Shaviyani Funadhoo is the capital island of Shaviyani Atoll.The island is located approximately 218 km from Capital Malé and has a domestic airport. Funadhoo is a fairly large island with a length of 3000m and a width of 585m at its widest point.
The lagoon area [locally known as Dhahfalhu] has become a mangrove habitat over the years. Dhahfalhu's southern part is locally known as Gabaa Kulhi, this part is mostly made of muddy clay, and its home for various wild life; including Mud crab, Truncated Mangrove Snail, Hermit crab, Mangrove crab, Grey heron, Great egret & many other migratory birds.

About Dr Abdulla Mausoom
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Dr Abdulla Mausoom as the new Minister of Tourism today (6th August 2020). Dr. Mausoom is not a new face to the industry. We decided to revisit the interview we had with him when he was filling the position as the General Manager of Sun Island Resort & Spa, Maldives by Villa Hotels & Resorts.
Mausoom holds a Doctorate Degree, conferred in 2004, by the School of Public Policy, University of Birmingham, UK. His doctoral thesis was on the interdependency and the relationship between the government and the private sector in sustainable tourism development. Mausoom did his MSc in Hotel Management at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland. He has spent over 10 years abroad for higher studies in England, Northern Ireland, Germany and Malaysia. Mausoom is a Council member of the Villa College Council.
Mausoom, the former Head of Maldives Tourism Promotion Board (2004 to 2007), was also the MP for Kelaa Constituency (2009-2014) and held Maldives Government’s Cabinet Portfolios as Minister of Tourism & Civil Aviation and Minister of Environment, Energy and Water. He served at both Tourism Promotion Advisory Council and College Council of Maldives as a Council Member and served as Board Member of the Board of Directors of State Trading Organization (STO), and Maldives Transport & Construction Company (MTCC). Mausoom has worked as a tourism industry consultant, trainer and lecturer for over 10 years and was involved in the development of 3rd Tourism Master Plan of the Maldives and is the lead author of the Ministry of Tourism’s 2008 publication “35 Years of Tourism”.
About the UNWTO Tourism Recovery Summit
On the occasion of the opening of the first UNWTO Regional Office in the Middle East in Riyahd, Saudi Arabia, the Tourism Recovery Summit will focus on the efforts to Restart Tourism with leadership and coordination. The Summit will be chaired by the Minister of Tourism of Saudi Arabia, His Excellency Ahmed Al Khateeb, and the UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili.

- It is really, really a great experience being here. And thank you very much, Saudi Arabia, for hosting this summit, you have given a very strong message to the world. And thanks UNWWTO for supporting us all the way, thank you. For Maldives, we have opened our tourism very early, in the very early days, and Maldives, our geography enables us to do that. And also we established very strong protocols, and we had total engagement from the whole community, whole health sector, whole government, with His Excellency the President, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih taking the helm of the total management of COVID, as well as the tourism. We had very good 2020. In fact, we won the World's Leading Destination award and CNN termed Maldives as the international success story for 2020. For now we are very much back in business. Many of our markets have recovered. We have surpassed 2019 figures for many of the Eastern European market and Indian market. So we are very much back.

Laamu Atoll is in the souther half of the Maldives. I am diving with Carpe Diem, on the Liveaboard Carpe Vita on a two week trip for myself. After the third dive, I decided to try a live feed with Youtube. We are located on the eastern side of the Atoll and now moving south near the airport where on group will be leaving tomorrow. Here to another week of diving.

It has been build with the financial cooperation of King Salman of Saudi Arabia.
