Portsmouth is a port city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire on the south coast of England. Located mainly on Portsea Island, 110 km south-west of London and 31 km south-east of Southampton, it is the United Kingdom's only island city.
The city's history can be traced to Roman times. A significant naval port for centuries, Portsmouth has the world's oldest dry dock and was England's first line of defence during the French invasion in 1545. Special Palmerston Forts were built in 1859 in anticipation of another invasion from continental Europe. By the early-19th century, Portsmouth was the most heavily fortified city in the world, and was considered the world's greatest naval port at the height of the British Empire throughout Pax Britannica. The world's first mass production line was set up in the city, making it the most industrialised site in the world. During the Second World War, the city was a pivotal embarkation point for the D-Day landings and was bombed extensively in the Portsmouth Blitz, which resulted in the deaths of 930 people. In 1982, the city housed the entirety of the attacking forces in the Falklands War. Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia left the city to oversee the transfer of Hong Kong in 1997, which marked for many the end of the empire.
Portsmouth is one of the world's best known ports. HMNB Portsmouth is the largest dockyard for the Royal Navy and is home to two-thirds of the UK's surface fleet. The city is home to some famous ships, including HMS Warrior, the Tudor carrack Mary Rose and Horatio Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory. The former HMS Vernon naval shore establishment has been redeveloped as a retail park known as Gunwharf Quays. Portsmouth is among the few British cities with two cathedrals: the Anglican Cathedral of St Thomas and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St John the Evangelist. The waterfront and Portsmouth Harbour are dominated by the Spinnaker Tower, one of the United Kingdom's tallest structures at 560 feet. Nearby Southsea is a seaside resort with a pier amusement park and medieval castle.
Portsmouth International Port is a commercial cruise ship and ferry port for international destinations. The port is the second busiest in the United Kingdom after Dover, handling around three million passengers a year. The University of Portsmouth enrols 23,000 students and is ranked among the world's best modern universities. Portsmouth is also the birthplace of author Charles Dickens and engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

What are the most miserable towns in the United Kingdom? Many of the towns in the United Kingdom are not doing too badly in terms of basic amenities. The quality of life in those towns is higher even than in places recognized as cities in other countries. Still, it can’t be said that all those towns are having it equally. Assessing the standard of living and quality of life in the UK as a whole, we can describe certain towns in the United Kingdom as miserable. Granted, those towns are not inherently terrible. Yet, the situation there is not acceptable in the light of what we see in other villages, towns, and cities, in the UK. In this video, we shall be discussing the 10 most miserable towns in the UK.
10. Cumbernauld, Scotland
We will start our discussion with a town in Scotland. To give you a hint; this is the first of the three Scottish towns on this list of the 10 most miserable towns in the UK. We are talking about Cumbernauld, a large town in North Lanarkshire with an area of 8.3 square miles or 21.5 square kilometers. Under normal circumstances, it should be a city because of its city-like huge population of 51,000.
It has not shed that horrible description as “Scotland’s most dismal town.” Truly speaking, this town is lacking in anything of the good things you would find in Glasgow or Edinburgh. The center of Cumbernauld has been described as the “Kabul of the North.” This says it all. Whatever you know about Kabul has its miniature in this miserable town.
9. Grimsby, England
The first of the 5 cities in England on this list is Grimsby. Maybe we should stop calling it Great Grimsby. If it were great indeed, this port town and the North East Lincolnshire administrative center on the south bank of the Humber Estuary would have all amenities that would make it rank among the best. But the comments from its residents and one-time visitors indicated that life is miserable in this place that has been voted several times as one of the worst places to live in England.
Therefore, the town of around 100,000 residents is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. Its entire area of 88 square miles (or 230 square kilometers) has been ranked the 18th worst place to live a while ago.
8. Airdrie, Scotland
Back in Scotland; we are now examining Airdrie, a town in North Lanarkshire. It also is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. The town on a plateau with an elevation of 400 feet or 130 meters above sea level is about 12 miles (or 19 kilometers) east of Glasgow city center. During its industrial heyday in the 19th century, coal mining and cotton milling were the major industries, no one could then think of this former industrial town as miserable.
However, the exit of those industries has made life there miserable to extent of being branded the most dismal town in the UK. The PR manager for the town admits it deserves its grim reputation as the worst in Scotland. The town is boring and the buildings are ugly.

Corsham is a historic market town and civil parish in west Wiltshire, England. It is at the south-western edge of the Cotswolds, just off the A4 national route, which was formerly the main turnpike road from London to Bristol, 28 miles (45 km) southwest of Swindon, 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Bristol, 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Bath and 4 miles (6 km) southwest of Chippenham. Corsham is close to the county borders with Bath and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire.
