Trip to Erlian (China's border city)
Buddha's Palm, Erenhot city China
Buddha's Palm (佛掌印) is a natural rock formation located in the grasslands near Erenhot city, which is a county-level city in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China.
The rock formation is said to resemble the shape of a Buddha's hand with its fingers spread out, hence the name Buddha's Palm. The site has become a popular tourist destination and is known for its scenic beauty and spiritual significance.
Visitors to the site can hike around the grasslands, view the rock formation from different angles, and take photos with it. The area around the rock formation is also home to many nomadic herders and their grazing livestock, providing a unique opportunity to experience traditional Mongolian culture.

About 200 dinosaurs in the fields, 10km before arriving in Erlian on a bus from Jining / Ulanqab in August 2011.
Getting to Mongolia from China on a Budget
Getting to Mongolia on a Budget isn't as big an issue as many might imagine. Most people get to Mongolia from China on an expensive train from Beijing, that train costs about $250. However, there is a cheap alternative to getting to Mongolia from China without breaking your bank.
Step 1. Get to Erlian (二连): This is the border town on the Chinese side. You need to get here to do the border crossing. You can come via Beijing (北京) (8hrs) or Hohhot (呼和浩特) (7hrs).
Step 2. Spend the night in Erlian (optional): Most travellers opt to spent the night here in town so they can hit the border crossing into Mongolia first thing in the morning and ensure they can catch the train to Ulaanbaatar that often fills up.
Step 3. Cross the border: It's a pain to cross the border, but you do have 3 options. The train is the easiest way, but only leaves from Erlian to Zamiin Uud a couple days a week. It also only leaves in the afternoon which makes it more tricky to catch the night train to Ulaanbaatar. Your second option is to take a bus from the bus station to Zamiin Uud, which is the Mongolian border town. The problem with this, is not only do you have to deal with the shit border proceedings, the bus only leaves a couple times a day in the afternoon. The most popular option is to catch a jeep. You can catch jeeps at Dinosaur Square in Erlian. They should cost between 70-100 Yuan per person. The crossing is a pain in the ass, but if you get to Dinosaur square around 8am, you should be in Mongolia by noon at the latest and get a ticket on the train that night.
Step 4. Get to Ulaanbaatar: You can catch either a bus, private car, or the train (which has sleeper cars) to UB. The train is comfortable and takes between 12-14 hours.

In this Part we travel from Erlian to Beijing that is about 842 km ( 523 miles ) (ca. 16 hours) it was a very nice trip by train. and finally we saw the chinese wall for the first time. and in Beijing we were personally picked up from the platform and brought to our
Hotel Dong Fang. and that evening we went to a performance of Star dreams.
This trip goes from Moscow to Beijing through Listvianka, Irkoetsk and Ulaan baatar in Mongolia by train. a trip that I made with Peter in May & June 2010. This trip contains about 32 movies that I'm going to make. and the trip duration was 6 weeks. and more than 9,000 kilometers long.
From Beijing we traveled to Xian from Yichang on a yangtze river cruise. and stopped at the Three Gorges Dam, Fengdu Ghost City, Chengdu and from 4 days ending in Chongqing. where we traveled to Guilin and Yangshuo. to finish in Hong Kong. a monster journey that I will never forget. Love it ...miss it

Мы тоже не знали, пока не приехали в этот небольшой, даже по китайским меркам, город. А когда приехали, то увидели огромное количество динозавров. Недалеко даже целый парк есть. А все потому, что в окрестностях как с китайской, так и с монгольской стороны нашли много костей этих древних животных. Вот местные недолго думая и решили сделать их своим символом. В видео коротко о том, как мы подружились с динозаврами.

China Inner Mongolia Erenhot Trans Mongolian Train Change Gauge
For the train geeks out there. This is a video, taken as a passenger onboard a train while the train change gauge.
The Chinese trains use 1,435 mm standard gauge, but the Mongolian trains run on Russian gauge which is 1,520mm. So when a train travels from China to Mongolia (or vice versa), the train carriages need to be lifted up by special machines while the bogies (The bottom part of the train) are changed.
The whole process is so stable that you can easily drink a cup of hot tea while experiencing this surreal process.
It's a shame it was freezing outside and I was only passing through. Erenhot was the first place in Asia where dinosaur skeleton and eggs were discovered. There is a dinosaur museum in town which I'm sure will be a very interesting place to visit.
