Explore the Gems of Haddington: 5 Fascinating Attractions You Can't Miss

Hello and welcome to my channel where we explore chunks of Scottish history this episode will be full of it, thanks to the lovely people of this Scottish jewel called Haddington. Today I will show you 5 main places, that you can easily visit.

The first one is One of the two main streets in Haddington, Haddington’s High Street is an excellent place for Shopping, have to chat with locals, grabbing an ice cream or just enjoying a moment in this beautiful town. The history of this town was dating from the 6th century AD and it became part of Scotland in the 10th Century.

Second place to visit is stunning Lennoxlove house, that sits just on the outskirts of Haddington. Lennoxlove house is home of the duke of Hamilton built in the 14th century. Lennoxlove House is an intriguing mixture of time periods, with 18th-century Palladian and Victorian elegance blended with the earlier 14th-century tower house. The house also acts as a showcase for one of Britain's great art collections, featuring portraits, fine furniture, and ceramics. Much of the collection was brought here from Hamilton Palace

St. Marys Parish Church

3rd gem of this beautiful town is ST. Mary's Parish Church and I can tell you, I was not expecting it to be full of exciting history. Thanks to Janet, a local volunteer I had a chance to film it for you. Thank you Janet appreciate it.

Just outside of St. Mary's Parish Church lies the historic Nungate Bridge – known for its majestic stone bricks and tranquil atmosphere.
This attraction is a stone’s throw from St Mary’s Church, and it’s a great place to stop, relax, and watch the swans and ducks of Haddington frolicking in the River Tyne. It was also the punishment site, as criminals would regularly be hanged from the bridge!
From its green, you’re treated to a memorable skyline of town churches and buildings and the complex history and outstanding architecture that make this bridge an attraction you must see while in Haddington.

Old Photographs Dalkeith Midlothian Scotland

Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Dalkeith, Scottish Gaelic: Dail Cheith, a town in Midlothian. The town is split into four distinct areas: Dalkeith proper with its town centre and historic core, with Eskbank to its west and Woodburn to its east. Eskbank is the well heeled district of Dalkeith with many large Victorian and newer houses. To the south of Eskbank is Newbattle with its abbey. Woodburn is a working class council estate. Dalkeith is the main administrative centre for Midlothian. It is twinned with Jarnac, France. One of the earliest historical references to Dalkeith is found in the Chronicles of Jean Froissart who stayed at Dalkeith Castle for fifteen days. He wrote of the Battle of Otterburn and the death of James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas. In 1650, Oliver Cromwell's army came to Dalkeith. His officer General George Monck, was Commander in Scotland, and the government of the country was based out of Dalkeith castle. In the 17th century, Dalkeith had one of Scotland's largest markets in its exceptionally broad High Street. In 1831, Dalkeith was linked to Edinburgh by a railway line that transported coal, minerals, and agricultural produce. St David's Church in Dalkeith. is a Roman Catholic Parish church founded in 1854 by Lady Cecil, the wife of John Kerr, 7th Marquess of Lothian and daughter of Charles Chetwynd-Talbot, 2nd Earl Talbot. After she converted to Catholicism, Lady Cecil of Lothian decided to build a church for the local Catholic population. Joseph Hansom was the church architect and building started in 1853. On 21 May 1854, the church opened and a Father Mackay was the first parish priest. In 1858, he was replaced by a Father J. S. McCorry. In 1860, Lady Cecil invited the Society of Jesus to serve the parish. In 1944, the Jesuits left the parish and handed over administration of the church to the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh who continue to serve the congregation. Robert Smith, born 1722, died February 11, 1777, he was a Scottish born American architect who was based in Philadelphia. Smith's work includes buildings such as Carpenters' Hall, St. Peter's Church, and the steeple on Christ Church. These structures constituted the greater part of the city's early skyline. Other works include Nassau Hall at Princeton University and the Public Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia. He was born in Dalkeith Parish, Midlothian, into a family that included many masons. As a young man he apprenticed in the building trades, and emigrated to America, either directly from Scotland or via London, England, it is unknown, in late 1748.

Everything You Need to Know About Dalkeith: A Comprehensive Guide to Scotland's Hidden Gem

Hello and welcome to my new video where we dive into the history of beautiful Dalkeith. Please share this video with friends if you like it and I earn your subscription today thank you.

Now you are looking at Dalkeith Orangery built around 1832 and originally used to grow exotic fruit for a Duke of Dalkeith's palace. This symbol of wealth has been carved from sandstone and around it, you can find an old amphitheatre area with a beautiful horse statue installation related to nearby stables.

Crossing the newly renovated stables which is an ideal place to enjoy your coffee I head to the Dalkeith Palace.

