Driving the Highest Paved Road in North America - The Mt. Evans Scenic Byway
Just a short drive from Denver, CO is the Mt. Evans Scenic Byway, which climbs to 14,130 feet, making it the highest paved road in North America. The road is open seasonally, and goes through five different climate zones on its way to the top of Mt. Evans.
Note: As of September 2023 the mountain has been renamed Mt. Blue Sky.
Along the way, the road visits the Mt. Goliath Nature Center, Summit Lake Park (the highest city park in the United States), and the top of Mt. Evans (almost), where you'll find the ruins of the Crest House, once the highest business in the country.
We also see some of the wildlife found in the Rocky Mountains on this trip, including deer, pika, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats.
This video was filmed in August 2022 and despite it still being summer, we also got to experience some mountain weather.

The Mount Evans Scenic Byway, Colorado
The Mount Evans Scenic Byway, just 60 miles west of Denver, is the highest paved road in North America. If you came to Denver to experience the Rocky Mountains, you'll want to reserve a day to take a drive up to Mount Evans. In this instance, it isn't the destination that travelers rave about – it's the journey. To get to Mount Evans, you'll have to hop on the Mount Evans Scenic Byway, a two-lane road known as the road into the sky because of the nearly 9,000 feet of elevation change. At the Mount Evans peak, drivers will be 14,264 feet above sea level. Along the way, you'll find a number of lookout points from which you can admire the view of the Rockies.
We recommend taking it slow during drive on mount evans and admiring the scenery, especially around Echo Lake Park. Located about halfway between Idaho Springs and the top of Mount Evans, Echo Lake boasts excellent fishing conditions, as well as picnic facilities and hiking trails. You can also stop by the Denver Botanic Gardens' Mount Goliath location, just beyond Echo Lake. But the views aren't the only reason to take your time along the Mount Evans Scenic Byway. We caution to drive carefully and slowly since there are steep drop-offs; they also recommend dressing in layers as the temperatures fluctuate depending on the elevation.

We are Jed and Sandy Hall, the creators of Wanderful Revolution. Jed was born in a small town on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Sandy was born and raised in Maryland. We met in Washington State, while serving our country in the United States Navy. After separating from military service, we both went back to school and became nurses, which ultimately led to us selling our home in 2015 and hitting the road as travel nurses working in Emergency Departments throughout the USA.
During our travels, we lived in an Airstream travel trailer and made it our goal to become debt free. At the beginning of 2020, we paid off the last of our debts and quit our jobs so we could follow our long time dream of traveling the world. Of course, COVID-19 brought us to a screeching halt. So, we decided to build out a 2019 Mercedes Sprinter van, which we plan to drive on one of the longest road trips in the world: the Pan-American highway from Alaska to the tip Argentina (and possibly beyond).
We are excited and very fortunate to be able to live this amazing lifestyle! So, we want to share it with you! Join us to check out some amazing places, go on exciting adventures, eat delicious food, and perhaps learn some tips and tricks about living full-time in a van. Mount Evans is the highest paved road in North America, and there’s no better way to see it than aboard a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Being one of 26 Scenic Byways in Colorado, the Mount Evans Scenic Byway just might be the most dangerous high altitude roadway in the state, with steep drop-offs and deteriorating road conditions above the treeline. The road reaches 14,130 feet above sea level at the summit, making it a bucket list ride for any motorcyclist! Colorado and the Rocky Mountains are filled with amazing motorcycle rides, but no motorcycle trip to the state is complete without a ride to the top of the world. For those faint of heart or who aren’t able to enter the fee area of the road, riding Squaw Pass from Bergen Park to Idaho Springs offers great views of the Continental Divide, and is one of my favorite motorcycle rides near Denver.
We’ll also check out Tommyknocker Brewery in Idaho Springs, one of my favorite places to take a day ride out of Denver in the Summer months.

Evans is a census-designated place (CDP) in Columbia County, Georgia, United States. It is a suburb of Augusta and is part of the Augusta metropolitan area. The population was 29,011 at the 2010 census,[4] up from 17,727 at the 2000 census.
Evans, possibly named after Confederate General Clement A. Evans,[5] is the de facto county seat of Columbia County, although Appling still holds the de jure designation.[5] The Columbia County Government Center, the Government Complex Addition, and the Columbia County Courthouse Annex are all located in Evans.[5] In 2020, Evans, Georgia was named the nation’s top place to live by Money Magazine.[6]
