthy drover (later to become part of Lloyds TSB bank). The building is part of the King's Head inn which was the home of The Bank of the Black Ox.
Also in the town are a charity-run theatre (Llandovery Theatre), a heritage centre and Llandovery College. A tourist information and heritage centre is situated in the heart of the town. It houses exhibitions on the Tonn Press, the area's droving history and the nineteenth-century geologist Sir Roderick Impey Murchison, whose work in the area resulted in the assignment of the name Llandovery to rocks of a certain age across the entire world. The Llandovery Epoch is the earliest in the Silurian Period of geological time.
In a small market place in the centre of Llandovery is Llandovery Town Hall (1857-8) by the architect Richard Kyke Penson. There is a courtroom over an open market, in an Italianate style. The building has two storeys with open arcades. At the rear are police cells with iron grilles and entry to the courtroom (now used as a library) under a clock tower. Many visitors use Llandovery as a touring base for the western part of the Brecon Beacons National Park which lies immediately to the south of the town. For others it is a stop en route to Pembrokeshire and West Wales. Large numbers of motorcyclists congregate, particularly at weekends, in the West End cafe on Broad Street, part of the A40. The Dolaucothi Gold Mines are located 10 miles (16 km) away near Pumpsaint on the A482, a road which follows the line of the original Roman road to Llanio fort.
Llandovery lies immediately to the north of Brecon Beacons National Park and Fforest Fawr Geopark, an area whose geological heritage is celebrated. These designated landscapes are centred on Bannau Sir Gâr or the Carmarthen Fans, themselves a part of the Black Mountain, an upland area which extends north towards the town as Mynydd Myddfai and Mynydd Bach Trecastell. The small village of Myddfai is located within the National Park, four miles (6 km) to the south east of Llandovery. The Llyn Brianne dam is 11 miles (18 km) to the North located in rugged and impressive countryside above Rhandir-mwyn. On the journey to the dam, visitors also pass the site of Twm Siôn Cati's Cave at the RSPB's Dinas reserve.
