What to do in Belgium?
The Gileppe dam is a mighty beautiful building in the Ardennes and is located near the town of Jalhay.
The reservoir, Lac la Gilleppe, has a capacity of no less than 25 million cubic meters of water. The huge dam is one of the oldest concrete dams in Europe. Construction started in 1869 and lasted until 1878. On July 28 of that year, the dam was opened by King Leopold II. In 1971 the dam was raised to its current height.
History
In the 19th century, the dam was built to ensure the water supply for Verviers. Verviers was the center of the wool industry in Belgium. Initially, the industry's water source was the Vesdre River, which proved insufficient; moreover, The returned water was so polluted that it destroyed the fish population and was blamed for the spread of malaria downstream. The construction began in 1868 and continued for ten years.
The Lion
On the top of the dam stands a monumental lion. The sculpture was created by Belgian artist Antoine-Félix Bouré. The Lion is formed of 183 blocks of sandstone from the Sûre valley in Luxembourg, it weighs 300 tonnes and stands 13.5 meters tall. In 1970 the lion was dismantled, during work to heighten the dam. It took 40 days to restore the lion after the dam construction was completed.
Facts
The total height of the dam is 64 meters, before the elevation it was 47 meters.
The volume of the wall is 1.4 million m³ of concrete and 1.2 million m³ of riprap. The maximum capacity is 26,430,000 m³, of which 24,000,000 m³ usable capacity.
The surface of the lake is equal to 130 ha. It is fed by the Gileppe, Louba and Soor streams, which together form a catchment area of 54 km².

The Gileppe dam is a popular place to visit as it is a large area that is open for tourists. The tour has a stop at the visitor center where you can buy souvenirs like coffee, mugs and postcards as well as food and drinks. You can also buy a book about the dam and how it works or you can buy a souvenir from the souvenir shop located on the dam site. You will also be able to find a small exhibition on the history of the dam and how it was built. It also has a small café and a gift shop. The museum is open from May until October and there is also the opportunity to take the tour to the dam.

Damme (Belgie)
Damme is een plaats en stad in de Belgische provincie West-Vlaanderen. De stad is een toeristische trekpleister met veel oude gebouwen. Deelgemeenten inbegrepen telt Damme bijna 11.000 inwoners, die Dammenaars[1] worden genoemd.
Vanaf midden 11e eeuw verzandde de waddenzee voor Brugge geleidelijk, maar in de eerste helft van de 12e eeuw kreeg Brugge nogmaals een directe verbinding met de Noordzee: overstromingen hadden een diepe en brede geul achtergelaten, het Zwin. Aan het Zwin ontstond de haven van Letterswerve (toltarief Diederik van Elzas circa 1160). Op het einde van de vaargeul werd later ter beveiliging van het hinterland door Filips van de Elzas een dwarsdam gebouwd in het jaar 1168. Achter de dam ontstond een nieuwe haven, Damme (stadsrechten circa 1180). Damme behoort hiermee tot de reeks van de havensteden die door de Vlaamse graven Diederik van de Elzas en Filips van de Elzas ter bevordering van het economische leven langs de Noordzeekust gesticht werden. Andere steden die tot deze reeks behoren zijn Grevelingen, Mardijk, Duinkerke, Nieuwpoort en Biervliet.[2] In plaats van getijdevaart konden de grotere schepen, vooral de kogge, nu tot dicht bij Brugge varen. Mits overlading in Damme op binnenschepen was Brugge nog steeds bereikbaar.
In de 13e eeuw werd de Lieve gegraven, een kanaal dat Damme met Gent verbond. In 1213 vond hier de Slag bij Damme plaats, tussen de legers van Engeland en Frankrijk.
Langs het Zwin ontstonden geleidelijk ook kleinere havens: Monnikerede (al lang verdwenen), Hoeke, Muide (nu Sint Anna ter Muiden) en ten slotte Sluis. Door verdere verzanding van het Zwin verloor Damme haar rol als haven die werd overgenomen door Sluis.
Het huwelijk tussen Karel de Stoute en Margaretha van York werd in 1468 hier voltrokken.
In de 17e eeuw was Damme een versterkte stad, met een typisch stervormig grondplan. Het was een belangrijke verdedigingsplaats met garnizoen tot de 19e eeuw. De vestingwerken zijn nu gedeeltelijk verdwenen, maar het grondplan is in de omliggende polders nog duidelijk zichtbaar vanop de toren van de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk.
Hier werd ook Tijl Uilenspiegel geboren, de held uit de roman van Charles de Coster.

Het middeleeuwse stadhuis, een mooi voorbeeld van Brabantse gotiek
De middeleeuwse Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk waarvan de bouw in de dertiende eeuw in vroeggotische stijl werd opgestart. Door het toenemend belang van Damme werd in de volgende eeuw de huidige hallenkerk aangebouwd. In 1578 werd de kerk geplunderd door de geuzen. Herstelling volgde tussen 1621 en 1626. Transept, zijbeuken en middenbeuk werden in 1725, samen met de bouwvallige spits afgebroken omdat het onderhoud onbetaalbaar werd. Men moest hiervoor wel toelating vragen aan de Grote Raad van Mechelen. De kerk werd opnieuw gerestaureerd, eerst tussen 1890 en 1895 en later tussen 1902 en 1904. Het pleister werd van de baksteen verwijderd.
Het standbeeld van Jacob van Maerlant voor het stadhuis. Hij ligt begraven in een blinde zerk in de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk. Niet hij zou er onder liggen, alleen zijn lijk, zo redeneerde hij.[3]
Damse Vaart (2006)
De Stadswallen van Damme, resterende stadsomwalling en natuurgebied.
De Damse Vaart, afgelijnd met bomen, verbindt Brugge met Damme en loopt verder naar Sluis. Het werd onder Napoleon uitgegraven. De vaart heeft nu geen enkele economische betekenis meer. De boot Lamme Goedzak, naar een karakter uit de roman over Tijl Uilenspiegel, brengt toeristen van Brugge naar Damme. Wanneer de vaart in de winter dichtvriest, is het mogelijk van Brugge naar Sluis te schaatsen wat dan ook door vele toeristen wordt gedaan.
Het Uilenspiegelmuseum brengt 5 eeuwen Uilenspiegel in beeld. Sinds de 17de eeuw heeft Damme een sterke Uilenspiegeltraditie. Als symbool van de Vlaamse volksziel, ontembare geus en fratsenmaker, dwaalde hij er met Nele en Lamme Goedzak rond. In het museum kan men aan de hand van kopieën van handschriften, 16de-eeuwse drukken, schilderijen, bibliofiele uitgaven, prenten, beeldhouwwerken, geplaatst in hun cultuurhistorische context, met deze verschillende gezichten van Uilenspiegel kennismaken.

Damme é um município belga, localizado a 6 km de Brugge. O município é formado pela cidade de Damme e por outros vilarejos nos arredores. Esta é a parte flamenga da Bélgica (Flandres). Não estava nos planos filmar este local, pois o caminho era de passagem... mas uma bela via verde, um canal cheio de moinhos, uma cidadezinha charmosa no caminho ganharam meu coração!
