What are the greenest towns tin the United Kingdom? As many as 7 of the greenest towns in England are among the 10 greenest towns in the UK. This is not surprising at all. England is only being prevented from being equated with the entire United Kingdom. Thus, for records purposes and the sake of clarity, don’t be surprised to find towns and cities in England dominating listings of bests or worsts of towns and cities in the UK.
Other UK towns that slug it out with the towns in England on this list of the 10 greenest towns in Britain are Falkirk in Scotland, Merthyr Tydfil in Wales, and Bridgend also in Wales. It appears other regions of the United Kingdom have something to learn from England about nature and its preservation.
10. Barnsley, England
The first to be considered among the 10 greenest towns in the UK is Barnsley, a large market town and the fourth-largest settlement in South Yorkshire. This town doesn’t allow inappropriate development within its areas and the conditions in building permits are stricter. By doing this, it has been able to preserve its green space.
The River Dearne Valley and Worsbrough Mill Park and reservoir are just two examples of efforts that the town is making to be one of the greenest towns in both England and the entire United Kingdom. As of 2017, it has some 23,050 hectares of green belt which was first defined in 1979. Its rural landscape features encourage recreation and leisure interests.
9. Stafford, England
Stafford, a county town of Staffordshire in the West Midlands, lying about 24 kilometers north of Wolverhampton, 24 kilometers south of Stoke-on-Trent, and 39 kilometers northwest of Birmingham, is the next of the 10 greenest towns in the UK.
The nature reserves in Stafford include Astonfields Balancing Lakes, a local nature reserve of two lakes constructed for flood protection. There’s also Doxey Marshes, a wet grassland habitat about three kilometers northwest of the town center managed by the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. It’s 150 hectares of nature reserve and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It's home to wading birds and wildfowl. Kingsmead Marsh and Radford Meadows are also green spaces in this town.
8. Falkirk, Scotland
Falkirk, a large town in the Central Lowlands of Scotland. The town which is 37.5 kilometers northwest of Edinburgh and 33 kilometers northeast of Glasgow is doing great in maintaining a wide range of greenspace.
It has an initiative called Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN). The unrivaled network aims at transforming Central Scotland into a place where the environment adds value to the economy and people’s lives are enriched by its quality. GSGN has no peer in Europe as a green space initiative that has been embedded in all relevant plans, policies, and strategies. The result of this is seen in the green revolution in the town.
7. Daventry, England
Yet another town on this list is Daventry, a town that is close to the border with Warwickshire with a population of 25,026 as of 2011. As the sixth-largest town in Northamptonshire, it’s one of the 10 greenest towns in the UK.

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

Towcester, the Roman town of Lactodorum, is an affluent market town in south Northamptonshire, England. The town is approximately 8 miles (12.9 km) south-west of Northampton and about 10 miles (16.1 km) north-west of Milton Keynes, the nearest main towns. Oxford is about 30 miles (48.3 km) south-west via the A43 road, M40 motorway and A34 road. The A43 now bypasses the town to the north but the A5 road still passes through the town centre. This still carries much traffic in the north-south direction which may be bypassed to the west with the possibility of expansion of the town.
Towcester used to be within the parliamentary constituency of Daventry. However, since the 2010 general election it forms part of the South Northamptonshire constituency. The town has good shopping facilities with the four major supermarket chains of Waitrose, Tesco, Co-op and Aldi also B & M Stores and Poundstretcher have recently opened branches. There is also a range of smaller shops and numerous restaurants of various cuisines and national chains such as Costa and McDonald's. All the major British banks are present (except HSBC, which closed September 2015) and Nationwide Building Society are present, as is a main post office.
St. Lawrence's C of E Church, stands in the middle of the town. It has a 12th century Norman transitional ground plan and foundation, probably laid over a Saxon 10th century stone building. Its ecclesiastical heritage may well relate back to Roman times as St Lawrence was patron saint of the Roman legions. The building was reconstructed in the perpendicular style 1480–85 when the church tower was added. Permission to quarry stone for this restoration from Whittlewood Forest was granted by Edward IV and later confirmed by Richard III on his way towards Leicestershire and his death at the Battle of Bosworth Field.
Towcester lays claim to being the oldest town in Northamptonshire and possibly, because of the antiquity of recent Iron Age finds in the town, to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the country. There is evidence that it was settled by humans since the Mesolithic era (middle stone age). There is also evidence of Iron Age burials in the area.

