Our WEIRDEST European TRAIN Experience [Cluj-Napoca to Budapest]
We've traveled via European train a few times this year, but the journey from Cluj-Napoca to Budapest was probably the strangest train ride we've had thus far.
We loved our time in Cluj Napoca & our biggest regret was not just staying there longer, but staying in Romania longer. Unfortunately our travel plans were taking us out of the country from Cluj-Napoca to Budapest. This train journey wasn't expected to be as confusing as it was, but the moment we arrived in Oradea, we knew things were about to get interesting. Wine Regions on the Danube Wine Route of Croatia, Serbia and Romania
Explore the wonderful wine regions on the Danube Trail of Croatia, Serbia and Romania!
Situated between the Danube and the Sava, with numerous channels and lazy waterways cutting across it, the Baranja lowland enjoys a moderate continental climate and boasts ideal vine growing terrain. Fields of wheat and rolling hills covered in vineyards, with charming cottages in between, that’s Baranja. Many of these cottages have wine cellars, some containing 200-year-old barrels.The word “Baranja” in Hungarian means “the Mother of Wine” and that is why visitors really must explore the oldest cellar.
Ilok is the easternmost town of the Republic of Croatia and a place where the East meets the West. It rises elegantly above the Danube, surrounded by the slopes and magnificent vineyards of Fruška Gora. It is a town of long history with interesting cultural contrasts woven into its medieval town, one of the largest urban and fortification complexes of northern Croatia and the Danube basin. However, Ilok is, above all, the Danube kingdom of wine known for its Traminac and other varieties which have been pleasing its visitors for a long time.
The Fruška gora region is most famous for its National Park, sixteen Serbian Orthodox monasteries and, of course, its very old winemaking tradition. The Roman emperor Probus was responsible for the start of viniculture in this area in the 3rd century AD. The Fruška Gora vineyards decorate the lower slopes of the mountain and are blessed with a good microclimate. Sixty privately owned wine cellars offer samples for tasting.
The wines of Negotinska Krajina used to be popular throughout Europe, Russia and Austria-Hungary and even had a specific association for trading the wines of Negotin. As early as the 17th century, the wine-growers of this region began to build their pimnica breweries where they preserved their wine in the stone villages. The beautiful locations of the wine settlements of Rajac, Rogalj, Smedovac, Štubik and Bratujevac have been preserved for visitors to enjoy today.
Muntenia and Oltenia wine region is located south of the central Carpathians in Romania, and the vineyards there cover approximately 104,000 hectares. An ideal mix of Continental and Mediterranean climates, the local micro-climate and soil create a perfect environment for excellent, full-bodied red wines. This wine region is located in the Mehedinci district with the county seat of Drobeta-Turnu Severin situated on the Danube in the famous touristic region of Iron Gate.
The Roman Emperors and Danube Wine Route, with its Danube and Adriatic Trails, extends through nine European countries and it is a network of sub-destinations, created around individual archaeological sites, locations, places and buildings, which are monuments to the leadership of the Roman emperors in Late Antiquity. The wine part of the Route incorporates the regions which continue the tradition of wine production begun in Roman times. For the indigenous peoples, who lived and worked alongside of the Roman soldiers, one can infer that a way “to act Roman” and in a certain sense “to be Roman” was to acquire a taste for this new beverage from the Mediterranean world. The Route was certified as a European Cultural Route by the European Institute for Cultural Routes (EICR).

Mocăniţa - Vişeu de Sus
Mocăniţa de pe Valea Vaserului este unul dintre cele mai renumite puncte turistice din toată România. Anual mii de turişti călătoresc cu Mocăniţa, fiind declarat în 2013 si obiectivul tuistic al anului. Din anul 2000 circulă regulat pe Valea Vaserului trenuri cu abur pentru turişti. Sezonul începe primăvara şi se sfârşeşte toamna. Trenurile turistice urcă până la staţia Paltin (km 21,6), aproximativ două ore depărtare de Vişeu de Sus, acolo unde s-a amenajat un loc plăcut pentru popas. Până la întoarcerea trenului, în Paltin, turiştii pot să îşi petreacă puţin timp în natură, să facă un picnic sau să admire panorama de pe platforma amplasată pe stânca din apropiere. În Paltin există servicii de catering cu o ofertă de mâncare diversificată. Numită adesea „Mocăniţa de pe Valea Vaserului“, Calea Ferată Forestieră din Vişeu de Sus se află chiar în nordul României, la graniţa cu Ucraina şi reprezintă o bogăţie atât din punct de vedere tehnic, cât şi cultural. Pe o rută de aproape 60 kilometri distanţă circulă – pe lângă locomotive Diesel – până astăzi locomotive cu abur înfocate cu lemn, lucru prin care CFF Vişeu de Sus (prescurtare de la Calea Ferată Forestieră) devine cunoscută în întreaga lume ca fiind ultima cale ferată forestieră adevărată, care funcţionează cu abur. Linia care a fost construită dupa ecartamentul austro-ungar de 760mm, duce într-o vale de o sălbăticie fermecătoare, de-a lungul râului Vaser, peste poduri şi prin tunele. Calea ferată trasează o zonă împădurită enormă, unde nu există drumuri sau sate, ci este locuită doar de urşi şi lupi. Schimbările economice de după ’90 au avut efecte fatale asupra CFF-urilor naţionale de atunci: pe parcursul a câtorva ani au fost toate scoase din funcţiune, demontate, locomotivele şi vagoanele date la fier vechi sau vândute. Singura cale ferată forestieră care astăzi mai funcţionează este Mocăniţa de pe Valea Vaserului.

Cu Arnaud Charmetant în tractor spre Balta Ialomiței
Am ajuns la Agricom Borcea și după ce am fost așteptați cu pâine și sare, după tradiția românească, am plecat spre Balta Ialomiței unde se lucrează 7000 ha cu grâu, orz, porumb, floarea-soarelui, soia, muștar și altele. Pe o parte dintre aceste culturi se aplică filosofia AIDER, adică mai puține lucrări, o conservare mai riguroasă a nutrienților și apei din sol. Urmează să vedeți emisiunea în care am vizitat culturile și am văzut cum se aplică această filosofie. Să mergem!
SACUIENI BIHOR, gara importanta pe o linie secundara, cu legaturi slabe
După Oradea, am ajuns cu chin cu vai la Săcuieni, stația e denumită însă SĂCUIENI BIHOR, din valii motive.
Locul este calm, bine, și eu am venit într-o perioadă a zilei în care era puțină mișcare, însă stația e la ceva distanță de centrul localității, care nu e ceva convenabil pentru călători.
Haideți să vedem ce găsim aici.

After Oradea, I arrived in Săcuieni with pain and sorrow, but the station is called SĂCUIENI BIHOR, for various reasons.
The place is calm, well, I came at a time of day when there was little movement, but the station is some distance from the center of town, which is not convenient for travelers.
