???????? Battle of Dien Bien Phu: CRATER at A1 HILL to End French Indochina War {Dien Bien Phu, VIETNAM}

Historically, the Battle of Dien Bien Phu and the End of the French Indochina War changed how the colonized Third World was shaped after the Second World War.

The two-month battle in 1954 proved a success for the Vietnamese and once the French were defeated in Vietnam, this was the first victory by a guerrilla unit against a colonizing power.

Nearby A1 Hill, Victory Monument proudly celebrates Vietnam's military triumph and subsequent independence for the country. The city also preserves its history with the Battle of Dien Bien Phu Museum and Military Cemetery where tributes are paid to the fallen heroes who fought for Vietnamese liberation and freedom.

While these are somber grounds, honoring the Battle has become important tourist sites for Dien Bien Phu. Matt visits these sacred grounds during the Tet celebration in Vietnam, the Lunar New Year, and surprisingly the city is much livelier than anticipated.

Questions Answered:
- why is Dien Bien Phu important?
- why were the Vietnamese successful in defeating the colonial French?
- how did Vietnam fit into post-WWII colonialism?
- what is the Tet celebration in Vietnam?
- what are the tourist activities in Dien Bien Phu?

#91 DIEN BIEN PHU - MORE THAN JUST A BOARDER CROSSING TOWN

TRAVEL VLOG #91
DIEN BIEN PHU - LAST DAY IN VIETNAM BEFORE LAOS
MARCH 2017

We took an overnight bus from Sapa to Dien Bien Phu. Most people just change buses and head straight to the boarder but we thought we;d have a little explore first.

We're glad we did as the people in Dien Bien Phu are some of the nicest people we've met in Vietnam. We visited the cemetery and war museum which was the best we've been to in Vietnam and also A1 Hill which was the centre of the French armies head quarters.

There was a festival on during the evening with lots of singing and dancing. We were really glad that we decided to stop here instead of just passing through.

Dien Bien Phu to Sapa, Vietnam

We traveled from Hanoi to dien Bien Phu by plane and then had a driver and automobile waiting to drive across the top part of Vietnam to Sapa. This was a beautiful drive and almost no tourist. Dien Bien Phu was interesting because of its historial significance and of course, Sapa is a wonderful location. This old French hillside village still retains its French charm and the various tribes around make it very colorful.
Bac Ha for the Sunday market is the place to be. So much color and very friendly people. Interesting the loudspeaker came on in the village at 6am telling people to go to the fields to work.

Dien Bien Phu - Sapa.m4v

Dien Bien Phu - Muang Lay

Dien Bien Phu, Vietnam to Muang Ngoi Neua, Laos by bus and boat

Got up at 4:45 this morning to take the bus down into Laos from Dien Bien Phu. There were several other people who were on it who had stayed at our hotel. It was almost entirely full of westerners (4 from the Netherlands, a Russian, a couple Brits, and the two of us, besides the other 2 Americans). My knees were pretty much touching the seat in front of me. I think it might have been the tightest fit in any bus I've ever been in. Tighter than any plane, too. It was an extremely scenic bus ride with lots of mud, rough roads, and remote villages thrown in. There was a bit of roadwork along the way including a couple new bridges going in.

During lunch, we all began to talk about the boat ride. Others were interested and we talked about trying to charter a boat to Muang Ngoi Neua in case there wasn't one going today, as the southbound boat apparently goes infrequently. Turns out a driver was bringing some people up from the river village and was going back anyway, so we got a good rate and he made a chunk of profit. We waited around for the bank to open (at Muang Khua where the bus stops and the boat leaves from) and several of us got money there. There didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to which cards were accepted or how much money you could get. And the ATM outside the bank would work with some kind of proprietary Lao card, I think, but not MasterCard or VISA.

The boat ride was awesome. The breeze was pleasant, so it was comfortable. It rained some, but we didn't get wet (only from some of the rapids!). We paid 100,000 each (about $12.50). It was so worth it. Very beautiful. My girlfriend felt a little sick in the bus (the road was very twisty) and is tired tonight, but feeling okay.

Vietnam by the Book - a new 15 day tour by Rusty Compass

I'm heading out on tour again in October 2018 and 2019. Join me on a 15 day journey through the history, culture and unique beauty of Vietnam, using the works of three authors to help us along our way.

Our journey will take us to Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Dien Bien Phu, Sapa, Hue, My Son, Hoi An and Saigon.

Graham Greene’s The Quiet American, Duong Van Mai Elliott’s Sacred Willow and Nguyen Qui Duc’s Where the Ashes Are, tell three different tales of Vietnam’s modern history. The insights of these authors will give context to this unique travel experience. Our shared reading will help to tell the stories of the places we visit. We’ll travel and read beyond these books too.

If you like books and are looking for a special experience of Vietnam, check out our website over at Old Compass Travel -
