10 Things to do in Ljubljana, Slovenia Travel Guide Video Transcript:

Prešeren Square is a central meeting spot in the heart of the Old Town, so it made sense to start our tour of Ljubljana here. You’ll find the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, lots of gelato shops, and the baffling bridge we just mentioned.

As for the reasoning behind the Triple Bridge and the famed dragon bridge, which is guarded by four dragons.

Ljubljana’s Central Market is another spot worth checking out.

We needed to sample some Slovenian food so we went to Allegria.
Sam ordered Zlikrofi (zhlee-krofi), a Slovenian dumpling stuffed with potato + lamb goulash along with Slovenian sausage with cabbage & potatoes.

Ljubljana Castle, which sits on Castle Hill overlooking the city. Built as a medieval fortress in the 11th century, Ljubljana Castle has seen many redesigns and renovations. Climb the Outlook Tower for 360 degree views of the city.

There are departures for cruises down the Ljubljanica. We boarded a cruise directly underneath the Love Lock Bridge, which is actually called Mesarski Most. It was our favourite activity in Ljubljana and it was a super relaxed way to watch the city.

Metelkova is home to the best street art.

One place we really enjoyed was Sarajevo 84, a restaurant specializing in Balkan cuisine. The portions massive & everything we ordered was delicious.

We had a feast featuring: grilled meat with pita and onions, baked beans and sausage, roasted peppers, and a flaky pastry stuffed with cheese. It only came to 23 Euros.

Speaking of galleries and museums, a few you’ll find include: the National Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art, and the National Museum of Slovenia.

We finished off at Tivoli, which is the largest park in Ljubljana.

And that’s it for our time in Ljubljana. Our visit was short, tasty, and relaxing, and we’re really glad we made some time to visit this underrated capital.

Now you guys know the drill; if there are any other things to do in Ljubljana that we may have missed in this travel guide, feel free to share your suggestions with fellow travellers below.

Just slightly over an hour by bus and roughly 45 minutes by car Lake Bled is easily accessible from Ljubljana.

With most attractions clustered around the lake a perfect way to spend a day visiting Lake Bled is to walk around the lake, visit Bled Castle, eat local cake and have a leisurely lunch along with taking a boat trip out to the island. All of this can be done in a day allowing you to return to Ljubljana in the early evening.

Let's find out what makes Lake Bled one of the most popular day trips for visitors traveling in Slovenia.

Lake Bled Travel Guide | Day Trip from Ljubljana, Slovenia Video Transcript:

Lake Bled is probably the most popular day trip you can take from Ljubljana. This is a lake that sits on the Julian Alps, and in the middle of the lake you have a small island with a church - it’s about as picturesque as it gets and it draws massive crowds, but first, the journey there.

Bled Castle is a medieval castle that was built on a cliff rising 130 meters over Lake Bled. According to written sources, this is the oldest castle in Slovenia, first being mentioned in a document from the year 1011. The castle is set up around two courtyards which are connected with a staircase. Once you’re there, you can visit the chapel, check out some of the exhibits, watch a demonstration at the castle forge, or eat at the castle coffee shop or restaurant.

After the castle visit, we hiked back down and started our walk along Lake Bled because we were still feeling pretty stuffed from lunch. Little did we know this would take us several hours to complete.

After eating our slice of Bled Cream Cake, or Kremsnita, it was finally time to arrange a boat ride to Bled Island. While you can rent your own row boat to take out on the island, we chose to pay the 14 Euros per person to have someone else do the hard work. However, if you’re with a group of friends or travelling with family, it’s definitely cheaper to just rent a boat and row it yourself.

Bled Island is very small and it got pretty crowded even though it was low season. Forty minutes turned out to be plenty of time to climb up, have a look around, and enjoy some ice cream.

Now one last piece of advice: we visited in the off-season and at the end of the day, we found out there were not enough buses to transport everyone from Lake Bled back to Ljubljana.

We weren’t able to get on one bus because it was full, so we waited an hour and a half for the next one. By then, more day-trippers like us had gathered, and once again, not everyone could get on the bus, leaving a lot of people stranded, having to find a taxi or other alternative.

There was a lot of pushing and shoving, and many visitors with prepaid tickets were visibly upset.

Because our bus was full, this also meant that even though there were several scheduled stops on the way back to Ljubljana, we couldn’t pick up any passengers along the way, many of them who had been waiting for hours.

Lake Bled has experienced a boom in tourism, but the infrastructure to transport people hasn’t quite caught up yet. After a nice day visiting Bled, getting out of there proved to be very chaotic and stressful. Hopefully things will change in the future, but until then, know that leaving at the end can be tricky.

