Brussels | Belgium Motorhome Road Trip - | 12 day route and itinerary
The wonderful capital of the Flemish region - Brussels and see sights including the Atomium and Mini-Europe, Grand Place, The Royal Palace, and St Martins Cathedral.
To get to Brussels, we caught the speed train from Ghent St Peters (which took approx. 40 minutes and cost just over €10 return. We have parked up at Urban Gardens campsite in Ghent for 4 days as this is the perfect location to access all the major cities in the Flanders region by train.

The Sas4 Tower is 37 meters high and offers a magnificent view. In clear weather, you can see several kilometres away. The tower has 216 stairs and is easy to enter. Fear of heights or difficulty walking? It gives you an impression of what can be seen on top of the Sas4 Tower, but nothing can match the reality. So climbing the 216 steps is definitely worth it And the condition doesn't get any worse either.

The Round Well
The Ronde Put attracts many birds of prey such as buzzard, sparrowhawk, goshawk, harrier harrier, tree falcon, kestrel, and also the osprey when they migrate. Other birds such as kingfisher, reed bunting, bluethroat, warbler warbler, oriole, and various duck species such as mallard, tufted duck and gadwall also find their place here. Several hundred greylag geese have their permanent home here. Other special animals such as moor frogs, slow worms, viviparous lizards, and dragonflies also feel at home here.
You will find many floating lifts. A drifting house is a floating island of half-decayed plants that remain in a peat lake. Various plant species such as sphagnum mosses, peat fluff, bog bog, and heather colonize this island. With further colonization, bushes and trees will appear on the drift. One then speaks of landing.
The Watering
Originally, the ponds were used as a breeding pond for carp and sturgeon. A large part of the hay meadows was planted with poplars by a match factory. After all, poplar wood is ideal for making matches. Afterwards, the area was set up for hunting.
The area consists of forest and marsh landscapes with ponds. The ponds and wetlands are a huge attraction for waterfowl, frogs, and dragonflies. In and around the water, you can spot many coots, greylag geese, grebes, cormorants, kingfishers, and various duck species, such as mallard, tufted duck, gadwall, shoveler, …. The osprey often comes here to forage during migration.
Pond restoration De Watering
The ponds of De Watering currently look like a real construction site. This is because the managers work hard to ensure that typical plants and animals of the pond environment survive. Nature & Forest has established that valuable species associated with this valuable pond system are disappearing. The works also ensure a renewal of the water supply system, with a controlled use of the precious canal water. The drainage route of the water will be restored to its original canal via the nature reserve, so that the agricultural lands located downstream are protected from this, and the water can be recovered for reuse via the Collateur. Extra measures have been provided for in the assignment due to the presence of the beaver in order to guarantee the manageability of the ponds and to protect the surrounding plots from any calamities. We therefore opt for a beaver-friendly water level in the ponds, for secured rise and fall constructions and for reinforced dykes against beaver digging through.
Walk in peace
Nature is very valuable here, but also very vulnerable. That is why part of the area is not accessible. Hikers can discover the area via the hiking trail that is part of the hiking junction network “Kempense Meren”. There are two birdwatching huts, one of which is wheelchair accessible. In the Watering you can only walk on the path along the highway. It connects to the Reties Goor (de Graaf) and to the nature reserve De Goorbossen in Retie. This is part of the Kempense Lakes hiking network.

Hi! We're Nico (a Belgian) and Jana (a British-Canadian) and we met in a hostel while each solo traveling through New Zealand. We fell in love, bought a van and traveled around the country together. After plans to move to Europe together in April 2020 were derailed by COVID-19, we spent an extra 6 months in New Zealand first in lockdown and then traveling in our van. In September 2020, the borders reopened to EU citizens and flights restarted so we finally made the move to Belgium where we spend our weekends exploring as much of the country as we can.
