Dorking is a market town in Surrey, England between Ranmore Common in the North Downs range of hills and Leith Hill in the Greensand Ridge, centred 21 miles from London. In the Georgian and Victorian periods six prominent sites in the former parish or on its boundaries became grand country estates: Leith Hill Place, Denbies (today a vineyard/hotel), Norbury Park, Polesden Lacey, Wotton House and Deepdene; five of which along with nearby Box Hill's promontory and chalk grassland slopes belong to the National Trust.
Dorking is a commuter and retirement settlement with three railway stations and a few large offices of multinational companies. Similarly, Malden in 1911, noted the place was almost entirely residential and agricultural, with some lime works on the chalk, though not so extensive as those in neighbouring parishes, a little brick-making, water-mills (corn) at Pixham Mill, and timber and saw-mills. Fine sand often in veins of pink, used for mortar and in glassmaking was dug, particularly in the 19th century — the Dorking Caves were accordingly excavated under southern parts of the town centre itself.
Dorking chickens with short five-toed legs are a major breed. The town has a local government headquarters and hosts repeating loops of the FIA-ranked London-Surrey cycle classic elite category event every year.
Dorking is in the west of the area between hill ranges in southern England known as Holmesdale which has headwaters of several rivers. The town's geography is undulating; for example, the elevation of the southern point of the central one-way system is 76 metres and on its northern side the elevation is 59–60 metres. To the south west of the town is Leith Hill, also owned by the National Trust, the second highest point in the south east of England after Walbury Hill. The tower on the summit elevates the hill to 1,000 ft (300 m) above sea level. The area is towards the east of the Surrey Hills AONB surrounded by the Greensand Ridge, including Holmbury Hill and Pitch Hill, as well as the nearby escarpment of the North Downs from Box Hill to Newlands Corner.
Dorking three main trading streets of High Street, West Street and South Street are complemented by a small open-air shopping centre, St Martin's Walk, which is adjacent to the town's main car park and easily accessed from the High Street. In the late 1990s Dorking Halls was given a huge refit, to make it a cinema and theatre complex. In 2003 a new modern leisure centre and swimming pool were added to the Dorking Halls Complex. There is a thin, somewhat shiny metal statue of a Dorking cockerel on the Deepdene roundabout.
Dorking and nearby Box Hill were chosen as part of the route for the 2012 London Olympics cycling road race and have featured in the FIA-ranked London-Surrey cycle classic every year since. The Deepdene Trail, a heritage walking trail, opens in September 2016 offering walks for all levels of fitness in a quiet space just 15 minutes from Dorking High Street.
Dorking is at the junction of the A24 (London to Worthing) and A25 (Maidstone to Guildford) roads. Dorking railway station, on the Epsom to Horsham Sutton & Mole Valley Line. Dorking Deepdene, on the Guildford to Redhill North Downs Line. Dorking West, also on the Guildford to Redhill North Downs Line.

10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

Best Walks Near London - Reigate to Box Hill and Dorking - North Downs Way
This walk is around 7 miles with railway stations at either end. It is about an hour on the train from Victoria to get to which makes it a great day out in open countryside out of the city. I walk up Reigate Hill to Reigate Fort before coming out to a beautiful panaramic view of Surrey and West and East Sussex. The Surrey Hills is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and exercise, fresh air and head space time is great for your wellbeing. I pass the Betchworth Lime Kiln old quarry and film DJI Mini footage of it plus the incredible scenery and views from the North Downs Way.

Dorking is a market town in Surrey in South East England, about 34 km (21 mi) south of London. It is in Mole Valley District and the council headquarters are to the east of the centre. The High Street runs roughly east-west, parallel to the Pipp Brook and along the northern face of an outcrop of Lower Greensand. The town is surrounded on three sides by the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is close to Box Hill and Leith Hill.
The earliest archaeological evidence of human activity is from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods, and there are several Bronze Age bowl barrows in the local area. The town may have been the site of a staging post on Stane Street during Roman times, however the name 'Dorking' suggests an Anglo-Saxon origin for the modern settlement. A market is thought to have been held at least weekly since early medieval times and was highly regarded for the poultry traded there. The Dorking breed of domestic chicken is named after the town. The local economy thrived during Tudor times, but declined in the 17th century due to poor infrastructure and competition from neighbouring towns. During the early modern period many inhabitants were nonconformists, including the author, Daniel Defoe, who lived in Dorking as a child. Six of the Mayflower Pilgrims, including William Mullins and his daughter Priscilla, lived in the town before setting sail for the New World. Dorking started to expand during the 18th and 19th centuries as transport links improved and farmland to the south of the centre was released for housebuilding. The new turnpike, and later the railways, facilitated the sale of lime produced in the town, but also attracted wealthier residents, who had had no previous connection to the area. Residential expansion continued in the first half of the 20th century, as the Deepdene and Denbies estates began to be broken up. Further development is now constrained by the Metropolitan Green Belt, which encircles the town.

Perfect for a day hike allowing yourself around 6 hours for the hiking with breaks. The hike is not difficult with only two main ascents up to around 200 metres and mainly on top of the North Downs with views across Surrey. A perfect day trip out of the city where you can rejuvenate and get some fresh air and exercise recharging your batteries ????????????????

WALKING IN SURREY | A RAINY DAY EXPLORING DORKING AND GLORY WOOD
Myself and the very lovely Candice are back in Surrey, doing a 3 mile circular walk in the historic town of Dorking.
It rained, a lot. Dorking was home to several famous people throughout its rich history and they are commemorated via several statues. The River Mole flows through the town and it was also home to some of the first pilgrims to move to America. There is a magnificent church and even tunnels under the town (these of course were not open at the time of our visit given the current climate, but they do run tours down there and I hope to return there for a visit).
We also passed through Glory Wood which was once part of the vast Deepdene house estate. There is an ancient burial mound hidden in the woods and upon further research, hidden tunnels from WWII and underground monitoring rooms (once again, a return trip for some urbex is in order) as well as remains of the gardens and ruins of the Deepdene House which form the Deepdene Trail. The wood also looks ideal for a cheeky wild camp. Watch this space...

Virtual Voyage: Dorking
In this week’s Virtual Voyage we explore 17th century Dorking, the picturesque Surrey town once home to the shoemaker William Mullins and his family.
Six people from Dorking travelled on the Mayflower headed by businessman William - who brought with him 250 shoes and 13 pairs of boots.
His teenage daughter Priscilla was also on board, and her later marriage to the ship’s Cooper John Alden - despite the overtures of soldier Myles Standish - and their children mean millions of Americans can trace their lineage to this family and pretty English town.
We’ll visit the original home of the Mullins family in Dorking, thought to be the only surviving home of a Mayflower passenger in England.

The Surrey Hills is a 422 km2 (163 sq mi) Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which principally covers parts of the North Downs and Greensand Ridge in Surrey, England (approximately one quarter of the land area of the county). The AONB was designated in 1958 and adjoins the Kent Downs AONB to the east and the South Downs National Park in the south west.
Box Hill is a summit of the North Downs in Surrey, approximately 31 km (19 mi) south-west of London. The hill gets its name from the ancient box woodland found on the steepest west-facing chalk slopes overlooking the River Mole. The western part of the hill is owned and managed by the National Trust, whilst the village of Box Hill lies on higher ground to the east.
