What are the most miserable towns in the United Kingdom? Many of the towns in the United Kingdom are not doing too badly in terms of basic amenities. The quality of life in those towns is higher even than in places recognized as cities in other countries. Still, it can’t be said that all those towns are having it equally. Assessing the standard of living and quality of life in the UK as a whole, we can describe certain towns in the United Kingdom as miserable. Granted, those towns are not inherently terrible. Yet, the situation there is not acceptable in the light of what we see in other villages, towns, and cities, in the UK. In this video, we shall be discussing the 10 most miserable towns in the UK.
10. Cumbernauld, Scotland
We will start our discussion with a town in Scotland. To give you a hint; this is the first of the three Scottish towns on this list of the 10 most miserable towns in the UK. We are talking about Cumbernauld, a large town in North Lanarkshire with an area of 8.3 square miles or 21.5 square kilometers. Under normal circumstances, it should be a city because of its city-like huge population of 51,000.
It has not shed that horrible description as “Scotland’s most dismal town.” Truly speaking, this town is lacking in anything of the good things you would find in Glasgow or Edinburgh. The center of Cumbernauld has been described as the “Kabul of the North.” This says it all. Whatever you know about Kabul has its miniature in this miserable town.
9. Grimsby, England
The first of the 5 cities in England on this list is Grimsby. Maybe we should stop calling it Great Grimsby. If it were great indeed, this port town and the North East Lincolnshire administrative center on the south bank of the Humber Estuary would have all amenities that would make it rank among the best. But the comments from its residents and one-time visitors indicated that life is miserable in this place that has been voted several times as one of the worst places to live in England.
Therefore, the town of around 100,000 residents is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. Its entire area of 88 square miles (or 230 square kilometers) has been ranked the 18th worst place to live a while ago.
8. Airdrie, Scotland
Back in Scotland; we are now examining Airdrie, a town in North Lanarkshire. It also is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. The town on a plateau with an elevation of 400 feet or 130 meters above sea level is about 12 miles (or 19 kilometers) east of Glasgow city center. During its industrial heyday in the 19th century, coal mining and cotton milling were the major industries, no one could then think of this former industrial town as miserable.
However, the exit of those industries has made life there miserable to extent of being branded the most dismal town in the UK. The PR manager for the town admits it deserves its grim reputation as the worst in Scotland. The town is boring and the buildings are ugly.

Visiting All Manchester Metrolink Tram Stops
There are 99 stops on the Manchester Metrolink network stretching out as far as Bury and Rochdale, as well as running through the heart of Manchester. But how long does it take to travel the entire system? So I asked my local 'Northern Correspondent' to accompany me on the trip of doing just that - riding the entire tram network!
Note: We got a taxi between Manchester Airport/Altrincham, and again between Trafford Centre/Eccles - if you were doing this using 'pure' Tube Challenge rules, you would stick to public transport only - i.e. use buses to make those connections .... which wouldn't be as fast.

What are the most depressing cities to live in the UK? The United Kingdom is one the best countries in the world anyone can live in at this time. But it’s not all of the UK cities that are great for living. While speaking with residents of some cities in the country, you’ll discover that it can be depressing in some of the most miserable cities to live in the UK. At a glance, those depressing cities aren’t bad in themselves. But when you consider the living condition of those cities in the light of statistics, you would respect those living there. This video will spotlight the 3 most depressing cities to live in the UK. It’ll interest you to note that all of those cities are in England.
3. Birmingham
About Birmingham
I guess you know enough about Birmingham to be quick to agree that it can be a depressing city in the United Kingdom. You do know that it is the one of the largest city in the UK. Another thing not often mentioned about Birmingham is that about 40% of its population are under 25 years of age making it one of the youngest metropolises and cities in Europe. The natives and residents of the city are called Brummies. It is a multicultural city by nature with its distinctive accent, history, traditions.
The good side of Birmingham
One thing people would quickly remember about Birmingham is its canals and their lengths. They have canals longer canals than Venice which are so intricate. They date back to the Industrial Revolution. Additionally, the industrial steam engine was invented in this city. This steam engine is perhaps the most important invention in British history. One more good side of Birmingham is its many parks. Having over 500 of them, Birmingham has more parks than many European cities. Then comes the food. Foods such as bird’s Custard, Bournville drinking chocolate, Cadbury chocolate, HP Sauce, and Typhoo tea all have their home in Birmingham.
Why Birmingham is depressing
Birmingham is added to this list of the most depressing cities to live in the UK because it lives far below expectations as a home. Well, I will not tell you much about this city beyond what Brummies say about their city. About two-thirds of residents in the city believe that living in Birmingham makes them miserable. About half of them describe their home as “bleak”, “boring”, or “miserable.” In another poll, it was voted “the most boring city”. Nearly one in three drivers on many roads in the city don’t have an insurance policy. If you’re a commuter who drives, this is the worst city for you. What about homelessness? As many as 20,000 people in Birmingham are homeless, sleeping outside during the dead cold night. They are either jobless, unprofitably employed, or bankrupt.
Now, what do you conclude about Birmingham? I guess I can hear you saying, it’s certainly one of the most depressing cities to live in the UK. If that is the case, you will be given the privilege of ranking it, if you think it shouldn’t be among the 3 most depressing cities.