Logarska Dolina Valley , Slovenia

Logarska Dolina is the most visited but also the best developed of the three glacial valleys in the Saving Valley. It was created by a glacier during the Ice Age and is just under 7 kilometres long and around 500 meters wide at its narrowest point. The peaks that surround the valley belong to the Steiner Alps and are almost all over 2000 meters high.
In 1987 it was placed under protection and declared a landscape park.Today , around 35 people live on the isolated farms in the valley.
The road that takes you into the valley is around 4 kilometres from Solcava , the next larger town in the area. It is just 9 kilometres to the end of the valley with a parking lot and the small hut Koca pod Slalom Rinka.Various hikes in the area also start here, including the popular tour to the Rinka Waterfall.

Rinka Waterfall is situated at the far-endow the beautiful Logar valley(Logarska Dolina Valley)on the northern side of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, close to the border with Austria.
The waterfall itself is absolutely magnificent and very photogenic. With a 90 meter drop its the second highest waterfall in Slovenia. The sound of it can be heard from quite some distance.

Having said that, I wish you a pleasant viewing and I hope our experience will be an inspiration for you too!

We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Rovinj tourism brochure, Rovinj itinerary or Rovinj, Istria city tour.

10 things to do in Rovinj, Croatia Travel Guide | Rovigno Day Trip from Pula Transcript:

Today we are heading on a day trip. How exciting. Yes. So we've been based in Pula for a little while. Yep. And today we are going to Rovinj (Rovigno). It is only like 30 or 40 minutes away by bus. Yeah. So it is going to make for an awesome day trip. We've basically scheduled the whole day in Rovinj. We are leaving in the morning and we're probably going to come back after sunset.

After eating breakfast, we decided to do a little bit of exploring along the waterfront. We walked the full length of the marina stopping to take photos of the brightly painted buildings with matching window shutters, plus rows and rows of boats. Then once we reached the end, we were treated to these postcard-perfect shots of Rovinj from a distance.

A fun fact about Rovinj: though it’s now connected to the mainland, this once used to be an island. It was connected in 1763 as part of a land reclamation project under the Venetian Empire, which also explains why certain parts of the city may remind you of Venice.

After wandering around for a few hours, it was finally time for lunch, so we returned to the waterfront looking for a seaside restaurant.

Audrey had the shrimp risotto, I had shrimp pizza, and yes, we both shared with the cats, who had learned to swat if you approached empty-handed.

Atop the hill, we reached St. Euphemia’s Church. If you’re feeling particularly brave, you can even try climbing the bell tower’s infamous creaking wooden steps. Such are the steps’ reputation, that there’s even a bulletin board inside the church with photos of what to expect. We didn’t make it to the top, thought I was happy to settle for terrace views.

Later that afternoon, the skies finally cleared, so we enjoyed another walk along the harbour as well as a gelato stop along the way.

So what’s the verdict on Rovinj? You can definitely explore the town in one day, but if you have a few days to spare, this would make an even better base to explore the rest of Istria.

Our visit Zadar travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (Croatian), top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting churches, parks, the old town, quirky neighborhoods, museums, observation points and roman ruins. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Zadar tourism brochure, Zadar itinerary or Zadar, Croatia city tour also known as Zadar, Hrvatska.

10 Things to do in Zadar, Croatia Travel Guide Video Transcript:

Let's visit Zadar, Croatia together as we cover 10 of the best things to do in Zadar in this travel guide.

Our first stop was Queen Jelena Madijevka Park which has the distinction of being the oldest public park in Croatia. The park looks over the Land Gate which is the main entrance to the Old Town.

During the 16th century, the Venetians helped Zadar withstand the Turkish sieges by building a large water cistern with five wellheads, giving this square its name. These five wells were used to supply the city with water until the year 1838.

Among the ruins of the forum, you might notice there’s one particular Roman column that still stands intact. This one is called the shame post which during the Middle Ages was used to chain and humiliate people who had committed crimes.

The Church of St. Donatus sits in the middle of the Roman Forum and it dates back to the beginning of the 9th century. The church was built in the Byzantine-style in a circular shape - typical of the early medieval construction in Dalmatia. This church has seen many uses from warehouse to museum, but these days it hosts concerts.

Located right next to St. Donatus, the bell tower is actually part of St Anastasija's Cathedral. Climbing this Romanesque bell tower is not for the faint of heart, especially once you reach the spiralling metal staircase on the last floor, but if you make it, you are rewarded with views of the town and the marina.

