Dawlish, Devon (1924)

Ornamental Gardens, Dawlish.

This extract comes from Claude Friese-Greene's 'The Open Road' - originally filmed in 1925/6 and now re-edited and digitally restored by the BFI National Archive. Britain seen in colour for the first time was heralded as a great technical advance for the cinema audience - now we can view a much improved image, but one which still stays true to the principles of the colour process.

The rather haphazard journey from Land's End to John O'Groats creates a series of moving picture postcards. Look out for shots containing the component colours - red and blue-green - such as when a little girl in a red coat and hat walks among peacocks in the grounds of a castle, and three girls with red curly hair pose by the sea at Torquay.

The car is a Vauxhall D-type - considered a sporty model at the time. A long-distance journey by car was a relatively new concept, with none of the amenities en route now taken for granted. The visit to a petrol station shows smoking on the forecourt: no health and safety issues back then! The travelogue ends with a series of recognisable London landmarks. Much remains the same - one major exception being the volume of traffic on the roads. (Jan Faull)

Places to see in ( Dawlish - UK )

Places to see in ( Dawlish - UK )

Dawlish is a town and civil parish in Teignbridge on the south coast of Devon in England, 12 miles from the county town of Exeter. During the 18th century, Dawlish grew from a small fishing port to become a well-known seaside resort. Dawlish has two electoral wards (Central and North East, and the South West).

Dawlish is located at the outlet of a small river, Dawlish Water (also called The Brook), between Permian red sandstone cliffs, and is fronted by a sandy beach with the South Devon Railway sea wall and the Riviera Line railway above. Behind this is a central public park, The Lawn, through which Dawlish Water flows.

Immediately to the south-west of Dawlish is a headland, Lea Mount, with Boat Cove at its foot and Coryton Cove, the furthest part of the beach accessible by the seawall path, behind it. To the north-east, via the beach or seawall, the coast can be followed some 2 km to Langstone Rock and the resort of Dawlish Warren beyond, although this path is blocked at extreme high water.

Dawlish is also known for its black swans (Cygnus atratus), introduced from Western Australia, which live with other exotic waterfowl in a small urban sanctuary on Dawlish Water. After visiting Sidmouth in 1801, Jane Austen spent a long holiday at Dawlish in 1802, later complaining about its particularly pitiful and wretched library.

Dawlish railway station is situated in the town centre next to the beach. It is served by trains to most stations in Devon, and to London and further afield. The line is noted as one of the most memorable stretches of track in Britain for its natural beauty, although at a very high cost to Network Rail as it is one of the most expensive lines to maintain due to the continual battle with sea erosion.

( Dawlish - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Dawlish . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Dawlish - UK

Dawlish Warren - Devon UK - 4K Walking Tour - July 2023

Join us for a walk in Dawlish Warren, Devon, UK. We start our walk on Dawlish Warren seafront. We take a look at the Dawlish Warren Grand Prix Go Karts, walk past Funder Park, through the Dawlish Warren railway tunnel, past the Silly Goose pub then down Dawlish Warren Road and finish our walk by the Welcome Family Holiday Park.

Dawlish Warren is a seaside resort near the town of Dawlish in Teignbridge on the south coast of Devon in England. Dawlish Warren consists almost entirely of holiday accommodation and facilities for holiday-makers especially caravan sites.

Dawlish Warren is located at the mouth of the Exe Estuary opposite Exmouth and has a beach, a National Nature Reserve spanning 506 acres and a golf course, which is classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The renowned sand spit at Dawlish Warren is the location of both the golf course and the nature reserve.

Along with neighbouring Dawlish, this corner of south Devon has a favourable climate, which draws thousands of visitors to the area in summer. Because of this, the Dawlish Warren economy relies heavily on tourism, and in particular on the many caravan and camping parks in the village which add over 15,000 to the local population during the summer months. There are several holiday parks which attract visitors from all over the UK, but in particular the West Midlands and South Wales. The major holiday parks are Welcome, Hazelwood, Cofton, Golden Sands, Dawlish Sands, Peppermint Park, Lady's Mile and Oakcliff. In 2008 Peppermint Park and Golden Sands joined Dawlish Sands as part of Park Holidays UK Caravan Parks. The name 'Peppermint Park' has gone and the site has been rebranded 'Golden Sands'.

Dawlish Warren is served by Dawlish Warren railway station, situated a few minutes from the beach. The station is between Dawlish and Starcross stations and is very busy in the summer.

Dawlish can be reached by a 1.5-mile walk south-west along the South Devon Railway sea wall.

Thanks for watching! We hope you enjoy this Dawlish Warren Walk.
