10 Best Places to Live in Northern Ireland

What are the best cities to live in Northern Ireland? We don’t often hear about Northern Ireland as much as we do the three other provinces because it’s the least discussed. If the 4 nations making the kingdom are ranked in order of popularity, we could go like England, Scotland, and, Wales. That’s why many people don’t have an idea of what living in Northern Ireland, the fourth province of the UK is. This time, we want to discuss the 10 best places to live in Northern Ireland.
This will prove that the part of Ireland that remained in the UK since 1921 is not faring badly at all. Please enjoy the discussion about the best places to live in Northern Ireland.
10. Newtownards
Newtownards is a town, townland, and civil parish in County Down. It’s not far from Strangford Lough, another one of the best places to live in Northern Ireland that would be discussed later. Newtownards is at the northernmost tip of Strangford Lough. It is also 10 miles east of Belfast on the Ards Peninsula.
When Newtownards hit the headline on July 17, 2021, it was about the townland of Ballywatticock toward Mount Stewart, where temperature peaked 31.2 °C at 15:40. Besides that, it has a very low crime rate. The town has a lot of beautiful spots that can add colors to the quality of life. Places such as Movilla Abbey, Somme Heritage Center, and Mount Stewart attract people to this town. The town’s residents are also entertained by sporting activities such as rugby, cricket, football, and motor racing. It is one of the best places to live in Northern Ireland.
9. Fermanagh
Ireland's Lakeland County of Fermanagh is the next of the 10 best places to live in Northern Ireland. It’s one of the six counties of the region, bordering the Republic. The county is renowned for its boating and fishing. Once a legendary dry plain, Fermanagh was believed to have magic well at its center with widely held tales of two lovers. Of course, the story around it makes the county. The lakes of Lough Erne stretching through 50 miles over the county were believed to result from bubbles from the water.
If you live in Fermanagh, you’ll be living in the roots of some famous people, including writer Rudyard Kipling and former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and Ulysses Grant. Enniskillen, which we shall talk about later, is the county town of Fermanagh. You don’t generally hear about crime here and the cozy place has enough amenities.
8. Ballycastle
Let’s next consider Ballycastle, a small seaside town in County Antrim. Deriving its name from the Irish expression “Baile an Chaistil,” the “town of the castle” is on the north-easternmost coastal tip of the region of the United Kingdom. Its harbor plays host to the ferry to Rathlin Island quite visible from the coast.
Anyone living in Northern Ireland and desires a harbor town to live near the coast should consider living in Ballycastle. If you’ve ever heard anything about the best places to live in Northern Ireland, you’ll realize that Ballycastle is frequently mentioned in such lists. According to The Sunday Times, this seaside town is one of five places in Northern Ireland considered the best places to live in Britain. The publication crowns it as actually the best place to live in the province. It receives accolades for offering a better quality of life to the majority of the residents in areas of education, health, crime control, and house prices.

BELFAST City Guide | Northern Ireland | Travel Guide

Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland and one of the most popular travel hubs in the United Kingdom. Around 2.5 million tourists visit Belfast each year.
Belfast is split by the Peace Wall, a physical barrier between the predominantly Protestant and unionist area of East Belfast, and the predominantly Catholic and nationalist area of West Belfast. The Troubles, a time of sectarian warfare and brutality in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to the late 1990s, are responsible for this separation.

Round Tower in Antrim Town - County Antrim Northern Ireland

Antrim town has a nearly complete medieval stone round tower that is easy to go and visit. Sadly there is no way into it - but you can walk all around and check it out.

Stepping into the history of Northern Ireland and getting to know more about the country happens through visiting all the different historical places that will reveal part of this history. Castles, towers, museum, and all the old buildings scattered all around the country are always worth the visit for the experience they will provide for visiting the place and the information they will pass over.

The Round Tower in Antrim is one of those old buildings which help in offering some historical information related to Northern Ireland and even though visitors are not allowed to get inside in order to check how it actually looks and feels like from the inside, they could always get the chance to walk around the whole building and see the history from outside.