The meal came to 32 Euros for two mains, two glasses or red wine, and two desserts. The truffle gnocchi was our favourite truffle dish in Croatia.

When it comes to sunset, there are quite a few spots to choose from. We really enjoyed the pier right across from the Roman Forum, however, the Sea Organ is another popular spot. If you do go to the Sea Organ for sunset, you can also check out the Greeting to the Sun, which is another unusual art installation.
This solar-powered work of art lights up in an array of colours once the sun goes down.

Lastly, we leave you with a few scenes of Zadar at night.

We hope you enjoyed this video and we’ll see you in the next one as we continue our travels in Croatia.

Discover SLOVENIA

For such a tiny country, #Slovenia sure packs in a whole lot. Often overlooked because of its big-name neighbors, Italy, Austria, Croatia, and to an extent, even Hungary, Slovenia delivers on so many levels that we are surprised it isn't more popular. From cute-as-a-button capital Ljubljana (populationL under 300,000), to majestic Lake Bled, or untouched Lake Bohinj, wine regions in the north of the country, the Julian Alps and Soca River Valley, to Venetian-flavored Piran on the coast, you could spend weeks discovering Slovenia and still want to come back for more. This video is just a sampler of the delights of Slovenia.

And we didn't even mention the food. Recently Slovenian gastronomy is getting worldwide recognition, and there should really be no surprise. Take the influences of all those neighbors, throw in the diverse climate zones the country enjoys, and add in some top-class culinary skill, and you have Slovenia.

Slovenia to Croatia by Bus Travel Vlog

Come join us for a long day of bus travel as we head from Slovenia to Croatia via Italy starting off at Ljubljana and the changing buses at Trieste and finally arriving in Pula. Before I talk about the journey we forgot to mention the the price point of the journey because we had credit from an earlier trip we canceled way back when we were visiting Budapest:

Price of our bus ticket with Flixbus from Ljubljana, Slovenia to Pula, Croatia via Trieste, Italy = 11.50 Euros per person

Things didn't start off great with our bus being over an hour late arriving in Ljubljana, Slovenia. With a connection to make in Trieste, Italy we figured, especially after being delayed a bit on the highway because of construction repairs, we wouldn't make our connection but we did with merely 3 minutes to spare. Because of that we didn't have time to grab lunch in Italy which was our original plan and we quickly ran out of snacks. As a tip, always pack enough snacks, in anticipation of things not going to plan. This is a lesson we learned.

Crossing through the border into Croatia from Italy was a breeze. Upon arriving in Pula we checked into our airbnb and went out for pizza, risotto and Vranac red wine followed by ice cream (gelato) and more red wine at our airbnb. A perfect way to start things off and we can't wait to share our food and travel adventures with you in Croatia.

Slovenia to Croatia by Bus Travel Vlog Video Transcript:

So today it is our last day here in Slovenia in Ljubljana and we are going to Croatia for the first time. The start of our Balkan adventures begins right now.

What we have to do right - it is early Sunday morning and we're going to be walking over to the bus station. It is about a 20 minutes walk from our AirBNB that we just checked out of. And then we're catching a bus (tickets = 11.50 Euros per person) and it is going to actually the route veers through Italy and then we're crossing in through the border. We'll be stopping in Trieste. We have an hour and a half. Gotta switch buses and we'll have to do immigration. It is going to be a bit of a long day but what we're hoping to do is get some nice Italian food. We'll show you the journey. Let's get started.

Our bus was over an hour late. An hour and ten minutes to be precise. We're not sure if we're going to make our connection so it is going to be tight.

We just barely made our connection. Oh wow. I feel so relieved. I really didn't think we would get it so. This is the best news so we should still be on time. We made it by like 3 minutes that is all.

How do you like bus travel Sam? Well, I'd say at this point I'm a little tired. I've been sleeping the whole way. You have. I haven't. I've been filming the whole time. The film maker. So basically we crossed the border here. We're currently in Istria. Yes. And we need to travel all the way down to Pula at the very bottom.

That was one of the easiest border crossings ever. Oh yeah. The guy came on the border control came onto the bus, we handed over our passports, got stamps and then we were off on our way. It took like 5 minutes.

For dinner we at pizza, risotto and ice cream (gelato) along with Vranac red wine. We're just going to chill and have some more wine and we can't wait to show you some more food and travel videos from Croatia soon. Ciao.

Visit Izola - What to do and where to go?

