10 Poorest Places in The UK

What are the poorest places in the UK? The last thing that’ll come to mind when the UK is mentioned is poverty. It’s not among the countries you’ll associate poverty with. This should be clearly noted as we begin. Yet, not every part of Great Britain has the affluence of London, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. Some places in the UK are poor. We’re here to show you the 10 poorest places in the UK.
These places are the same neighborhood with the biggest shortages of basic social infrastructure and facilities such as playgrounds, parks, pubs, shops, and sports centers. You’ll find some of them among the areas left behind in England, Wales, and Scotland. Authorities have to do something about these 10 poorest places in the UK.
10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
As proof of how gripping the poverty state of this town is, its population reduced by almost 3,000 within 10 years. In a report that shows how poor some parts of the nations are, Greenock tops the list. In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.
8. Halton, England
England too has some of the poorest places in the UK and the first of these on this list is the eighth poorest place in the UK, Halton. The district and unitary authority that registers its name on this list has a borough status in Cheshire.
When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.

Picturesque Villages in Dorset, including Shaftesbury, a small Saxon hilltop town in North Dorset, is most famous for its iconic image of Gold Hill. Standing 700 feet above sea level, it was over these famous cobbles that a boy pushed his bicycle (with a loaf of Hovis in the front basket) in the iconic television advert of 1973.

Places to see in ( Dorchester - UK )

Places to see in ( Dorchester - UK )

Dorchester is the county town of Dorset, England. Dorchester is situated between Poole and Bridport on the A35 trunk route. A historic market town, Dorchester is on the banks of the River Frome to the south of the Dorset Downs and north of the South Dorset Ridgeway that separates the area from Weymouth, 7 miles (11 km) to the south.

The area around Dorchester was first settled in prehistoric times. The Romans established a garrison there after defeating the Durotriges tribe, calling the settlement that grew up nearby Durnovaria; they built an aqueduct to supply water and an amphitheatre on an ancient British earthwork. After the departure of the Romans, Dorchester diminished in significance, but during the medieval period became an important commercial and political centre. It was the site of the Bloody Assizes presided over by Judge Jeffreys after the Monmouth Rebellion, and later the trial of the Tolpuddle Martyrs.

The Brewery Square redevelopment project is taking place in phases, with other development projects planned. The town has a land-based college, Kingston Maurward College, the Thomas Hardye Upper School, three middle schools and thirteen first schools. The Dorset County Hospital offers an accident and emergency service, and the town is served by two railway stations. Through vehicular traffic is routed round the town by means of a bypass. The town has a football club and a rugby union club, several museums and the biannual Dorchester Festival. It is twinned with three towns in Europe. As well as having many listed buildings, a number of notable people have been associated with the town. It was for many years the home and inspiration of the author Thomas Hardy, whose novel The Mayor of Casterbridge uses a fictionalised version of Dorchester as its setting.

Dorchester town centre is sited about 55 to 80 metres (180 to 262 ft) above sea-level on gently sloping ground beside the south bank of the River Frome. Measured directly, it is about 7 miles (11 km) north of Weymouth, 18 miles (29 km) SSE of Yeovil in Somerset, and 20 miles (32 km) west of Poole.

The town has two railway stations. Dorchester South is on the South Western Main Line to Bournemouth, Southampton and London is operated by South West Trains; Dorchester West, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, is on the Heart of Wessex Line, operated by GWR and connects with Yeovil, Bath and Bristol. As part of the regeneration at the Brewery Site in the town centre, Dorchester South railway station will become the first solar powered railway station in the UK.

Dorchester Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Dorset, and around 55 miles south of Bristol, is the town of Dorchester.

Geographically Dorchester sits along the River Frome, around five miles inland from the south coast of England. The town was originally a Roman settlement from circa 70 AD, called Durnovaria - a name possibly derived from the Celtic Durotriges tribe whom the Romans displaced. It is the county town of Dorset.

By the late Medieval period Dorchester had become a prosperous wool-producing town. This industry continued up until the 18th century at which point competition from northern towns ushered its decline. Around this time industry in Dorchester turned towards brewing.

