Day Trip to Fort Worth ???? (FULL EPISODE) S13 E12
We know you've probably heard Fort Worth called Cowtown, but did you know it had a name before that, too? Legend is that back in the 19th century, Fort Worth was so calm and quiet that a panther wandered into town and decided to take a nap in the middle of the street. Is it true? We're not sure, but what we do know is that Fort Worth is no longer such a sleepy place. It's a beautiful, lively, busy cityscape, full of shopping and specialty foods and public art.
On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy gave an impromptu speech to thousands of rain-drenched spectators on the front steps of the historic Hotel Texas (now the Hilton Fort Worth), followed by a formal presentation at the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce breakfast. The JFK Tribute in Fort Worth’s General Worth Square marks the place and occasion of the President’s historic visit with a beautiful bronze statue set within an elegant plaza.
The Fort Worth Water Gardens is a refreshing oasis located downtown, adjacent to the Fort Worth Convention Center. The Water Gardens is an architectural and engineering marvel to be enjoyed any time of the year. Fort Stockton, Texas, has a fort that you can visit on a tour by foot or driving. You will see buildings that were part of the fort in 1860 ; quite a fun sightseeing trip. Join me on a sunny afternoon drive from Bakersfield, Texas to Fort Stockton, Texas along Interstate 10. It's a bright sunny day with clear skies and wide open spaces as we head through West Texas! The highway is clear and straight with fast speed limits and very little traffic.
This part of West Texas is far away from all of the major cities. Bakersfield, Texas is a small unincorporated community that has an estimated 30 people living in it. But don't worry, there is a gas station if you need to fill up. At this point Bakersfield, Texas is basically a ghost town as everyone moves away to find opportunity elsewhere. Most people passing through are commercial truckers going between cities or tourists on the way to visit Marfa or Big Bend.
This drive ends in Fort Stockton, Texas. Fort Stockton is the county seat of Pecos County, Texas. This means that Fort Stockton is the city in Pecos County where the Pecos County Courthouse is located. This brings business to the area as people need to come to access county services, have court cases, look up information about mineral rights for oil and gas leases, and conduct research about the legal owners of real estate.
Fort Stockton, Texas is also a small town with a population of under 3000. It was a former military outpost that defended a source of fresh water in the middle of the desert. Ground water and fresh drinking water is an important resource in West Texas. Fort Stockton was part of the frontier fort system and had Buffalo Soldiers.

Fort Stockton Texas
A short stay in a quiet town in West Texas. A visit to some the historical sites in downtown Fort Stockton. Our last stop in Texas.
Fading West Through Texas from Houston, through Austin to Fort Stockton
We spend over two days driving West through Texas, stopping in Houston and Austin, then on to the arid plains and plateaus of West Texas near El Paso. We continue our series 30 Days across America after getting caught in traffic leaving New Orleans.
We finally make it to Houston where we book a last minute stay at the Omni. The next day we drive on to Austin and enjoy the tastes of the Sour Duck Market and a quick walk by the river.
From Austin, we head to the Western plains of Texas through towns like Iraan and stop in Fort Stockton for lunch at Bien Venidos for some Mexican food, then a stroll around the historic fort. As the Sun fades from the sky we drive on toward El Paso as we head out of Texas.

Excellent Pet-Friendly Hotel at Best Western Plus Fort Stockton in Texas
I was going on a 5-day cross-country road trip with my dog, Kuma, and I needed to stop in between Houston and El Paso. After doing some research, Fort Stockton came up as an option and the Best Western Plus hotel had rave reviews on TripAdvisor; especially for being an excellent pet-friendly hotel.

World's Largest Roadrunner & Historic Fort Stockton
Fort Stockton is known for its historic fort which was the home of many buffalo soldiers. A visit to the site is a walk back in time to see some of the many buildings still standing at the fort, learn a bit about their part in this area of Texas and the community surrounding.