Northampton is the county town of Northamptonshire in the East Midlands of England. It lies on the River Nene, about 67 miles north-west of London and 50 miles south-east of Birmingham.
Northampton rose to national significance with the establishment of Northampton Castle, which was an occasional royal residence and regularly hosted the Parliament of England. Medieval Northampton had many churches, monasteries and the University of Northampton, which were all enclosed by the town walls. It was granted its first town charter by King Richard I in 1189 and its first mayor was appointed by King John in 1215. The town is also the site of two medieval battles; the Battle of Northampton (1264) and the second in 1460.
Northampton's royal connection languished in the modern period; the town supported Parliament (the Roundheads) in the English Civil War, which culminated in King Charles II ordering the destruction of the town walls and most of the castle. The town also suffered the Great Fire of Northampton (1675) which destroyed most of the town. It was soon rebuilt and grew rapidly with the industrial development of the 18th century. Northampton continued to grow following the creation of the Grand Union Canal and the arrival of the railways in the 19th century, becoming an industrial centre for footwear and leather manufacture.
After the World Wars, Northampton's growth was limited until it was designated as a New Town in 1968, accelerating development in the town. Northampton unsuccessfully applied for unitary status in 1996 and city status in 2000; the town continues to expand with many areas undergoing urban renewal.

We want to begin with Swindon. This is a large town in Wiltshire in South West England. Swindon lies between Bristol and Reading, 56 kilometers to the west and the same distance to the east. However, Swindon is 114 kilometers to the west of London. As of 2011, Swindon’s built-up area has a population of 185,600. This is one of the 8 greenest towns in England.
Swindon has a lot of green spaces, charming and beautiful enough to stand among the greenest towns in the UK. The Lydiard Country Park is a charming historic estate on the western edge of the town set in 260 acres of parkland around a wonderful lake. The town also has Stanton Country Park, a hidden gem and holder of a Green Flag award on 36 hectares of parkland housing the lake, woodland, and grassland and home to a surprising array of flora and fauna. We would also love to mention Queen's Park which is close to the center of Swindon. It has a large lake of around 2 acres. Coate Water Country Park is another beautiful country park in the town. This fantastic community resource provides a perfect setting including a children’s playground and summer splash pool in addition to an all-year café.

What are the areas with the least child poverty rate in the UK? Child poverty is one of the major and growing social problems in the United Kingdom. According to UNICEF, children are living in poverty when they experience deprivation of not only the material resources but also of spiritual and emotional resources required to stay alive, thrive, and develop. Such children are unable to enjoy their basic human rights, achieve their full potential, and live as full and equal members of society.
This essentially means that such children are not provided with enough food and facilities to sustain a healthy living. Due to multiple socio-economic factors, child poverty is increasing with each passing day. However, some areas of the UK are faring better in this regard. Here are the 10 areas with the least child poverty rates in the UK.
10. West Northamptonshire
West Northamptonshire is a unitary authority area in England. It has a total population of 94,490 and covers an area of 394 square miles. It is obviously the area with the lowest population density on this list. The child poverty rate is 12% which seems manageable.
Efforts are being made in Towcester, Daventry, and other regions to lift those kids out of poverty. It has been discovered that the reason for child poverty in West Northamptonshire is that many children are born to or are raised in out-of-work households. Others children living in poverty in the area are in lone-parent households.
9. St Albans
St Albans is one of the cathedral cities in the United Kingdom. It’s about 19 miles from London. It has a total population of 82,146 and covers an area of 11.7 square miles. The child poverty rate in this region is among the 10 least. Only 13.7% of children in St Albans are living in poverty.
The residents had a tough choice to make during the last winter. A lot of families across there were living in fuel poverty. The latest official figures for the areas indicate that 9.3% of households live in fuel poverty. Besides having no fuel to produce energy to heat homes, food prices have also increased. Children in this kind of household are living in poverty.
8. Waverley
Waverley is a local government district that has also been granted the status of a borough. The main towns of the borough include Godalming, Farnham, and Haslemere. It has a total population of 126,328 and has a total land area of 133.2 square miles. Child poverty rates in Waverley are 12.8%, lower than the national average of 16.6%.
One reason for child poverty in Waverley is the inequality in the country. Most of the families living in this borough lack the essentials of life that are taken for granted in other boroughs. Thanks to vocal activists such as a group led by footballer Marcus Rashford and the opposition party, attention is now being given to the plight of the kids in Waverly and things are improving.
7. The Isles of Scilly
The Isles of Scilly is an island chain located at the Southwestern tip of Cornwall, a ceremonial county of England. This group of islands has a total population of 2,224 and covers a land area of approximately 6.3 square miles. Life on islands is fairly simple and people of this region like to work out. The economy of the area is largely dependent on tourism alongside agriculture. The child poverty rate is lower than the average poverty rate for the country. The child poverty rate is at 11.5% which is more than 5% less than the national average.