Our second of the 3 most depressing cities to live in in the UK is none other than Kingston upon Hull, usually abbreviated as Hull. It is a city in Yorkshire. This unitary authority in the East Riding of Yorkshire is 25 miles inland from the North Sea, 34 miles southeast of York, 50 miles east of Leeds, and 54 miles northeast of Sheffield. In the entire region of Yorkshire and Humber, it is the fourth-largest city and also the most miserable city to live in. But that is not all there is to know about the city of Hull.

Urmston is a town in Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, with a population of 41,825 at the 2011 Census. Historically in Lancashire, it is about six miles southwest of Manchester city centre. The southern boundary is the River Mersey, with Stretford lying to the east and Flixton to the west. Davyhulme lies to the north of the town centre. Urmston covers an area of 4,799 acres (19 km²).
The town has early medieval origins, and until the arrival of the railway in 1873 was a small farming community. The railway acted as a catalyst, transforming the town into a residence for the middle classes. Today, Urmston is one of the major urban areas in Trafford: it includes the areas of Davyhulme and Flixton.
In 1983, during an excavation by South Trafford Archaeological Group, fragments of Roman pottery were found in the area now occupied by the cemetery – previously the site of Urmston Old Hall – suggesting that there may have been a Roman settlement on the site. In the early 13th century, Lord Greenhalgh and his family lived at Highfield House (under what is now the M60 motorway).
The Manor of Urmston was rented by a family using the local surname. The earliest known member of the Urmston family is Richard de Urmston, who was recorded in 1193–94 as giving 40 shillings for having the king's good will. Orme Fitz Seward's land passed to Richard de Trafford in the 13th century. The de Trafford family later lost the land, but won it back as the result of a duel.
Urmston Old Hall was the home of the manorial lord, and a centre of power in the area during the Middle Ages. The Old Hall was completely rebuilt in brick and timber in the late 16th century. New Croft Hall, also in Urmston, was the residence of a wealthy freeman and may have been moated. Urmston was only one of three manors in Trafford to have had two medieval halls, the others being Hale and Timperley. Neither of the halls has survived to the present day.
Urmston occupies an area of 7.5 square miles (19.4 km2), at 53°26′55″N 2°22′29″W (53.4487, −2.3747); it is approximately 137 feet (42 m) above sea level at its highest point. The land is relatively flat, sloping gently from north to south. Urmston's climate is generally temperate, with few extremes of temperature or weather. The mean temperature is slightly above average for the United Kingdom. Annual rainfall and average amount of sunshine are both slightly below the average for the UK.
Junctions 9 and 10 of the M60 orbital motorway connect Urmston to the rest of Greater Manchester and the motorway network. A junction previously existed further east along the motorway under its old M63 designation, but was closed on the opening of the A6144(M) in 1987. A well known local landmark, opened in 1960, is the Barton High level motorway bridge, which crosses the Manchester Ship Canal.
Urmston is connected to Liverpool and Manchester by the Cheshire Lines Committee railway line which passes through Warrington and Liverpool South Parkway (for Liverpool John Lennon Airport). There are three railway stations in the Urmston area (Urmston station in Urmston town centre, Chassen Road and Flixton stations in neighbouring Flixton). Trains stopping at these stations are operated by Northern. Urmston is not served by Metrolink. The nearest Metrolink stations are in Stretford and Eccles.

