Balcombe Circular (Sussex) | Top 10 walks | Day Hike Saturday | ???????? Hiking UK | England

The gardens of Nymans & the ruins of Slaugham

Distance: 17.6 km (10.9 miles)
Grading: Intermediate
Rating: 5 out of 10.
Ascent: 696.8 m
hiking time: About 4 to 5 hours of actual hiking

It is a walk full of small pleasures: a nature reserve and lake with Japanese flag down the stream below the gardens and park with its manor Nymans part in ruins; a cemetery in Slaugham with a yew tree 600 years old, about 10 meters in circumference; the ruins of Slaugham Manor; then a walk to the River Ouse - with the incongruous sight of a semicircular arch and columns in the middle of nowhere - and later through fields and woods to the ancient village of Balcombe fine.

This walk is covered by our Club's insurance. Our Club is registered on The British Mountaineering Council (BMC)

Places to see in ( Royal Tunbridge Wells - UK )

Royal Tunbridge Wells is a large affluent town in western Kent, England, about 40 miles south-east of central London by road, 34.5 miles by rail. The town is close to the border of the county of East Sussex. Royal Tunbridge Wells is situated at the northern edge of the High Weald, the sandstone geology of which is exemplified by the rock formations at the Wellington Rocks and High Rocks.

The town of Royal Tunbridge Wells came into being as a spa in the Restoration and had its heyday as a tourist resort under Beau Nash when the Pantiles and its chalybeate spring attracted visitors who wished to take the waters. Though Royal Tunbridge Wells popularity waned with the advent of sea bathing, the town remains popular and derives some 30 percent of its income from the tourist industry.

Royal Tunbridge Wells is the administrative centre of Tunbridge Wells Borough and the UK parliamentary constituency of Tunbridge Wells. In the United Kingdom, Royal Tunbridge Wells has a reputation as being the archetypal conservative Middle England town, a stereotype that is typified by the fictional letter-writer Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells.

Tunbridge Wells is at the hub of a series of roads. Tunbridge Wells town historically had three railway stations: two of these are still in use by National Rail services. Tunbridge Wells station is, as its former name of Tunbridge Wells Central suggests, centrally located within the town at the end of the High Street, whilst High Brooms station is situated in High Brooms, to the north of the town. Both stations are located on the double-tracked electrified Hastings Line; services are operated by the Southeastern train operating company.

Places to see in ( Haywards Heath - UK )

Places to see in ( Haywards Heath - UK )

Haywards Heath is a town in the Mid Sussex District of West Sussex, within the historic county of Sussex, England. Haywards Heath lies 36 miles (58 km) south of London, 14 miles (23 km) north of Brighton, 13 miles (21 km) south of Gatwick Airport and 31 miles (50 km) east northeast of the county town of Chichester.

Nearby towns include Burgess Hill to the southwest, Horsham to the northwest, Crawley north-northwest and East Grinstead north-northeast. Being a commuter town with only a relatively small number of jobs available in the immediate vicinity, mostly in the agricultural or service sector, many of the residents commute daily via road or rail to London, Brighton, Crawley or Gatwick for work.

Haywards Heath gets a mention in English Civil War records. Early in December 1642 the High Sheriff of Sussex (Sir Edward Ford) advanced with Royalist troops towards Lewes in East Sussex from Chichester in West Sussex. He was intercepted in Haywards Heath by local Parliamentarians and defeated. Haywards Heath as a settlement is a relatively modern development.

Housing in Haywards Heath has been expanded significantly in the last ten years due to the creation of Bolnore Village, located to the south west of the existing town. Planning permission was first granted in the late 1990s for 780 new homes on a greenfield site. Haywards Heath railway station is a major station on the Brighton Main Line. Some of the train services divide at Haywards Heath before continuing their journey to the south, or join other services before continuing north.

Haywards Heath is primarily served by the A272 road, which runs around the south side of the town. This is the new Haywards Heath by-pass, which was opened (ahead of schedule) in August 2014. It diverts town centre traffic south of the town, just south of Bolnore Village, Ashenground and the Princess Royal Hospital. The old A272 through the town centre is now the B2272. Following the A272 to the west, it joins the A23 road which runs both to Brighton to the south and London to the north.

Karen Brown's Gravetye Manor, East Grinstead, England

The Gravetye Manor in the town of East Grinstead, England

Gravetye is a truly handsome Elizabethan manor house set in the most glorious of gardens.

It is one of our favorite English country house hotels.

You catch the spirit of the place as soon as you walk into the oak-paneled hall with its big fireplace and inviting armchairs.

The lovely sitting room with its enormous stone fireplace has the same atmosphere of age-old welcome and comfort.

Bedrooms are elegantly furnished with soft-toned fabrics, which contrast warmly with intricately carved wood paneling.

Firescreens hide televisions and interesting books are close at hand.

You will love the acres of gardens flourishing just as former owner William Robinson, who pioneered the natural look in English gardens, would have wished them to.

His beloved kitchen garden has been restored and chef Rupert Gleadow puts its produce to good use.

Other glorious English gardens within easy driving distance include Sissinghurst and Sheffield Park.

Nearby is Standen, one of the finest Arts and Crafts houses, with furnishings by Morris and Benson.

It's a very handy place to stay for both Glyndebourne and Gatwick airport.

Travel your Dreams with Karen Brown!

Length 17.6km (10.9 miles), 5 hours. For the whole outing, including trains, sights and meals, allow 10 hours.

Toughness 5 out of 10.

Sheffield Park and Gardens - the best fall colors (National Trust)

I visit Sheffield Park and Gardens, owned by the National Trust during its peak autumn colours, or fall colors depending on where in the world you're viewing this from. I learn about the gardens past with both Capability Brown's involvement in the original design, to Arthur Soames, the park's involvement in World War 2 and the National Trust taking it over.

This can be done as a wonderful day trip from London by train as Sheffield Park and Gardens are in East Sussex. Trains depart either London Victoria or London Bridge for East Grinstead (end of the normal line) You'll then need to purchase a ticket for the privately operated Bluebell Railway line which is a beautiful, romantic, old steam train. This will take you from East Grinstead to Sheffield Park and is an event in itself.

It's a 10-ish minute walk from the station to Sheffield Park and Garden's entrance. It's well sign posted and aside from the initial busy road you must cross upon leaving the station, the rest of the walk is across lovely English countryside fields filled with friendly farmer's sheep. This is a spectacular part of South East England

The Greenwich Meridian Trail: East Grinstead to Oxted 20 June 2018

An 11.5 mile section of the Greenwich Meridian Trail long distance footpath between East Grinstead and Oxted. The walk went via the villages of Lingfield and Crowhurst. On the walk, three churches are visited! The weather started off cloudy, but soon turned sunny and very warm. I was very tired at the end of this walk! The walk took place on Wednesday 20 June 2018.
