Barishal is a major city that lies on the banks of the Kirtankhola river in south-central Bangladesh. It is the largest city and the administrative headquarter of both Barisal District and Barisal Division.It is one of the oldest municipalities and river ports of the country. Barisal municipality was established in the year 1876 during the British rule in India and upgraded to City Corporation on 25 July 2002.
Barisal was conquered by Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji and was later a significant territory of the Delhi Sultanate and Bengal Sultanate. After the decline of the Suri Empire, the territory became a semi-independent area in the Mughal period because of heavy fighting between the Muslims and Hindu chiefs, although most parts of the city were totally under the control of the governors of the proto-industrialised Bengal Subah. In course of time, it fell under the Bengal Nawabs. Raja Ramranjan Chakravarty was put as a de jure king during the Bengal Presidency of the British, later passed to East Pakistan at independence and finally Bangladesh.

বরিশাল শহর থেকে ১৭ মাইল দূরে গৌরনদী থানায় বাটাজোর গ্রাম অবস্থিত। এখানে মহাত্মা অশ্বিনীকুমার দত্তের পৈতৃক বাসভূমি। বাটাজোরের দত্ত পরিবার বাংলার একটি সম্মানিত পরিবার। ব্রজমোহন দত্তের পুত্র অশ্বিনীকুমার দত্ত পিতার নামে বিএম কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। এ বংশের দ্বারকানাথ দত্তের কন্যা ফুলরেনু গুহ ভারতে আইনসভার সদস্য ও মন্ত্রী ছিলেন। ১৯২৭ খৃৃস্টাব্দে এখানে অশ্বিনী কুমার দত্তের নামে হাইস্কুল প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়। বাটাজোর গ্রামের কতিপয় বিখ্যাত ব্যক্তিগণ হলেন-
১. ব্রজমোহন দত্ত (১৮২৬ - ১৮৮৬), নদীয়ার স্মল কোর্ট জজ, পটুয়াখালিকে মহকুমায় উন্নীতকরনে ভূমিকা পালনকারী; অশ্বিনীকুমার দত্তের পিতা; গ্রাম: বাটাজোর। ২. অশ্বিনীকুমার দত্ত (২৫ জানুয়ারি ১৮৫৬ - ৭ নভেম্বর ১৯২৩) বিএম কলেজের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ও বরিশালের সর্বজন শ্রদ্ধেয় নেতা; গ্রাম: বাটাজোর। ৩. কামিনীকুমার দত্ত (?), অশি^নীকুমার দত্তের ভাই; গ্রাম: বাটাজোর। ৪. সরল কুমার দত্ত (?)অশ্বিনী কুমার দত্তের ভ্রাতুস্পুত্র এবং জেলা কংগ্রেসের সভাপতি; গ্রাম: বাটাজোর। ৫. সুকুমার দত্ত (২ ফেব্রæয়ারি ১৮৯১ - ৯ এপ্রিল ১৯৭০), ঢাকা বিশ^বিদ্যালয় ও দিল্লি¬ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ইংরেজির অধ্যাপক; দিল্লি রামযশ কলেজের অধ্যক্ষ; গ্রাম: বাটাজোর।

Bibir Pukur is the most popular and ancient pond of Barisal City. In Bengali, Pukur means pond. It is located in the heart of Barisal city.

How To Reach: Barisal District
Barisal is connected with Dhaka both by roads and rivers.
You can travel to Barisal district by road as well. Several buses drive from Gabtoli bus stand every hour to Barisal. Most of the buses go to Barisal by crossing Paturiya Ghat, but some of the bus services may also go by passing through Mawa Ghat.