Izola - the old fishing town in Slovenia

Izola is a lively Mediterranean town, distinctive for the amicable character and hospitality of its inhabitants. Nowadays, Izola is mostly a tourist-oriented town, nevertheless, it has remained faithful to its origins and dedicated to its primary activities of fishing as well as wine and oil production, traits making it so very distinctive from other seaside towns.

The town took its name after the Latin word for “island”, i.e. “insula”, on which it was first established. But it would never be what it is now without the identity of its people who try to preserve local traditions and a connected community of two nations, Slovenian and Italian, a communion of two languages and a shared love for their home town.

A rich and varied architectural heritage, mystical streets of the old town centre and majestic stone portals tell stories of a turbulent past, but Izola is exciting and a new page of history is written every day. The lively rhythm of cultural events and festivals, the suggestive fishing and hospitality habits, dances, entertainment and sports events are all an invaluable source of life and vibrant energy that keep Izola and the people alive, smiling and high-spirited.

Bratislava to Ljubljana by Bus Travel Vlog

Join us as we travel from Bratislava to Ljubljana by bus in this travel vlog. Our day started early in Bratislava, Slovakia where we give you basically the shortest apartment tour we've ever done. In terms of the price of our AirBnB apartment, we forgot to mention it on the vlog, it came to $49 USD (42 Euros) per night. The listing is below:

AirBNB discount:
Our Bratislava AirBnB:

Because we decided to change our travel route a few months ago from the Balkans to Poland, we had to cancel our Flixbus bus ticket meaning we ended up getting credit with them. We used this credit to purchase our ticket from Bratislava to Ljubljana via Vienna. The actual cost of the ticket was $32 USD / 28 Euros per person. The journey ended up being a full day event as we had a stopover in Vienna for a while. We arrived tired and hungry but also excited to be in Ljubljana, Slovenia for the 1st time.

Slovakia to Slovenia bus ride from Bratislava to Vienna to Ljubljana travel vlog video transcript:

Well good morning good morning. It is far too early for me. I think it is maybe six. Oh my gosh. Yeah. Six thirty. We need to leave soon. We really do. So today is a travel day. We're leaving Bratislava and going to Ljubljana via Vienna so we're going to be walking to the bus terminal. Before we go Sam is going to give you the world's fastest apartment tour.

We've made it. 40 minutes early. We've made it so now we're going to get some breakfast.

So what did we find? Sam got us Gatorade. Also we found a little bakery here. And a sandwich. They had some nice looking sweets but I'm just not craving that. Once we get on the bus I'm going back to sleep.

Time to say fare thee well to Bratislava. What did you think? You know what? I really connected with this place. Like we were here for a week. And like just by staying longer I was able to like go to a hockey game. In terms of visiting a lot of people just come on a day trip from Vienna or they're arriving on a riverboat cruise and yeah you could cover a lot of the main attractions in a day but I feel it is definitely more of a weekend type of destination. If you can come for 2 or 3 days. Our favorite was Devin Castle.

Look it is PolskiBus. We had some really good rides with you in Poland.

We made it to Vienna. It is freezing cold in comparison to when we were here a week ago. It is even colder here than in Bratislava isn't it? Seriously this morning. We have a one wait time but our bus should be coming soon and we will continue on to Ljubljana. What is in your hand? Got some juice. Apple juice. Picked up a few snacks that are in my backpack. We'll munch away once we're on the bus warm and toasty.

Snack. We're on a bus. Finally. Continuing the journey. What did you get? These are pretty good for wafer cookies. These are like the when we were in Vienna we saw them all over the place. These are Manner Wien. Neopolitaner and pretzels.

Update. We have arrived a little bit behind schedule and we had no lunch stops. At the hangry stage. Yes. So we're just going to grab some food around the station and that is that. Food.

Food has arrived. It was one of those days where we were like we're going to eat at the first place we find. Haha. Not the healthiest. Coke, pizza and burek. Not Slovenian food but it is the first food we found. We'll get into the local cuisine at some point.

This is how we feel after a day of riding buses. Urgh. We are both super greasy and tired oh my gosh. I need a shower. But where did we leave off? From the bus we walked to our AirBNB. It was a 20 minute walk. Yep. And we checked in, then we went and did some groceries. Honestly, I don't even know why we're tired because I slept on that bus ride so much. Like I slept 80% of the time. We're really excited to be here. First time in Slovenia & Ljubljana. We're going to be exploring the city. We also really want to do a day trip to Lake Bled. We have a lot that we're going to do while we're here after some rest. Saying good bye now.
