Interstate 5 or I-5 is the major highway on the west coast running from Mexico through California, Oregon, and Washington all the way to the Canadian border. Almost 800 of its total 1381 miles are in California, so it’s no surprise that there are lots of places worth a stop.
In this video, you’ll see the 14 best stops when driving Interstate 5, starting at the very south of the state.

I Must Be The First Tourist To Ever Visit This City...Mendota, California

ABOUT THIS VIDEO

In this 4K Cheap Rv Travel Adventure video, I do some exploration of a rather obscure, but fascinating, Central Valley California city, Mendota. Life looks hard here; the town has a dark history; English is rarely spoken. Although it is known as the cantaloupe capital of the world, its more important history has to do with ground water contamination. In the mid -1990's, some residents were stricken with higher rates of cancer. Others had children born with birth defects. This occurrence touched off a firestorm of controversy. What had decade after decade of fertilizers and pesticides done? Was Mendota's groundwater fit to drink? It was not, and chemical pollution was to blame. The State of California spent many millions of dollars to remediate the water. Still, most won't drink it. I know I wouldn't. Pesticide and fertilizer use has created problems that will almost certainly continue to impact the water supplies of many California Central Valley towns and cities.

ME & MY TRAVEL VAN, LITTLE RASCAL

I am a transgender gal living in Northern California, and I have developed a passion for travel, especially cheap travel. Living in a small van allows me to travel very economically. I save quite a bit of money not having to stay in hotels. In addition, my van gets great gas mileage so California's high gas prices are not too much of a concern. I do my travels in a 2016 Ram Promaster City Van, Little Rascal, a vehicle I am gradually fitting out for comfortable travels and boondocking.

MY RV BACKGROUND: WHAT I OWNED

This is my third travel recreational vehicle. I previously owned a 1974 GMC motorhome, a 1988 Coachman class B camper van, and my current van, a 2017 Ram Promaster City. I named it Little Rascal because It is small, like me. I purchased it used, in mid 2017, with 20,000 miles on it to support my travels and adventures on YouTube. I did some initial remodeling in September 2017, then used it for short, overnight, travels. With my friend, in the late winter of 2017, we traveled over 7,600 miles back and forth across the US in the van. In the summer of 2019 I traveled to the Upper Midwest, Canada, and Mexico, gaining additional experience and learning more about van life and living as a nomad. I deemed the van not comfortable enough for boondocking, though, and used cheap hotels. As time went by I picked up many tips from RV guru Bob Wells and his YouTube channel, CheapRvliving, on how to live simply and comfortably in small spaces. I recommend his YouTube channel if you think the nomad life is appealing.

Want to support my travels and adventures on YouTube? It's never required or expected, but always very appreciated!

Mercey Hot Springs

Mercey Hot Springs (formerly, Mercy Hot Springs) is an unincorporated community in the Panoche Valley of Fresno County, central California, about 60 miles west-southwest of Fresno. It is a resort along Little Panoche Road (Fresno County Road J1) located at the western edge of Fresno County.

Located in the Panoche Valley, the facility includes a campground and natural hot springs. It lies at an elevation of 1,161 ft.

The springs were discovered in 1848 and the resort opened after 1900.The name is in honor of J.N. Mercy, an early stockman.

I took the opportunity to fly over and video the springs. I was careful to fly around (not over) the facility and stay high enough that I wouldn't capture any people that would be recognizable. My attempt to preserve their privacy.

Our Stargazing Trip at Firebaugh, CA (9-21-2016)

In this video, it shows our stargazing outing/adventure to Firebaugh, CA. I was with my cousin, Loraine and Ian.

How our day went down:
Our outing officially started around 3 p.m. This was when I was picking up Ian and Loraine, then my cousin next. Originally, I wanted to stargaze with only my cousin but I wanted to invite the whole gang last minute (like the day prior). Thankfully, my dad fixed the radiator of my car so I 'guess' it's good to drive long distance with it once again lol. We first stopped at Tracy, CA to eat dinner at the Black Bear Diner. By the way, the traffic was ridiculous along the way! After eating our dinner (and giving my feet a break), we headed south along Interstate 5 to head to the dark, isolated stargazing spot I found on Google maps. It was along Little Panoche Rd, just west of I-5. The experience of heading out into the middle of nowhere with my gang and all you can see are stars and the Milky Way for light was priceless. Despite the windy, chilly conditions, we had a blast. We headed back home by 11 p.m. or so. By the way, we got a bit hungry after all the excitement, so to end the evening, we ate our late dinner at the China Palace Restaurant in Milpitas. This restaurant doesn't close until 3 a.m. This was probably the biggest trip done with the TRIO+Ian so far. It was exhausting! Until next time, safe travels! Thanks for tagging along guys!

(Outing taken place Wednesday evening, September 21, 2016)

Cypress Mountain Drive | Paso Robles, California [Off The Beaten Track Episode 12]

We explore Cypress Mountain Drive near Paso Robles, California!

This 6.7-mile dirt road runs from Klau Mine Road at the northern end to Santa Rosa Creek Road at the southern end. To the best of our knowledge, this is a county-maintained road running through a mix of private land and BLM land.

For interactive maps and GPX files visit:

For all tracks in the series:

The adjacent areas to the northern section are part of an EPA 'Superfund' site due to extensive Mercury mining at the Klau Mine and Buena Vista Mine from 1868 to 1970. This caused the release of Mercury compounds and Acid Mine Drainage into the water table, impacting Las Tablas Creek and Lake Nacimiento, making the entire area a Superfund site. No public access is permitted to either mine.