In the 12th century, a castle was built by the Grahams on this prominent and easily defended site near the junction of the North and South river Esk. It was the scene of sieges and royal visits. This palace has been turned into a Scottish Renaissance palace locally known as Lions Den in the 1570s. Imagine this building surrounded by water as the area has been flooded as many defence sites in these times. The house is now known as Dalkeith Palace due to a succession of royal visitors including King George IV, Queen Victoria and King Edward VII.

There are so many places to visit in Dalkeith, and after you check out the beautiful corn exchange building which has been a busy part of local fascinating history.
After you pass the burns monument - a victorian cast iron fountain you come across one of the local hidden gems.

site of This local parish church has been place of worship since the 11th century and the present building dates to the early 15th century. I was fortunate enough and with the permission of the local pastor, I was able to take a look inside. Don't miss this spot as is an ideal place to finish a long day of exploring local heritage.

Scotland with Great Rail Journeys

Scotland is, undoubtedly, unmatched in terms of scenery and tradition. The contrasting cities of Edinburgh, filled with elegant buildings crowned by the ancient Edinburgh Castle, and Glasgow, filled with marvellous modern wonders, are in themselves fabulous to explore, whilst the wild and wonderful highlands and islands are breathtaking to behold.

A favourite of Great Rail Journeys, we take our customers to all the best places in Scotland. Our tours usually start in Edinburgh, where you can wonder up the famous Royal Mile, or perhaps immerse yourself in the local culture with a trip to the Edinburgh Tattoo. From here, you travel on a line that is consistently voted one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world: the West Highland Line. Sometimes travelling on board The Jacobite, other times on Scotland’s excellent ScotRail service, this incredible journey is certainly not one to be missed. As well as this line, we also travel on the Kyle Line, the Strathspey Railway, and on the Cairngorm Mountain Railway, to see this awe-inspiring country from its best angle.

Julian Appleyard takes you through some of our favourite Scottish tours in this video, describing the unmatched scenery, incredible rail journeys, and of course the excellent accommodation and food that are designed to enthral and delight our customers.

For more information on our tours, their itineraries and prices, be sure to take a look at our website at or give us a ring on 01904 521936.

Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Edinburgh, Scotland was certainly not on my list when I was in London. After giving it a lot of thought finally, I decided…..why not?. Since I was in London for a good 1 week and I wanted to make the most of it. This trip was a quick tour of Edinburgh and I managed to squeeze in as many places as I could.
The most memorable part of the trip for me was the mesmerizing victorian structures and the beautiful lush green landscape. I am not a big fan of cities or modern buildings. Ancient architecture, ruins, and the history behind them is what fascinates me the most.
Although I am well aware that there was a lot of stuff I missed but this what I could manage in our 3-day trip and I must say it was wonderful. I hope you will like and enjoy my small photo essay in this beautiful country.

Places to see in ( Edinburgh - UK ) Portobello Beach

Places to see in ( Edinburgh - UK ) Portobello Beach

Portobello is a coastal suburb of Edinburgh. Once known as a beach resort, Portobello Beach is located three miles (5 km) to the east of the city centre, facing the Firth of Forth, in eastern central Scotland. Although historically Portobello was a town in its own right, and is often seen as such by its inhabitants, it is now a residential suburb of Edinburgh, with a promenade fronting on to the wide sand beach. Portobello Beach lies between the suburbs of Joppa and Craigentinny.

The 21st century has seen a visible change along the Promenade: the kayaking and sailing clubs hold annual skiff races, beach volleyball is well established outside Portobello swimming baths, and the beach is home to occasional art installations by arts group 'Big Things on the Beach', while the now iconic 'Cressida' octopus sculpture is a permanent feature that is submerged every high tide. Amongst other examples of the changing nature of Portobello are August's Big Beach Busk and Portobello Village Fair, as well as the monthly Portobello Market in Rosefield Park. Most recently, in October 2016, Portobello became the first urban community in Scotland to register a Community Right to Buy after the 2016 expansion of land reform to cover urban areas too.

Portobello is served by Lothian Buses, which provides eleven services to the area, continuing towards Joppa and Eastfield, or down Brighton Place to the Jewel or Royal Infirmary, or from Kings Road to Craigentinny. Portobello's first railway station was initially served by the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway. The Portobello (E&DR) railway station operated from 1832 until 1846, when it was replaced by the Portobello (NBR) railway station operated by the North British Railway. The station closed in 1964 as a result of the Beeching cuts.

The building of Portobello Lido in 1933, and of a pool equipped with the first wave-making machine in Scotland three years later, helped to revive the area for a while. Portobello Sands were used at that time by the Edinburgh Light Horse for drill practice. Walter Scott was their quartermaster, and in 1802 while riding in a charge he was kicked by a horse and confined to his lodgings for three days.

( Edinburgh - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Edinburgh . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Edinburgh - UK