FLORE: West Northamptonshire Parish #1 of 166
Thatched cottages are a part of rural life in places in this country. Some though have more than others and in our first trip into Northamptonshire on this channel we get to see a lot of thatch work! This is a village that's crammed full of them, and interestingly, one of them used to be the ancestral home of John Adams - the second president on the USA.
On a political theme, this village has itself a project going on which has been a thing since 2012, which involves flying the flags of the Commonwealth outside the Millennium Hall in rotation. It's just one of the many reasons to come visit this place, and it sure isn't short of things for you to have a look at!
Take Brodie Lodge playing field, situated next to a wide open expanse that is the Nene Valley. Speaking of the Nene, you'll find a national trail here in the form of the Nene Way - it runs alongside the river for almost the whole of its course and cuts through this village and the churchyard of the Saxon 12th century church which stands to the South of the historic core.
That core is protected by way of a Conservation Area, and speaking of protection, the village is now protected by a new link road which bypasses it, meaning traffic no longer rushes through the main street on its way to the M1 which is situated just to the North.
I think you'll agree when you watch this, it's not a bad life if you live in FLORE.

Southam is a small market town and civil parish in the Stratford-on-Avon district of Warwickshire, England. Southam is on the River Stowe (called 'The Brook' by many locals), which flows from Napton-on-the-Hill and joins Warwickshire's River Itchen at Stoneythorpe, just outside the town. The town is about 7.5 miles (12 km) east of Leamington Spa, about 10 miles (16 km) from Rugby and Daventry, 13 miles (21 km) south of Coventry and 14 miles (23 km) north of Banbury.
Southam was a Royal manor until AD 998, when Ethelred the Unready granted it to Earl Leofwine. When Coventry Priory was founded in 1043, Leofwine's son Leofric, Earl of Mercia granted Southam to it. The Domesday Book records the manor as Sucham. The Priory, which in the 12th century became the first Coventry Cathedral, kept Southam until the 16th century when it surrendered all its estates to the Crown in the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The current Manor House is Grade II * listed and dates from the early 17th century.
Southam's Holy Well, in the picturesque Stowe river valley, is a Grade II listed building and scheduled Ancient Monument, and was first recorded in the year 998. The Well was used in medieval times by local monks and for hundreds of years as the town's principal water supply. Water from a natural mineral spring feeds the semi-circular Well and pours through the mouths of carved stone gargoyles into the river. The water from the Well was said to cure eye complaints.
The London and North Western Railway completed its Weedon to Marton Junction Line in 1895 and opened Southam and Long Itchington station on it 2 miles (3 km) north of Southam. British Railways closed the station to passengers in 1958 and goods in 1965. Southam was the seat of Southam Rural District from 1894 until 1974, when under the Local Government Act 1972 it was made part of Stratford-on-Avon District.
Southam was in the parliamentary constituency of Stratford-on-Avon until the boundary changes approved by Parliament in June 2007 when it became part of the new constituency of Kenilworth and Southam. The constituency was first contested in the United Kingdom general election, 2010. RAF Southam, about 0.6 miles (1 km) east of the town, was a World War II airfield. It was opened in 1940 and closed at the end of 1944. It was a training base and a relief landing ground. Southam's history is commemorated in Southam's Cardall Collection.
Southam is between Leamington Spa and Daventry on the A425 road and between Coventry and Banbury on the A423 road. The A426 road connects it to Rugby. Southam is about 15 miles (24 km) from Stratford-upon-Avon, birthplace of William Shakespeare. About 8 miles (13 km) from Southam is the M40 motorway, though the town is surprisingly not indicated. The nearest railway stations are Leamington Spa, Rugby and Banbury.