Milton Hotel, Eccles, Greater Manchester
Stayed the night at the Milton due to other hotels being full for the night in question. It's a very basic hotel, great if you are on a budget. They don't seem to have their own website so booking is via sites like booking.com etc. They apparently do a cheap decent breakfast in the morning but we didn't take up this option so can't comment. Free WIFI and parking.

Worsley is a town in the metropolitan borough of the City of Salford, in Greater Manchester, England. A profile of the electoral ward Worsley conducted by Salford City Council in 2014 recorded a population of 10,090. It lies along the course of Worsley Brook, 5.75 miles (9.25 km) west of Manchester. The M60 motorway bisects the area.
Historically part of Lancashire, Worsley has provided evidence of Roman and Anglo-Saxon activity, including two Roman roads. The completion in 1761 of the Bridgewater Canal allowed Worsley to expand from a small village of cottage industries to an important town based upon cotton manufacture, iron-working, brick-making and extensive coal mining. Later expansion came after the First and Second World Wars, when large urban estates were built in the region.
Today, Worsley is under consideration to be made a World Heritage Site, including Worsley Delph, a scheduled monument. A significant part of the town's historic centre is now a conservation area. Worsley is first mentioned in a Pipe roll of 1195–96 as Werkesleia, in the claim of a Hugh Putrell to a part of the fee of two knights in nearby Barton-upon-Irwell and Worsley.
Worsley stands about 206 feet (63 m) above sea level. Sheltered at the foot of a middle coal measure running approximately northwest and southeast across the area, the village lies along the course of Worsley Brook, which cuts through the ridge. The ridge also forms part of the northern edge of the Irwell Valley.
One of Worsley's early industries was weaving. A cottage industry, cotton would be spun on spinning wheels and hand-operated looms in people's homes to produce cloth. Merchants would then purchase this cloth, selling it at the Bridgewater Hotel, then known as the Old Grapes Inn.
Worsley now has little industry, and is in the main a tourist destination and commuter town. The area has two large hotels; a Novotel and a Marriott. Worsley Old Hall is now a public house and restaurant in the Brunning and Price chain, part of the Restaurant Group
Worsley Village was in 1969 designated as a conservation area by the former Lancashire County Council. Bisected by the A572 Worsley Road, the area covered about 34.25 acres (138,600 m2) of land and included 40 listed buildings, such as the Packet House, a telephone kiosk, and the Delph sluice gates, but this list has since increased to 48 listed buildings.

Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county and combined authority area in North West England, with a population of 2.8 million; the third largest in England after Greater London and the West Midlands. It encompasses one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United Kingdom and comprises ten metropolitan boroughs: Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan, and the cities of Manchester and Salford. Greater Manchester was created on 1 April 1974, as a result of the Local Government Act 1972, and designated a functional city region on 1 April 2011.Greater Manchester spans 493 square miles (1,277 km2),, which roughly covers the territory of the Greater Manchester Built-up Area, the second most populous urban area in the UK. Though geographically landlocked, it is connected to the sea by the Manchester Ship Canal which is still open to shipping in Salford and Trafford. Greater Manchester borders Cheshire (to the south-west and south), Derbyshire (to the south-east), West Yorkshire (to the north-east), Lancashire (to the north) and Merseyside (to the west). ECCLESHALL TOWN STAFFORDSHIRE SPRING WALK
Eccleshall is a town and civil parish in the Stafford district, in the county of Staffordshire, England. It is located seven miles north west of Stafford, and six miles west of Stone. Eccleshall is twinned with Sancerre in France.
Manchester Metrolink - This is a service to MediaCityUK
The Eccles line is currently closed for engineering works. Trams finish at MediaCityUK where a replacement bus service is in operation for onward travel
