Places to see in ( Castleford - UK )

Castleford is a town in the metropolitan borough of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, to the north of the town centre the River Calder joins the River Aire and the Aire and Calder Navigation.

Castleford is the site of a Roman settlement. Within the historical Castleford Borough are the suburbs of Airedale, Cutsyke, Ferry Fryston, Fryston, Glasshoughton, Half Acres, Hightown, Lock Lane, Wheldale and Whitwood. Castleford is home to the rugby league Super League team Castleford Tigers.

Queen’s Park in Castleford provides evidence of Roundhouses used by the Anglo Saxons. This was a strategic area due to the views of the entire settlement. The history of the area includes Oliver Cromwell’s encampment in nearby Knottingley and Ferrybridge (originally thought to be in Castleford itself) whilst his forces laid siege to Pontefract Castle.

Castleford is only 0.93 miles (1.5 km) away from the M62 at Junction 32 via the A656 road. It has other A roads that criss-cross the town and provide access to Junction 31 on the same motorway. The River Aire and the River Calder have a confluence just north west of the town and also feed the Aire and Calder Navigation. Whilst it is an industrial waterway, it also hosts tourism with moorings on the Castleford Cut of the Navigation.

Castleford also had a second service to Leeds that left eastwards and swung north onto the former Castleford to Garforth Line, which would see services calling at Ledston & Kippax, before arriving in Garforth and continuing to Leeds.

Places to see in ( Leeds - UK )

Leeds is a city in the northern English county of Yorkshire. On the south bank of the River Aire, the Royal Armouries houses the national collection of arms and artillery. Across the river, the redeveloped industrial area around Call Lane is famed for bars and live music venues under converted railway arches. Leeds Kirkgate Market features hundreds of indoor and outdoor stalls.

Leeds is a local government district of West Yorkshire, England, governed by Leeds City Council, with the status of a city and metropolitan borough. The metropolitan district includes the administrative centre Leeds and the ten towns of Farsley, Garforth, Guiseley, Horsforth, Morley, Otley, Pudsey, Rothwell, Wetherby and Yeadon.

The current city boundaries were set on 1 April 1974 by the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, as part a reform of local government in England. The city is a merger of eleven former local government districts; the unitary City and County Borough of Leeds combined with the municipal boroughs of Morley and Pudsey, the urban districts of Aireborough, Garforth, Horsforth, Otley and Rothwell, and parts of the rural districts of Tadcaster, Wharfedale and Wetherby from the West Riding of Yorkshire.

For its first 12 years the city had a two-tier system of local government; Leeds City Council shared power with the West Yorkshire County Council. Since the Local Government Act 1985 Leeds City Council has effectively been a unitary authority, serving as the sole executive, deliberative and legislative body responsible for local policy, setting council tax, and allocating budget in the city, and is a member of the Leeds City Region Partnership. Thc City of Leeds is divided into 31 civil parishes and a single unparished area.

LEEDS CITY CENTRE

We visit LEEDS CITY CENTRE in West Yorkshire, England for a walking tour to see what Leeds has to offer, from shops to bars and restaurants, corn exchange, town hall and more. Come with us!
Also watch our Leeds Walking Tour -

Leeds City Centre has a reputation for great shopping, fantastic old shopping arcades, great city centre bars, and of course hundred and hundreds of great shops.

We start our Leeds tour at Leeds Railway Station and the Queens Hotel on Wellington Street. From there we cross over into City Square for a look at the great outdoor restaurants here.

From City Square we head across Park Road and down Boar Lane where we see Leeds City Centre coming to life. Ahead of us is Leeds Corn Exchange but rather than visit there now we take a walk up Briggate, one of the main shopping streets here in Leeds City Centre.

Briggate is thriving as usual, and we stop to check out some street performers before heading into one of the old shopping arcades that are just fabulous to walk through.

We then come onto New Market Street and head into Leeds Corn Exchange before heading up into Leeds Kirkgate Market, onto Vicar Lane and and into some of the other arcades like The Victoria Quarter and County Arcade.

Other Leeds places we visit in this walking tour are Kirkgate, Albion Street, Bond Street and Commercial Street, before heading up to The Headrow.

On The Headrow we pass Broad Gate and St John's Shopping Centre in Dortmund Square as well as The Light before we reach Leeds Art Gallery and Leeds Town Hall in Victoria Square.

Finishing off our Leeds Walking Tour we take a walk around the beautiful Park Square and check out St Paul's House before coming to an end at Box Leeds on Infirmary Street.

Some of the things Leeds is famous for:
1) Millennium Square.
2) Leeds Victoria Quarter.
3) Royal Armouries Museum.
4) Party at a music festival.
5) Emmerdale Studio Experience.
6) Leeds Corn Exchange.
7) Thackray Medical Museum.
8) Leeds City Centre.
9) Leeds United Football Club
10) Leeds Arena concerts

Trains at Garforth

With just a few minutes between the “big cats” there is just enough time to film a few trains before the train back to Manchester arrives.

The Return to the Station where it all began

Back on the 16th January 2012 when SimOnTrains started vlooging. My first vlog featured a railway station in Yorkshire before the journey down to London, a place called Garforth but went to Garforth station and not East Garforth station. But Garforth was the very first location I took a journey to.

After watching Geoff Marshall's USA 2022 road trip, It decided it was time to head back to where it all began which was Garforth and not Moorgate!

Bit visiting the station of Micklefield, East Garforth, Garforth and Cross Gates seeing TransPennine Express, Northern and Cross Country Trains passing through this area in Yorkshire.