Antrim Round Tower and Witch's Stone are known to be reminders of Antrim's ancient monastic settlement. This tower which was built back in the 10th century and the main reason behind its appearance was to serve as a bell-tower for protection from raiders and is locally known as The Steeple. This tower is 28 meters long and is considered one of its kind in all of Ireland - enough to explain why it is a special one to be visited by us.

Since visiting the place will not require an entrance to the tower itself from the inside but will be all about visiting the place from the outside and checking the whole thing just from out there, people are allowed to visit it all year long and they aren't asked for any fees as well; it is free for entrance.

According to the historic description of this Antrim Round Tower, it was mentioned that in the entrance of the tower, there was a device in open stonework that resembles a Maltese cross - this actually helped in strengthening the idea that these towers have been erected in the Christian period.

In addition to serving as a bell tower and at the same time being used to prevent invaders and keep them away, this tower was also considered a good option for keeping the important things in a safe place during the times of trouble - giving different other beneficial uses for the tower and different reasons why it was built in the first place.

The Round Tower in Antrim town is one of the different Irish towers which are visited all year long by the different tourists who come to the country to explore its beautiful destinations. There are other different examples which we have been to and visited before and which we could recommend; there is Scrabo Tower that is located in Newtownards in county Down ( and that comes in addition to the old castles which are also considered from the historical old places that are visited in Northern Ireland and which some of them might be seen as towers when in fact they are not.

Being in Antrim means that there are different other places and touristic attractions that you should pass by and visit ( From those which are considered the most famous, there is Antrim Castle Gardens ( which is also considered different when it comes to the occasions such as Christmas. There is also the Knockagh Monument which is also very famous ( along with Ballycastle which is located in county Antrim (

During our visit to Antrim Round Tower, we were so excited while rounding this place and getting the chance to see this old tower and inspect the way it looks like, we were somewhat disappointed that we were not allowed to get inside and see how it all goes from inside there, but we were satisfied enough with reaching the place and wandering a little bit around it.

If you are going to be in Antrim or even anywhere else that is near, you should definitely head to Antrim Round Tower and maybe take a couple of pictures there - you will never regret it. This is one of the most important historical flags of Antrim town in county Antrim, Northern Ireland, and that is one of the reasons why we always recommend it along with some of the other attractions like the castle gardens for those who will be around the area.

Belfast is Northern Ireland’s capital. It was the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, which famously struck an iceberg and sunk in 1912. This legacy is recalled in the renovated dockyards' Titanic Quarter, which includes the Titanic Belfast, an aluminium-clad museum reminiscent of a ship’s hull, as well as shipbuilder Harland & Wolff’s Drawing Offices and the Titanic Slipways, which now host open-air concerts.

Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, the second largest on the island of Ireland, and the heart of the tenth largest Primary Urban Area in the United Kingdom. Belfast was a centre of the Irish linen, tobacco-processing, rope-making and shipbuilding industries: in the early 20th century, Harland and Wolff, which built the RMS Titanic, was the world's biggest and most productive shipyard. Belfast played a key role in the Industrial Revolution, and was a global industrial centre until the latter half of the 20th century. It has sustained a major aerospace and missiles industry since the mid 1930s. Industrialisation and the inward migration it brought made Belfast Ireland's biggest city at the beginning of the 20th century.

Today, Belfast remains a centre for industry, as well as the arts, higher education, business, and law, and is the economic engine of Northern Ireland. The city suffered greatly during the Troubles, but latterly has undergone a sustained period of calm, free from the intense political violence of former years, and substantial economic and commercial growth. Additionally, Belfast city centre has undergone considerable expansion and regeneration in recent years, notably around Victoria Square.

Belfast is served by two airports: George Best Belfast City Airport in the city, and Belfast International Airport 15 miles (24 km) west of the city. Belfast is a major port, with commercial and industrial docks dominating the Belfast Lough shoreline, including the Harland and Wolff shipyard, and is listed by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) as a global city.