In 1630 a ship full of Puritans from Dorset led by a Dorchester rector named John White landed in America. As was popular at the time, the new settlement was named in homage to the origin of its settlers, thus Dorchester, Massachusetts was founded.

Dorchester was the location of a number of trials as part of the Bloody Assize of 1685. Following the Duke of Monmouth's unsuccessful rebellion against King James II, Judge George Jeffreys took up residence at 6 High West Street (visible around the 13-and-a-half minute mark on the right hand side) and presided over the trials of 312 rebels. Judge Jeffreys handed out 251 death sentences, to the shock of many at the time. Although only 74 of these sentences were carried out, Jeffreys gained infamy, and was dubbed 'The Hanging Judge'.

In 1840 Thomas Hardy was born in the neighbouring village of Stinsford, one mile east of Dorchester. Hardy would go on to become a leading author and poet of the late 19th and early 20th century. His novels typically took place in the semi-fictional region of Wessex - an approximation of southwest England. In Hardy's Wessex, Dorchester was called Casterbridge, which features in one of his most famous works - The Mayor of Casterbridge. A statue of Thomas Hardy can be seen on The Grove around the 10-minute mark.

A second statue is seen just after the 14-minute mark - this one depicts William Barnes. Born in 1801, Barnes was a polymath whose skill set included writer, poet, priest, mathematician and inventor. Born in the hamlet of Bagber in the north of Dorset, he lived in Dorchester for several years. Among his works are over 800 poems written in traditional Dorset dialect. It is said that Thomas Hardy visited William Barnes for authoritative opinions on grammar.

The Dorchester London United Kingdom

Sign Up now for your free membership and benefit from exclusive perks and promotions in over 2000 luxury hotels worldwide.

The Dorchester welcomes its guests from all around the world to a five-star hotel boasting an archetypal design and located in the heart of London. It is a symbol of royalty and the most preferred destination of several well-known celebrities.

Dorchester is a destination that symbolizes care, refinement, and anything that soothes your senses. As a result, its glamorous and top-tier quality facilities and designs have gathered many high society members. From Hollywood A-listers, royalty, pop stars, business people, world leaders, the flock of renowned, wealthy clientele is ever-present.

Founded in 1931, the resort is a member of the Dorchester Collection, is a five-star luxury hotel situated in Mayfair, London. Being one of the most recognized and applauded hotels in London, its services far cry from just satisfactory.

Originally designed by Sir Owen Williams, the hotel bears most of the early 1900s decor and style. Through the years of modernization, The Dorchester still proudly retains those furnishings. This amplifies the exquisite designs and timeless glamour of the early 1900s decor in today's time.

The surrounding area provides only the most magnificent of views. The array of different sweet-smelling flowers and trees in the gardens circling the hotel's edge is the ideal spot for a relaxing stroll. To add to the repertoire of ample greenery, The Dorchester overlooks the stunning views of Hyde Park. It is also within walking distance from it, so nature is your friend here.

If the exterior view is blindingly beautiful, the interior might make you think you'd died and gone to heaven. Upon entry, guests can expect smiles from top-hatted doormen. The pearly-hued marble walls and pillars stand on either side of the lobby, leading up to the white and gold concierge desk.

Nine floors in the hotel house 250 rooms and 49 suites, with over 100 overlooking Hyde Park. The rooms give off a sort of majestic aura. Each has four-poster king-sized beds, heavily draped with crisp linen sheets and rich timber furniture. Moreover, the walls have calming prints, using pink and cream hues that reflect beautifully with sunlight.

After Owen Williams of The Dorchester's initial designs, several other architects and interior designers refurbished the rooms. William Curtis Green and Oliver Messel, in particular, redesigned them. They modernized the decor and style while still retaining the 1930s style elements.

This inadvertently leads to each room having an amalgamation of styles, which happens to be a staple of classic British homes. Pieces by some of Britain's best craftsmen are also in each room and suite. Besides, this gives guests a top-class English feel at this stylish hotel.

The bathrooms, too, are just as impeccably opulent as the rooms they are in—chrome and white marble frame the expanse of the walls. Besides, the hotel's floristry team regularly replaces flowers to add some extra color to the residence. The baths said to be the deepest in London are carved from Italian marble in Art Deco style...
