Mt Mitchell Sunrise - Mount Mitchell State Park - Gorgeous NC Sunrise among the Clouds - NC Hikes
Mount Mitchell is the highest point east of the Mississippi River. Mount Mitchell's summit has an elevation of 6,684 feet. Mt Mitchell is located in the Black Mountain range of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina.
Mt Mitchell State Park is located 35 miles northeast of downtown Asheville, NC. The Mount Mitchell Observation Deck is only 1/4 mile from the parking area along a paved trail. The Mt Mitchell Observation Deck offers 360 degree panoramic views.
Be sure to bring a jacket, hat and even gloves to the summit! Temperatures are usually 10-30 degrees cooler than Asheville and weather conditions can change quickly. I did not have gloves and my hands were frozen while watching the Mt Mitchell sunrise in October!
Although my Mount Mitchell sunrise had some clouds blowing through it made for a magical sunrise. Most days (they say 8 out of 10 days) the summit is covered in clouds so be sure to check the weather before heading to the summit. On a clear day you can see as far as 85 miles!
The Mt Mitchell summit has a museum, gift shop and concession stand. (The Mount Mitchell restaurant was closed for renovations when I was there).
Mt. Mitchell is part of the Black Mountain range, formed more than a billion years ago. In 1835, Dr. Elisha Mitchell, a science professor at UNC-Chapel Hill, headed to the Black Mountains to measure their elevations.He measured the mountains' height using barometric altimeters. He determined the of elevation of Mt Michell was 6,672 ft. - only 12 feet from the actual elevation! In 1858, the highest peak in the Black Mountains was named after Dr. Mitchell. Mt Mitchell State Park was established in 1915 and was North Carolina's first State Park.

Mount Mitchell Trail | Strenuous 12-Mile Hike to Highest Peak in Eastern U.S. | North Carolina
In July, my daughter, Joella, and I hiked the tallest peak east of the Mississippi. We summitted Mount Mitchell, a peak in Western North Carolina contained within one of the nation’s first state parks. The hike starts in the Pisgah National Forests and ends within the Mount Mitchell State Park of North Carolina. Not only is Mount Mitchell the highest of all summits in the Eastern United States, it is the fifth most isolated peak in all of North America, almost 1200 miles from another peak of its size. It stands at 6,684 feet and provides great views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. Due to the high elevation and prominence, weather at the top can be severe. The average annual snowfall is 75 inches and winds of up 178 mph have been recorded there. Our late July day, however, brought beautiful, modest summer weather.

The top of Mt. Mitchell State Park and Driving Through the Fall Colors in Peak
Stay tuned to the end for a gorgeous drive through the fall mountains! We hike to the highest summit east of the Mississippi on top of Mt. Mitchell State Park. About Mt. Mitchell: The highest point east of the Mississippi at 6,684 Ft. and was one of the nation's first state parks. If you go, be sure to understand the temperature can be much colder than what you feel where you are. Take a jacket (don't be like me and forget it)! There is camping for 9 lucky folks only in the state park. I have another trail that we completed in the park coming up soon. The trails in this park are magical and mystic!