Mercury levels in the lake are deemed safe for human swimming and recreation, but there is an advisory against eating fish from the lake as fish are more susceptible to accumulating Mercury compounds in their system.

Cleanup work is ongoing, the vast majority of the mine buildings (on both sites) have been demolished and removed, and some removal and containment of tainted soils has already occurred.

Here is a link to the EPA site:

Both mines (which I think were connected underground) are now off-limits to the general public. Driving through the area is safe, as evidenced by the several residential properties dotted along the road.

Speaking of the road, it is a short but scenic drive! It is mostly gravel, with a reasonably steep ascent to the 2,200 ft summit. The road is signed 'ROAD CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC', but those signs do not appear to change seasonally and we encountered no hard closed barrier, nor was the road impassable in any way. Proceed at your own risk, but judging by the tire tracks plenty of vehicles travel this road.

We drove north to south, the ascent to the summit (2,200 ft) is fairly steep coming in this direction, and the road was very narrow in places. We kept an eye out for passing spots in case we encountered an oncoming vehicle (we didn't). It's also used by cyclists at times, be prepared to share the road!

The camping situation is unknown (comment below if you have any info). There is a location called Firebaugh 7X Ranch Camping at about the halfway point, but it is not clear whether this is available for booking by the public, or if it is a private campsite. Their published phone number is 805-238-1500. Let us know if you find out any more info! As noted, there are several BLM plots nearby, we don't know if camping is allowed and would suggest contacting the Bakersfield BLM Office (who administer this region for some reason):

Old Mission Santa Ines was founded in 1804 and is the 19th of 21 California missions established by the Franciscan Fathers. It's located in Solvang, California, which is a town near Santa Barbara which was settled by Danish immigrants in 1911. The town grew outwards from the mission. My Storm Chasing Trip In The Central Valley (3-28-2022) Video Part 10

Enjoying these Midwest-like skies! This was around the outskirts of Madera, CA. I was trying to chase what was left of some thunderstorms that had formed around the Fresno area late this afternoon. This was during my storm chasing adventure in the Central Valley on Monday, March 28, 2022… I left from work just before noon. Traffic was pretty light on the way to the valley. I stopped and ate lunch (and rested) at the John Chuck Erreca Rest Area just off of I-5. Then storms started firing around the valley, so I then drove north towards Los Banos, Santa Nella and Gustine, CA. But even ‘stronger’ storms went off to the southeast near Firebaugh. I raced back south and that’s when I finally saw some action. A few lightning strikes (and decent rumbles of thunder) were observed while in the northern outskirts of Firebaugh. Some interesting Midwest-like skies were seen as well. Then late afternoon came and I headed towards Madera and Fresno to hopefully see the t-storms firing there. Unluckily I was too late for the lightning, although some epic skies were still seen. I then refueled around Fresno at the Valero on E Shaw Ave. I then called it a day and tackled the long road back home, taking in the sunset and lingering showers along the way. It was certainly a good weather day! Ultimately, calling off work half day this day was worth it! ‘Til next time, safe travels!

*Weather scenario: A strong, cold, upper-level low-pressure area had dropped down along the California coast. The storm had brought significant rain, wind and even triggered numerous thunderstorms to the state this day. The high angle sun this time of year had also helped with the unstable air mass to help fuel afternoon t-storm development especially in the valley. Certainly, this storm system was the most significant and eventful one we’ve had since early January… But it was still not enough to make a dent in our ongoing severe drought… Pray for more rain and storms!

Shahdad Kaloots (Kalut) In Kerman With Pasargad Travel Agency

Where is the warmest spot on earth? For sure this question may have come to your mind for several times, this region of course placed in Kerman province in Iran. It’s the region that it’s remembered as a place for exciting entertainments like; safari, desert tour, camel ridding and scientific research.

Shahdad Kaloots , the warmest spot on the earth, Kerman
If we want to describe this place we can say it’s a calm and silent place which is hidden among colorful sands. In this article of Travital we’re going to speak about a unique attraction in order you have a general view before traveling to Iran.
Shahdad Kaloots in Kerman is known as a unique attraction in Iran and there’s a example of that in united states in Utah region the spectacular view of Shahdad Kaloots attracts many domestic and foreign tourists every year.

The considerable point here is that here has the highest temperature in the world and it’s the warmest spot on earth, some parts of Loot desert is also put in list of UNESCO world’s heritage.
What does Kaloot mean?
In fact Kaloot (or Kalut) is a kind of natural phenomenon which is created by water and wind erosion. It is some prominence shaped like monuments naturally and without any human intervention. In top of these prominence there’s a flat surface and there’s a ramp on the windward side. Theses shapes usually have formed in result of lake’s erosion in old past years. Some also argue that Kaloot consists of two words “Kal” with meaning of “village” and “Loot”, the name of this desert.

Shahdad Kaloots in Kerman are formed in an area of 4,000 square kilometers and formed about 20,000 years ago due to wind and water erosion. They are stretched from north to south and have 145 kilometers length and 70 kilometers wide
How Shahdad Kaloots have shaped?
The main reason in order to shape Kaloots is wind and water. The 120 days winds which blow from Sistan-Baluchistan and also rain falls in this region have caused these Kaloots shape.

According to some experts, The Shoor River have the most impact on these Kaloots, which also flows into the driest parts of Iran, keeping Kaloot walls moist in Shahdad region of Kerman. The Shoor River is the only permanent river in heart of the Loot Desert and it originates from the northern mountains in Birjand. The river’s salty water is not unexpected because it passes through the desert and solves many salts and minerals.
