A real time drive around the coastline of the United Kingdom - Day 8

Join us as we make our 5,108 mile real time drive by road, around the coastline of the United Kingdom. Full disclosure – we haven’t completed Northern Ireland yet but when we do we’ll add that to the total mileage.

The intention was to take the longest possible route, driving as close to the coast as possible and never using a Motorway! We tried to see as much of our coastline as we could.

The journey had some dark and drizzly days to begin with, but many were sunny and truly beautiful, especially the west coast of Scotland.

The journey took about 30 full days to complete. Our campervan ‘Minty’ served us very well; he is a 2005 Timberland Independence with a 2.8L Fiat Ducato manual gearbox.

In order to find the route closest to the coast we needed to use Google Maps, hence the constant verbal navigation by whomever wasn’t driving. Oh, and sorry about Bev’s occasional swearing!

On days 1 and 2 we learned that even in UK conditions the GoPro Hero 9 could not handle 4k and overheated a number of times, hence the occasional editing fades and the noise produced by the vents trying to cool the camera. We resolved this by changing to 1080p and had no further overheating and therefore very few edits.

I gave lots of thought to producing silent videos or to leave all voice and background noise in and unedited. If you don’t like our noise, please turn us down!

We had lockdowns, breakdowns, flat tyres, closed roads, golf courses, the occasional wrong turn and all manner of friendly disagreements but, overall, we loved the adventure.

It’s a long ride, so buckle up!!

Jon, Bev and Charlie

The Preston Marriott Hotel, Lancashire, England. Close to the M55 and M6 motorways

The Preston Marriott Hotel is part of the Marriott Bonvoy worldwide chain of hotels and used to be a Victorian manor house. 4-Star Preston Hotel | Preston Marriott Hotel

The Hotel is located in Preston, which is in the county of Lancashire in the United Kingdom.

Its amazingly comfortable beds and proximity to major motorways make this a great choice of hotel.

The Preston Marriott hotel is close to the M6 and M55 motorways, for us, there was certainly not a noise issue though.

We used the Preston Marriott Hotel as a base to visit both Chester and Fleetwood.

The room in the video is room number 366.

You can check out my full review at EarsAndIdeas.com

There is also a video showing the drive from the M6 to the Hotel at

STEAMIN' On The Wonderful Watercress Line

We take a trip on the magical Watercress Line, running from Alresford to Alton, through 10 miles of beautiful Hampshire countryside, adjacent to the South Downs National Park. Our engine today was 30925 – SR Schools Class ‘Cheltenham’.

The Schools class were the most powerful 4-4-0 type locomotives to operate in this country and were a very successful design, used for passenger and freight duties. They were named after the famous public schools within the area then served by the Southern Railway, a publicity masterstroke given the popularity of train spotting with schoolboys at the time.

Silverdale Cove, Lancashire

Silverdale is a village and civil parish within the City of Lancaster in Lancashire, England. The village stands on Morecambe Bay, near the border with Cumbria, 4.5 miles (7 km) north west of Carnforth and 8.5 miles (14 km) north of Lancaster. The parish had a population of 1,545 recorded in the 2001 census, reducing slightly to 1,519 at the 2011 Census.

Silverdale forms part of the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The RSPB's Leighton Moss nature reserve is close to the village. The National Trust owns several pieces of land in the area. The former Tarmac-owned Trowbarrow quarry is now a SSSI and popular climbing location. The Lancashire Coastal Way footpath goes from Silverdale to Freckleton, and the Cumbria Coastal Way goes from Silverdale to Gretna.

First Taste of Pub Camping : Van Park Up Meets Romans!

Join us as we venture out of our comfort zone and try pub car park stealth camping for the first time. We've only used campsites so far, so this is definitely a new experience for us. It's both nerve-wracking and exciting!

Subscribe:

The pub we found had the extra benefit of being very close to the Roman attractions of Caerleon in South Wales. We managed to dodge the Great British weather and walk to the amphitheatre and explore the museums before decided on staying in the pub car park for the night.

The best thing (we think) about this concept of pub stopovers for campervans is that pubs are everywhere, and usually have something nearby to explore.

There's a bunch of ways to find pubs that allow parking overnight for vans, campers and motorhomes. Britstops, Park4Night & Search4sites are three good options that we are looking to explore more. We found the Ship Inn via Search4Sites initially and went in to ask whether we could stay.

It was an exciting first park up that we hope will be the first of many and a stepping stone to wild park ups. We don't think we will ever qualify as a stealth van, but will be looking for more interesting park ups - any ideas do let us know.

We hope you enjoy.
