Places to see in ( Birmingham - USA )

Places to see in ( Birmingham - USA )

Birmingham is the largest city in the state of Alabama. With more than 1.2 million people in the metropolitan area, Birmingham is the cultural and economic heart of Alabama. In much of the world, Birmingham is best remembered as the site of racist violence, bombings, and nonviolent protest in the 1960s, when the city was still racially segregated by law. Visitors today are often surprised to find a pleasant green city of ridges and valleys, with many attractive views and friendly, hospitable people.

From its founding through the end of the 1960s, Birmingham was a primary industrial center of the southern United States. Its growth from 1881 through 1920 earned it nicknames such as The Magic City and The Pittsburgh of the South. Its major industries were iron and steel production. Major components of the railroad industry, rails and railroad cars, were manufactured in Birmingham. Since the 1860s, the two primary hubs of railroading in the Deep South have been Birmingham and Atlanta. The economy diversified in the latter half of the 20th century. Banking, telecommunications, transportation, electrical power transmission, medical care, college education, and insurance have become major economic activities. Birmingham ranks as one of the largest banking centers in the U.S. Also, it is among the most important business centers in the Southeast.

In higher education, Birmingham has been the location of the University of Alabama School of Medicine (formerly the Medical College of Alabama) and the University of Alabama School of Dentistry since 1947. In 1969 it gained the University of Alabama at Birmingham, one of three main campuses of the University of Alabama System. It is home to three private institutions: Samford University, Birmingham-Southern College, and Miles College. The Birmingham area has major colleges of medicine, dentistry, optometry, physical therapy, pharmacy, law, engineering, and nursing. The city has three of the state's five law schools: Cumberland School of Law, Birmingham School of Law, and Miles Law School. Birmingham is also the headquarters of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the Southeastern Conference, one of the major U.S. collegiate athletic conferences.

Birmingham occupies Jones Valley, flanked by long parallel mountain ridges (tailing ends of the Appalachian Mountains) running from northeast to southwest. The valley is drained by small creeks (Village Creek, Valley Creek) which flow into the Black Warrior River. The valley was bisected by the principal railroad corridor, along which most of the early manufacturing operations began. Suburbs in the Birmingham–Hoover metropolitan area :

Tijuana To Cataviña Scenic Road Trip [4K] | Baja California | Explore Mexico

Baja California ('Lower California'), officially the Free and Sovereign State of Baja California is a state in Mexico. It is the northernmost and westernmost of the 32 federal entities of Mexico. Before becoming a state in 1952, the area was known as the North Territory of Baja California. It has an area of 70,113 km2 (27,071 sq mi) (3.57% of the land mass of Mexico) and comprises the northern half of the Baja California Peninsula, north of the 28th parallel, plus oceanic Guadalupe Island. The mainland portion of the state is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean; on the east by Sonora, the U.S. state of Arizona, and the Gulf of California; on the north by the U.S. state of California; and on the south by Baja California Sur.

The state has an estimated population of 3,769,020 (2020), significantly higher than the sparsely populated Baja California Sur to the south, and similar to San Diego County, California, to its north. Over 75% of the population lives in the capital city, Mexicali; in Ensenada; or in Tijuana. Other important cities include San Felipe, Rosarito and Tecate. The population of the state is composed of Mestizos, mostly migrants from other parts of Mexico, and, as with most northern Mexican states, a large population of Mexicans of Spanish ancestry, and also a large minority group of East Asian, Middle Eastern and indigenous descent. Additionally, there is a large immigrant population from the United States due to its proximity to San Diego and the lower cost of living compared to San Diego. There is also a significant population from Central America. Many immigrants moved to Baja California for a better quality of life and the number of higher-paying jobs in comparison to the rest of Mexico and Latin America.

Baja California is the twelfth largest state by area in Mexico. Its geography ranges from beaches to forests and deserts. The backbone of the state is the Sierra de Baja California, where Picacho del Diablo, the highest point of the peninsula, is located. This mountain range effectively divides the weather patterns in the state. In the northwest, the weather is semi-dry and Mediterranean. In the narrow center, the weather changes to be more humid due to altitude. It is in this area where a few valleys can be found, such as the Valle de Guadalupe, the major wine-producing area in Mexico. To the east of the mountain range, the Sonoran Desert dominates the landscape. In the south, the weather becomes drier and gives way to the Vizcaíno Desert. The state is also home to numerous islands off both of its shores. In fact, the westernmost point in Mexico, Guadalupe Island, is part of Baja California. The Coronado Islands, Todos Santos islands and Cedros Island are also on the Pacific shore. On the Gulf of California, the biggest island is Angel de la Guarda Island, separated from the peninsula by the deep and narrow Canal de Ballenas.

Cataviña is a small town on Federal Highway 1 in the Mexican state of Baja California. It is located 118 km (74 mi) south of El Rosario and 106 km (66 mi) north of the junction of Federal Highway 12 to Bahía de los Ángeles.

The local economy is dependent on tourism, ranching (Rancho Santa Inés, on the outskirts of the town, is an ejido held in common by the residents), and a couple of private vendors selling gasoline from 55 gallon barrels. Those planning a trip that includes Cataviña, need to make sure to purchase enough fuel to get from El Rosario to Villa Jesús María, to avoid the necessity of buying the private vendor gasoline just mentioned (the Pemex station in Cataviña is closed, permanently.)

Cataviña has a first-rate hotel developed by the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism in the Mexican government. Nearby are some cave paintings and a field of giant rocks, mixed with desert vegetation, which make the area a place visited for lovers of ecotourism.

Ram-Headed Southern Storyteller (Birmingham, Alabama)

We stopped by to take a small video of it. Unfortunately, we had a horrible homeless person swearing at us most of the time. PRO TIP: You might want to visit in the day, or, stay in your car lol.

Ram-Headed Southern Storyteller
Address: 20th St. S., Birmingham, AL
Directions: 5 Points. 11th Avenue, 20th St. S and Magnolia S.

------

Some folks look at Frank Fleming's The Storyteller sculpture and only see a human body with the head of a goat. To be fair, you don't normally find something like ram-man (as he's known) on public art in the Deep South -- unless you're looking at one of Fleming's other sculptures.

Is it godless New York liberal culture in Birmingham? Is it an after-midnight rendezvous for red-eyed pagans? Are the five frogs listening to goat-guy really arranged at the points of a satanic pentagram?

Ram head.
Well, no. Fleming (1940-2018) was an Alabama native. He sculpted animals because of Southern and older storytelling traditions employing smarty-pants creatures (think Br'er Rabbit), and because he wanted to convey the idea of storytelling as a peaceable kingdom. He also wanted the sculpture to interest children.

The Storyteller sits on a stump, reading to his animal pals from an open book, holding a tall staff topped with an owl. The audience animals sit on circular platforms, a hare rides on the back of a tortoise. Five frogs spit water arcs crisscrossing the fountain.

It's in front of a Methodist church, where we'd expect a Christ counseling his flock rather than Ram-Man. But the sculpture's satanic connection is an urban legend. The only hellish thing we noticed is its location -- in the heart of Birmingham's busy Five Points district, which meant we had to park several blocks away in order to walk to see the sculpture.
