Walking in St. John's, Antigua - What to do on Your Day in Port

This is a quick video of our walk through the port of St. John's, Antigua. We were on a 7 day Southern Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas. Antigua is a beautiful island. In this video we walk up to St. John's Cathedral also known as the St. John the Divine, the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba. It is an Anglican church perched on a hilltop in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda. The present cathedral with its imposing white twin towers was built on a fossilized reef, in 1845, and is now in its third incarnation, as earthquakes in 1683 and in 1745 destroyed the previous structures. The iron gates on the south face of the church are flanked by pillars displaying lead Biblical figures of St John the Divine and St John the Baptist. They were taken by HMS Temple in 1756, from a French ship destined for Martinique.

Antigua is one of the 2 major islands that make up the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. Ringed with coral reefs, the island is known for its many sandy beaches. Set along English Harbour, restored Nelson’s Dockyard, which Admiral Horatio Nelson made his base in the 1780s, includes a marina and the Dockyard Museum. Trails lead up to Shirley Heights, a former military lookout with panoramic views.

In 1620, Ralph Merifield and Sir Thomas Warner received from King James I, a Royal Patent to colonize the Leeward Islands, but with overall authority through James Hay, 1st Earl of Carlisle. Merifield and Warner formed the company Merwars Hope, which was renamed Society of Adventurers, which merged into the Royal African Company in 1664. Warner arrived on St. Kitts on 28 January 1623 (O.S.; 7 February 1624 N.S.) with 15 settlers and came to terms with the Carib Chief Ouboutou Tegremante. Three Frenchmen were already on the island, either Huguenot refugees, pirates, or castaways. The Hurricane of September 1623 wiped out their tobacco and vegetable crop, yet the colony survived and grew. Hopewell arrived in 1624, and included Warner's friend Colonel John Jaeffreson, who built Wingfield Manor. This Jaeffreson may have been an ancestor of Thomas Jefferson's.[1]: 14–16 [3]

In 1625, a French captain, Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc, arrived on St. Kitts aboard his 14-gun brigantine and a crew of 40. He had escaped a three-hour battle with a 35-gun Spanish warship near the Cayman Islands. In 1627, Warner and d'Esnambuc split the island in four quarters, with the English controlling the middle half and the French the end quarters. Cardinal Richelieu formed the Compagnie de Saint-Christophe in 1626, and 40 slaves were purchased from Senegal. By 1635, the number of slaves on St. Kitts had grown to 500–600, and by 1665 the French West India Company replaced the Compagnie.[1]: 21–22

As the European population on Saint Kitts continued to increase, Chief Tegremond grew hostile to the foreigners in 1626, and plotted their elimination with the help of other Island Caribs. However, a native woman named Barbe informed Warner and d'Esnambuc of the plot and they decided to take action. The Europeans acted by getting the Indians intoxicated at a party before returning to their village, where 120 were killed in their sleep. The following day, at a site now called Bloody Point, with a ravine known as Bloody River, over 2,000 Caribs were massacred. By 1640, the remaining Caribs not enslaved on St. Kitts, Nevis, and Antigua, were removed to Dominica.[1]: 17–18

In 1628, Warner allowed Anthony Hilton to settle Nevis, along with 80 others from St. Kitts. Hilton had recently escaped murder by his indentured servant, and decided to sell his St. Kitts' plantation. Hilton's 80 were joined by 100 other settlers, originally bound for Barbuda.[2]: 40–41

The 1629 English colonization was led by George Donne.[4] Both powers then proceeded to colonise neighbouring islands from their bases. The English settled Nevis (1628), Antigua (1632), Montserrat (1632) and later Anguilla (1650) and Tortola (1672). The French colonised Martinique (1635), the Guadeloupe archipelago (1635), St Martin (1648), St Barths (1648), and Saint Croix (1650).

Saint Kitts and Nevis suffered heavily from a Spanish raid in 1629, led by Fadrique de Toledo, 1st Marquis of Villanueva de Valdueza. All settlements were destroyed, nine hostages taken back to Spain, and 600 men taken to work the mines in Spanish America. Four ships were supposed to carry the rest back to England, but they returned to the islands soon after the Spanish departed. This was the only Spanish attempt to keep the English and French out of the Leeward Islands.[1]: 19–23

During the Battle of the Fig Tree in 1635, the French forcefully removed English settlers who had encroached into the French portion of St. Kitts. The French used 250 armed slaves in the conflict.[1]: 34

The islands' earliest cash crop was tobacco, along with ginger and indigo dye. However, production from the Caribbean and North American colonies deflated the price resulting in an 18-month moratorium on St. Kitts tobacco farming in 1639. This prompted the production of sugar from sugar cane on St. Kitts in 1643, and on Nevis in 1648. Windmills were built to crush the canes and extract the juice. mapa de San Cristóbal y Nieves #stkitts,#nevis

St Kitts And Nevis

Website Booking :

St. Kitts and Nevis are mountainous siblings representing two sides of one handsome coin, and sharing a St. Kitts-based government.

Nevis, the smaller of the two, boasts important historic sights: Nevis is the birthplace of American statesman Alexander Hamilton, and his former home is now a museum; Great Britain's famed naval hero Admiral Horatio Nelson met and married Nevisian Fanny Brice here in 1787, and their marriage license is recorded at Fig Tree Church. Visitors partake in watersports on Pinney's Beach (home of the Four Seasons) and Oualie Beach, plus there's mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, diving and snorkeling trips. The local botanical garden contains one of the largest collections of palms in the region, and the Four Seasons golf course and tennis facilities are among the Caribbean's finest. Liming -- relaxing -- at the various beach bars is worth a few lazy afternoons, while evenings are best spent on gourmet dining.

