Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!

Highlights of the early portion of a well anticipated and well deserve vacation trip back to my home village of Mansion,St.Kitts that raise me through the good and bad times and the scary Primary and the interesting High School days.My previous trip that i made was back in 2006 and another trip back in 2007.In my previous trip,i only stayed a maximum of 10 days so this time around i was determined to spend some more time at least for a month.I flew from St.Croix on August 3rd where i am currently living since 1999 and will return to St.Croix on August 29th to prepare for College in the United States.Its feels real good to breath the Kittitian air once again as we all know how precious life is so am giving thanks to the Creator God for his mercy and blessings by giving me another chance to see some familiar faces and places. It's cool to also see the new generation of villagers that have grown since i last seen them when they were little kids but i can hardly recognise most of them[NEW BORNS AFTER I LEFT IN 1999] unless i can quickly identify a facial feature to one of the family members that i grew up with.
I was born on the beautiful island of St.Thomas from Kittitian parents who were working in the U S Virgin Islands at the time and they took me to their home in Mansion,St.Kitts when i was 8 months in the year of 1975. It was the little beautiful village of Mansion where i learned how to creep,walk,mumble,speak and attended both the Estridge Primary and the Cayon Secondary schools. Its also where all of my childhood memories are hidden, so St.Kitts will always have my love and respect because there is really nooo place like the home that you were raised in.

Take a Minute in Statia 002: View of Boven towards Venus Bay (Boven Nationalpark on St. Eustatius)
Our second Take a Minute in Statia takes you into Boven Nationalpark. Located at the Northern end of St. Eustatius, hiking in the Boven area offers stunning views over rugged land with steep cliffs, grooved rocks, mysterious woods, mesmerizing meadows, historic reminiscences, oddly shaped cacti and secluded bays, like Venus Bay.
This minute was filmed from the top of the highest peak at 289 metres in these Northern hills of Statia: Boven. Enormous copper-coloured boulders are characteristic of the top of Boven. They are the remains of eroded layers of volcanic deposits. The red colour is due to the oxidation of the ferromagnesian mineral of the rocks.
Instead of the view to the South with the Quill, we focus on Venus Bay. There are various peaks and hills to discover in Boven Nationalpark, but for your very first visit, we recommend hiking to Venus Bay. While sitting at the rocky shore or on the old mahogany tree trunk, you can watch Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) diving down into the ocean to catch fish. Magnificent Fregatte Birds (Fregata magnificens) cruise along the coastline and during certain times of the year Red-billed (Phaethon aethereus) and White-tailed Tropicbirds (Phaethon leptucus) are common sights. After your birding break, you can decide to explore more of the rolling hills in the Northern terrain.
The whole island of Statia is formed by volcanic activity. The Boven area is more eroded than the dormant volcano The Quill (Take a Minute in Statia 001: Around one million years ago, volcanic activity started. Bergje, meaning little mountain, is the main remnant of this old volcano while Boven and the Gilboa Hills are ancient solidified streams of lava, according to the Hiker‘s Guide of St. Eustatius National Parks (STENAPA).
Even though the section of Boven Nationalpark was formally established in 1997, land-use conflict hindered STENAPA from actively managing this natural treasure of two km2 until 2007. Only then STENAPA created the various hiking paths connecting nature and history so beautifully. This part of the island is the main habitat of the endemic flower „Statia Morning Glory“ (Ipomoea sphenophylla).
Support STENAPA and their work by purchasing a trail tag for 10 USD. Each trail tag is valid for one calendar year. You can get it directly at the STENAPA office, using the opportunity to browse through the brochures, books, cards, souvenirs and more their little shop has to offer. Maybe even book a guided tour to places like the tidal pools with the Boven Nationalpark? Also, Tourist Information, hotels and dive centres sell trail tags.
„Take a Minute in Statia 002: Boven Nationalpark with Venus Bay“ is an invitation to the world to visit this wonderful Caribbean island. At the same time, we‘d like to invite everybody on the island to join the National Park Nature Chase on Statia Day, Wednesday, 16th of November. This „Triathlon“ isn‘t entering Boven Nationalpark, so enjoy the view of this clip and sign up as a single participant, relay team or volunteer to help out with the event. You don‘t want to commit? Just come and cheer all participants on.
The participants experience the marine park swimming, culture and history on the island while biking from Lower Town to the entrance of Boven Nationalpark and then onto the entrance of the Quill Nationalpark where the hiking starts. We are taking part as a relay team for the animal shelter. Yoeri is swimming, Nicki is biking and Jenny running/hiking. Additionally, we have all the love and support from the rest of the volunteers. For the finish at the Quill, they bring the dogs of the animal shelter to celebrate with the team and get to know more nature and animal lovers on this island. STENAPA and the Culture Department have been collaborating on the organization of the second National Parks Nature Chase, held on Statia Day, November 16, 2022. After the morning celebration, this ‘triathlon’ will give people the opportunity to visit all three National Parks across the island in one day.

Upscale eats and the writing is on the… tree! St. Kitts Restaurant Week Day 4
For our fourth day in St. Kitts, we were treated to an incredible meal at the luxurious mountain retreat, Belle Mont Farm. Situated on Kittian Hill, this working farm of 400 acres has stunning views of the Ocean as well Mount Liamuiga, the highest point on the island at 3792 feet.
The property was designed by Bill Bensley, who also created the Four Seasons Tented Camp in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Every detail is perfect and the stone was quarried locally and the team trained local residents to become stone carvers. Community involvement is key whether the people working on site or the guests. Everyone can become a food forager learning about whatever fruit and vegetables are in season. I want to return for the famous farm dinner, hopefully on a full moon!
Our lunch included farm grown Tomato Salad with coconut mozzarella, Dasheen Risotto and fresh from the sea Mahi Mahi with Lime and coconut foam, and farm chicken jambonette with breadfruit chowder. Not only was it an incredible meal, but we also sat outside which was a gallery of views of the mountain and of Bill Bensley's paintings.
I loved the pool, the villas and all the amenities. In your villa, you do not have a television but a large screen that drops down movie style and is controlled by your personal iPad. You can choose to completely detach from busy city life and be drawn into the farm. I drew my name on a leaf when I left, when you return they will find your leaf for you!
After our views from Kittian Hill, we were treated to a stunning vista from the seventh floor of the St. Kitts Marriott. I really enjoyed staying at the Marriott with my large balcony facing the three pools and the ocean. For our last night on the island, we returned to Salt Plage to enjoy the music, food and happening vibe. What an amazing first visit to St. Kitts! July 25 2015
