Unbelievable: American Military Cemetery Right in the Heart of Manila

Wait until you see the surprise we found in the shadow of skyscrapers in the middle of downtown Manila in the Philippines. It's a cemetery filled with thousands of American heroes. Turns out these halloween green hills - with rows of marble cross headstones lined up in formation - make up the Manila American Cemetery. It's one of 26 American military cemeteries around the world - from Europe to Africa to Asia.

Join us for this special Veterans Day edition of Window Seat, as we give you a tour of this sacred ground, and tell you the story of one of the 29 Medal of Honor recipients buried here.

Eagle’s Nest - The Vanderbilt Mansion of the Gold Coast age - Interior

In the summer of 1910, William K. Vanderbilt II bought 20 acres on a wooded hill above Northport Bay. There, he commissioned the renowned New York City architecture firm of Warren & Wetmore to build him a summer house. The partners had designed and built Grand Central Terminal in New York City (1903-13) for his great-grandfather Cornelius Vanderbilt’ s (1794-1877) New York Central Railroad.

Between 1910 and 1936 the architects expanded the house into a stunning Spanish-Revival style mansion Vanderbilt called Eagle’s Nest. Over the years, Vanderbilt purchased more land and expanded the estate to 43 acres. One of the few remaining Gold Coast mansions, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A notable feature of the 24-room mansion – in addition to its distinctive architecture – is the elegant decorative ironwork created by Samuel Yellin, considered the greatest iron artisan of his time. He created window grilles, door handles, light fixtures, railings, planters, gates and weather vanes for the house. Yellin’s work can be found in 45 states, and adorns the Federal Reserve Bank in New York City, Yale University, private homes, significant buildings, and other Gold Coast mansions.

This remarkable mansion offers an intimate look at the life of a privileged family from the Jazz Age through the Second World War. The rooms are as William and Rosamund Vanderbilt left them, filled with priceless art, furnishings and personal possessions. When visitors walk through the Vanderbilt mansion, they enter a “living museum,” an enchanting time capsule of a vanished era.

My Town Kings Park - Drone Flight plus Kings Park Psychiatric Center

Kings Park by Drone - Recorded July 2019

I find it absolutely amazing that this beautiful coastal town was built around the massive 11,000 patient capacity Kings Park Psychiatric Center, which employed most of the town at its peak. The Kings Park Psych Center closed its doors in 1996. Although abandoned, it still is a Long Island relic and living museum piece of early 20th century psychiatric treatment.

Biking tour vs. self-guided walking tour of Intramuros

Location: Manila, Philippines
Recorded: November 19, 2022
Vlog 76

Welcome to our Philippines vlog! Today was our first day in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Patricia wanted to do a bike tour of Intramuros, the historic city center of Manila under Spanish colonization. Matt's brother, Sam, visited us while we were in the Philippines. The boys did not want to do a 2 and 1/2 hour bike tour and walked around Intramuros by themselves.

Patricia toured with Bambike Ecotours. The tour lasted 2 an 1/2 hours and the cost was $37. Honestly, the boys saw everything Patricia saw. The landmarks have a lot of informative information so you could easily visit and learn the history of Intramuros without paying for a tour. We recommend this!

We enjoyed exploring the home to many Spanish-era landmarks. We learned about Baluarte de San Diego, the walls of Intramuros, Puerta Real Gardens, Barangay 666 City of Manila, Plaza Espana: Statue of King Philip II, Manila Metropolitan Cathedral, San Agustin Church, and Fort Santiago.

After a long day of touring, we tried the traditional Filipino dish, Sisig.

We hope you enjoy the vlog, and we are excited to show you more of the Philippines over the next few days!

Subscribe if you are interested in following along with us as we travel the world for a year!

Long Island's Best Restaurant, EatMosaic in St. James, NY

What is the best restaurant on Long Island? Many will say that it is eatMosaic in St. James, New York.

Do you really need to go into the New York City to experience an excellent tasting menu?

While Long Island has many amazing restaurants. Only one stands above the rest in terms of service, quality, uniqueness, use of ingredients and professionalism that is still approachable to everyday people. eatMosaic matches that criteria! Can it be the best restaurant in New York? Definitely the best restaurant on Long Island.

What makes it interesting is that the restaurant is not located in a castle, grand hotel, or expensive city rental spot. You can easily drive by the strip mall where it calls home for the past many years.

#eatMosaic #LongIslandRestaurant #TopRestaurant

It's really the only tasting menu that uses similar techniques as other Michelin Starred Restaurants. Im going to guess that if it was located in NYC or other big city, they would have gotten at least 1 star. The town of St. James, NY does not scream come visit me, Michelin Reviewer. As much as I would love to see them get recognized, part of me loves that they quietly keep producing unique menus consistently use the different ingredients at almost every service. You will not get the same dishes over and over like other restaurants produce.

In order to maintain that kind of culinary creativity, you have to love food and the chef and team pull magic and all the stops each time for Long Island's Top Restaurant