বরিশাল নগরীর প্রাণকেন্দ্রে অবস্থিত ইতিহাস ও ঐতিহ্যের স্মারক ‘বিবির পুকুর’। এই পুকুরকে ঘিরেই ক্রমে প্রসারিত হয়েছে বরিশাল নগরী। বাংলাদেশের অন্য কোনো বিভাগীয় শহরের প্রাণকেন্দ্রে এ ধরনের পুকুর নেই। এটি বরিশাল নগরীর অন্যতম সৌন্দর্য ও ঐতিহ্য হিসেবে বিবেচিত। শতবর্ষের পুরনো এবং ঐতিহ্যবাহী এই পুকুরের ইতিহাস জানার আগ্রহ অনেক মানুষের।
ব্রিটিশ শাসনামলে ১৬০০ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের প্রথম দিকে খ্রিষ্টান ধর্মপ্রচারকরা (মিশনারি) বরিশালে আসেন। জানা যায়, উইলিয়াম কেরি পর্তুগিজ দস্যুদের কাছ থেকে জিন্নাত বিবি নামের এক মুসলিম মেয়েকে উদ্ধার করে তাকে লালন-পালন করেন। পরে এক মুসলিম যুবকের কাছে জিন্নাত বিবিকে বিয়ে দেয়া হয়। উইলিয়াম কেরি জিন্নাত বিবিকে জেনেট বলে ডাকতেন। ১৯০৮ সালে জিন্নাত বিবি জনগণের পানির কষ্ট দূর করার জন্য পুকুর খননের উদ্যোগ নেন এবং এ অনুযায়ী নগরীর সদর রোডের পূর্বপাশে ৪০০ ফুট দৈর্ঘ্য ও ১৮৫০ ফুট প্রস্থ একটি পুকুর খনন করা হয়। তখন থেকেই পুকুরটি ‘বিবির পুকুর’ নামে পরিচিতি লাভ করে।
একসময় কীর্তনখোলা নদীর সাথে এ পুকুরের দু’টি সংযোগ ছিল এবং এতে নিয়মিত জোয়ার ভাটা প্রবাহমান ছিল। সংযোগ দু’টির একটি বরিশাল সার্কিট হাউজ হয়ে মৃতপ্রায় ভাটার খালের মাধ্যমে কীর্তনখোলায় এবং অন্যটি নগরীর গির্জা মহল্লার পাশ দিয়ে বয়ে যাওয়া বিলুপ্ত খালের মাধ্যমে কীর্তনখোলা নদীর সাথে যুক্ত ছিল।
সংস্কার ও উন্নয়ন : বরিশাল পৌরসভা স্থাপনের পর থেকেই বিবির পুকুরটি বিভিন্নভাবে সংস্কার ও পুনর্খনন করা হয়। ’৯০-এর দশকে পৌর চেয়ারম্যান আহসান হাবিব কামাল পুকুরটির ঐতিহ্য রক্ষায় বিভিন্ন পরিকল্পনা গ্রহণ করলেও তা যথাযথভাবে বাস্তবায়িত হয়নি। ২০০৩ সালে অ্যাডভোকেট মো: মজিবর রহমান সরোয়ার মেয়র থাকাকালে বিবির পুকুরের চারপাশ পাকা করে ওয়াকওয়ে নির্মাণ করা হয়।
২০০৮ সালে শওকত হোসেন হিরণ মেয়র নির্বাচিত হওয়ার পর বিবির পুকুরের ঐতিহ্য রক্ষা এবং সৌন্দর্র্য বর্ধনে নানামুখী কার্যক্রম গ্রহণ করেন। এর মধ্যে পুকুরের চারপাশে ঝুলন্ত পার্ক, বিশ্রাম নেয়ার জন্য বেঞ্চ, অত্যাধুনিক গ্রিল ও পুকুরটির শোভা বৃদ্ধির জন্য বিভিন্ন ধরনের লাইটিং স্থাপন প্রকল্প গ্রহণ করেন। পাশাপাশি বিবির পুকুরের পাশেই উন্মুক্ত বিনোদন কেন্দ্র পাবলিক স্কয়ার (বর্তমানে হিরণ স্কয়ার নামে পরিচিত) এবং পুকুরের মধ্যে ফোয়ারা স্থাপন করেন।
বর্তমান অবস্থা : বিবির পুকুর বর্তমানে নাগরিক বিনোদনের একটি স্থান হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হচ্ছে। বিকেলে ও সন্ধ্যায় জনগণ আড্ডা ও অবসর সময় কাটানোর জন্য পুকুর পাড়ে ও হিরণ স্কয়ারে জড়ো হয়।