The history is no less rich on St. Kitts, which Christopher Columbus named St. Christopher after the patron saint of travelers, and the appellation was eventually shortened to St. Kitts. Nine forts guarded the island's coastline, none more impressive than the massive Brimstone Hill Fortress; it is a wonderfully preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site today and well worth exploration. For beaches and watersports, head south to Frigate Bay, where most of the hotel rooms are located, or just beyond, to the Southeast Peninsula, where the island's best white-sand coves ring the peninsula's rolling hills and salt ponds. Watch for green vervet monkeys scampering across the road, dodging into bushes or looking for a handout at Turtle Beach
AIRPORTS/GATEWAYS/FLYING TIMES: Airports: The Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport in St. Kitts is less than 2 miles from downtown Basseterre and Newcastle Airport in Nevis is approximately 6 miles outside Charlestown. Gateways/Flying Times: Transfers through Antigua, Miami, Philadelphia, London Gatwick, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Flight times from Miami-3 hours, Charlotte-4 hours, London-8 hours, Antigua-20 minutes, San Juan, Puerto Rico- 1hour, St. Maarten-20 minutes.

CLIMATE: Temperature High/Low Summer 90/76 degrees F. Winter 84/72 degrees F. Average humidity is 71.5%. Annual rainfall averages 55 inches. Approximate sunrise 0530, sunset 1830.

DINING: Food aficionados will find a wonderful range of cuisines to select from available at various restaurants, both individually operated and found within the island's hotels or inns. Local delicacies with a distinctly Caribbean flair dominate most menus, yet Continental, vegetarian, Italian and other styles can also be found on St. Kitts. Tipping is discretionary at 10-15%. Dress code varies depending on the establishment.

NIGHTLIFE: Entertainment available includes-Live local and international entertainment. Conventional Clubs. Beach Bars/Club. Casino. Sports bars. Dinner/dances. Cinema.

LANGUAGE: English.

SIGHTSEEING: The historic capital city of Basseterre offers sites including Independence Square, Berkley Memorial, St. George's Anglican Church, St. Barnabus Anglican Church, the Georgian House, the National Museum, the Cenotaph (war memorial), Government House and the Port Zante cruise terminal. Other top tourist draws on island are Brimstone Hill (the only manmade UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Eastern Caribbean), Black Rocks, Bloody Point, Old Road Town, Carib Indian Petroglyphs, Romney Manor and the Caribelle Batik Factory, Belmont Estate, the St. Kitts Scenic Railway, tropical rainforest and extinct volcano Mt. Liamuiga.

The Adventures of Ronnie and Dr. Sheba in St. Kitts & Nevis

Follow our journey as we try to visit 100 countries around the world at:

Saint Kitts and Nevis is a dual-island nation situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. It’s known for cloud-shrouded mountains and beaches. Many of its former sugar plantations are now inns or atmospheric ruins. The larger of the 2 islands, Saint Kitts, is dominated by the dormant Mount Liamuiga volcano, home to a crater lake, green vervet monkeys and rain-forest crisscrossed with hiking trails.

We visited the largest of the 2 islands, St. Kitts, in May 2018 and stayed at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino. We explored Basseterre, Independence Square, Berkeley Memorial, the Anglican Church and the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. In addition, we visited the Brimstone Hill Fortress and National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Cockleshell Bay, Frigate Bay, Vibes Beach Bar, Romney Manor and Caribelle Batik.

Do you ever wonder how Caribbean Countries got their names? The origin of a country’s name can tell a lot about the country’s identity, culture, and history and it is even more interesting how the names of countries evolved over the years as these names were twisted, contorted, translated, and misconstrued. Lands were conquered, handed over, and repopulated. In Part 2 of this series, watch How These 11 Caribbean Territories & Departments Got Their Names (Part 2)

ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA (4K Country Tour) Stunning Aerial/Walking Tour/Night/Day 4K Footage

ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA (4K Country Tour) features stunning and spectacular aerial, walking, and drone video footage shot in the day, great for travel, visit, vacation, and tourism planning set to original music. Antigua and Barbuda is a sovereign island country in the West Indies in the Americas, lying between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It consists of two major islands, Antigua and Barbuda separated by 63 km (39 mi), and smaller islands (including Great Bird, Green, Guiana, Long, Maiden, Prickly Pear, York Islands, Redonda). The permanent population number is about 97,120 (2019 est.), with 97% being resident on Antigua. The capital and largest port and city is St. John's on Antigua, with Codrington being the largest town on Barbuda. Lying near each other, Antigua and Barbuda are in the middle of the Leeward Islands, part of the Lesser Antilles, roughly at 17°N of the equator.

The island of Antigua was explored by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and named for the Church of Santa María La Antigua. Antigua was colonized by Britain in 1632; Barbuda island was first colonised in 1678. Having been part of the Federal Colony of the Leeward Islands from 1871, Antigua and Barbuda joined the West Indies Federation in 1958. With the breakup of the federation, it became one of the West Indies Associated States in 1967. Following self-governance in its internal affairs, independence was granted from the United Kingdom on 1 November 1981. Antigua and Barbuda is a member of the Commonwealth and Elizabeth II is the country's queen and head of state.

The economy of Antigua and Barbuda is particularly dependent on tourism, which accounts for 80% of GDP. Like other island nations, Antigua and Barbuda are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, such as sea level rise, and increased intensity of extreme weather like hurricanes, which have direct impacts on the island through coastal erosion, water scarcity, and other challenges. As of 2019, Antigua and Barbuda has a 0% individual income tax rate, as does neighboring St. Kitts and Nevis.
