Bhutan Hiking Vlog: Lingshi - Laya - Gasa Trek Day 1

Vlog on the morning of Day 1 of our 12 Day Bhutan Lingshi-Laya-Gasa Trek.

On the first day of the trek we drove from Paro past Drukgyal Dzong to Shana.
There we met the crew, had our things loaded onto horses and started on foot.

We tried to reach Soi Thangthanka (23km distance from Shana), but due to muddy tracks and slow progress dark caught us before we got there.

We made camp about 6km short of Soi Thangthanka in a damp forest which very pleasant - but by that time we were too exhausted to care!

Bhutan Hiking Vlog: Lingshi - Laya - Gasa Trek Day 10

Vlog on the morning of Day 10 of our 12 Day Bhutan Lingshi-Laya-Gasa Trek.

We woke up to sunshine and an amazing scenery on the morning of day 10 in Laya, a small mountain village at the northern end of Bhutan, very close to the Chinese border.

This village may seem remote (and they refuse to get a road built), but is actually pretty wealthy as they collect cordyceps that they sell for a lot of money to China to be used as herbal remedy for all sorts of things.

Day 9 was supposed to be fairly short, but because one of the bridges on our way to Koina was washed away, we had to go up the mountain and back down again on the other side. We reached our final destination just as it was getting dark.

Hidden Hotspring: Duenmang Tshachu, Zhemgang
I had heard of a hidden hotspring in Zhemgang.

It's on a cliff

????You have to walk for hours

????The path is steep and dangerous .

So off we went to this mysterious hotspring named Duenmang back in 2019. I had kept this video shelved so that it could be put together with an overall tourism video for Zhemgang district but then covid happened. So here it is finally, a sneak peek into a hidden destination that I still cant believe I had the good fortune of visiting????????

Best Festivals in Bhutan | Bhutan Festival Series | Compilation of the Festivals in Bhutan

Today, we are sharing our Bhutan tourism and festival series, taking you on a journey to Bhutan. The country of Bhutan is famous for beautiful monasteries and breathtaking landscapes. It's a Buddhist country on the eastern edge of the Himalayas and serves as a popular trekking destination.

The Druk Wangyel Festival at Dochula happens annually on the 13th of December. Though less than a decade old, the new choreography and costumes make this festival the most unique event in Bhutan.

Paro Tshechu is one of the most famous festivals in Bhutan which is held for 5 days beginning on the 10the day of the 2nd Bhutanese lunar month and ends on the 15th day. On the last day of the celebration, a gigantic Thangkha (Thongdrel) of Guru Rinpoche will be displayed inside the Dzong.

The “Royal Highlander Festival” is being organized at Laya, Gasa District to sensitize the highlanders on the decline of yak farming with increased vulnerability from instantly short-term income-generating activities that seem to be challenging the sustainability of livelihoods in the future in the highlands. The festival is also aimed to enlighten stakeholders on the importance of their spirited participation in enhancing the economic opportunity of the highlanders.

Punakha Tshechu, as all Tshechu festivals, honors Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rimpoche, the precious yogi and saint who is credited with having introduced Tantric Buddhism throughout the Himalayas. It is 3 days long festival that begins on the 10th day of the 1st month of the Buddhist lunar calendar.

The best time for Bhutan travel and tourism is October to December when the air and sky are most fresh and clear. Bhutan is a bit cooler in January and February, but the climate is ideal through late spring. Bhutan is considered by many to be an excellent value for travel and tourism.

For many years, the culture was isolated from the rest of the world, but now, many travelers find that Bhutan is great to travel destination. In the past, Bhutan was one of the poorest countries in Asia, but now it has one of the world's fastest-growing economies. Bhutan is very safe, and the crime rate is very low. Both petty crime and violent crime are very rare and uncommon.

Tourists who want to visit Bhutan are required to have a visa and must book their holiday through a Bhutanese tour operator. We would be happy to help you plan your next holiday to Bhutan!

Bhutan Hiking Vlog: Lingshi - Laya - Gasa Trek Day 13

Vlog on the morning of Day 13 of our 13 Day Bhutan Lingshi-Laya-Gasa Trek.

After our rest day at Gasa Tsachu, where we washed our clothes, relaxed and bathed in the hot springs, it was time to finally complete our trek.

We had to go a short distance (5km) to a nearby 'road' where the nephew of our guide Dorji met us and the crew. We had a few celebratory drinks and snacks, all our gear was loaded onto a truck and we drove back for around 4h to make it to Punakha.

Before we headed into the hotel, we visited the Punakha Dzong, a combination of monastery, temple and administrative building for the district.

Bhutan Hiking Vlog: Lingshi - Laya - Gasa Trek Day 11

Vlog on the morning of Day 11 of our 12 Day Bhutan Lingshi-Laya-Gasa Trek.

We had spent the night in Koina, a small guest house wedged between massive mountains. A nearby campsite that once existed had been crushed by rocks the year before so we were all a little worried about what could happen at night.

There was literally no place at all to pitch a tent, the ground was either really muddy/swampy or just sharp and big rocks. The guest house was dirty and full of smoke (as it was also used to cook in - with open fires! -, but we made due.

Apparently we also got visited by a rat at night, fortunately neither me nor my brother even noticed - we just heard all the stories in the morning.

Day 11 was one of the longest stretches of the trek, going over the Bale La pass (3900m) and then 1600m down towards Gasa. We reached Gasa around 5pm and were pretty exhausted. Then our guide told us that Gasa Tsachu (which is our actual destination) was just a 'little bit more'. That little bit more turned out to be almost another 2h down the mountain and we arrived in our accommodation for the night, the Royal Guest House, just as it was getting dark.

Bhutan Tiger's Nest: Lingshi - Laya - Gasa Trek Preparation Day

This is the preparation day for our 12 Day Bhutan Lingshi-Laya-Gasa Trek, going up to Paro Taktsang - better known as the Tiger's Nest!

The Tiger's Nest is the spiritual centre of Bhutan. In Buddhist belief, the Guru came to this place riding on his wife (in the form of a tigress) and brought Buddhism to Bhutan.

This is the video of the preparation day, a bit of a mix between DSLR and iPhone (3gs) footage, but as a small visual log entry I wanted to put it up anyways :)