Corsham was historically a centre for agriculture and later, the wool industry, and remains a focus for quarrying Bath Stone. It contains several notable historic buildings, such as the stately home of Corsham Court. During the Second World War and the Cold War, it became a major administrative and manufacturing centre for the Ministry of Defence, with numerous establishments both above ground and in the old quarry tunnels. The early 21st century saw growth in Corsham's role in the film industry. The parish includes the villages of Gastard and Neston, which is at the gates of the Neston Park estate.
Corsham appears to derive its name from Cosa's hām, ham being Old English for homestead, or village. The town is referred in the Domesday book as Cosseham; the letter 'R' appears to have entered the name later under Norman influence (possibly caused by the recording of local pronunciation), when the town is reported to have been in the possession of the Earl of Cornwall. Corsham is recorded as Coseham in 1001, as Cosseha in 1086, and at Cosham as late as 1611 (on John Speed's map of Wiltshire). The Corsham area belonged to the King in Saxon times, the area at the time also had a large forest which was cleared to make way for further expansion.
Corsham's small town centre includes the Martingate Centre, a late 20th-century retail development, which also houses offices and a small teaching facility for Wiltshire College, a further education institution. The stately home of Corsham Court can also be found in the town centre. Standing on a former Saxon Royal Manor, it is based on an Elizabethan manor home from 1582. Since 1745, it has been part of the Methuen estate. The house has an extensive collection of Old Masters, rooms furnished by Robert Adam and Thomas Chippendale, and parks landscaped by Capability Brown and Humphry Repton. The house is open to the public all year round excluding December and is famed locally for its peacocks, which freely wander about the streets. The owner of Corsham Court in the mid-seventeenth century was the commander of the Parliamentarian New Model Army in Wiltshire; his wife built what came to be known as the Hungerford Almshouses in the centre of town. Corsham is the site of the disused entrance to Tunnel Quarry, which used to be visible off Pockeridge Drive.
Pickwick Manor was noted by architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner as an unusually impressive example of a late 17th century manor house, having remnants of a 14th-century wing. Beechfield is a late Georgian house in Middlewick Lane. It was extended in the early 1970s to provide additional accommodation. Gurneys House is another building of historical significance which now provides hotel accommodation and a restaurant. It also caters for special events such as weddings.
Middlewick House was occupied by Camilla Parker Bowles (now The Duchess of Cornwall) and her first husband between 1986 and 1995, when it was bought by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd. Pickwick has the Two Pigs, a real ale pub which is a Grade II listed building. Hartham Park is a Georgian estate that includes a rare stické court.
Corsham is connected to Bradford on Avon by the B3109 road, to Melksham by the B3353, and to Chippenham and Bath by the A4 Bath Road, a former turnpike from London to Bristol. What are the crap towns in England? The name England evokes pride, and living in England on its own, in the UK for that matter, is something to be proud of. However, it is not all English towns that you can and should be proud of. Some places are considered ‘crap towns’ in England. Please note that this position doesn’t originate from us. It is from observation of those living in those towns in England and those who have visited. And those who are living in these towns agree that theirs are among the worst towns to live in England. Yet, we can’t find any ground to refute their position based on our private findings. In this video, you will see the towns that folks refer to as the 10 ‘crap towns’ in England.
10. Blackburn
We open this discussion in a large industrial town of Blackburn located in Lancashire. It’s north of the West Pennine Moors and on the southern edge of the Ribble Valley. Blackburn is just 8 miles east of Preston and also 20 miles northwest of Manchester. The mere consideration of its location alone could give some people an idea of the reason for its being labeled as one of the ‘crap towns’ in England.
Beyond that, however, pieces of ratings Blackburn is been given in this recent past are bad. Not long ago, the author of a popular report named it one of the most segregated towns in Britain. We dare add that the tough riot is one of the results of idleness, wants, and general dissatisfaction with life reflected in how people throng turn to street begging. You’ll see youngsters bunking off school and harassing passersby for money to be used in buying a cheeseburger.
9. Oldham
Not many people will expect this old town of Oldham which is also the administrative and authority center of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham to be described as a ‘crap town.’ But what does the reality on the ground portray about this large town in Greater Manchester? It shows that the town which is about 5 miles southeast of Rochdale and 6 miles northeast of Manchester is actually one of the worst towns to live in the UK. Don’t let us relate want we ourselves have found.
Some feel that the town lacks all culture and sophistication that can be emulated.
8. Castleford
“A trip to Castleford is a real eye-opener . . . and you need to keep your eyes open because if you dare to close them, they’d have your wallet faster than you could say” said a voter who voted Castleford one of the ‘crap town’ in the UK. Coming back home in England, a town with this recognition is certainly one of the crap towns in England. This town in the City of Wakefield within the county of West Yorkshire has always got bad reviews whenever it is to be discussed.
This low standard in this town may be due in part to its being a town of kith and kin. Sentimental attachments to relationships are likely to come in the way of standardization and adherence to the due process. This Wakefield’s largest town was also rued thus “you have to wonder whether the essence of chavdom stems from bad breeding, or in the case of Castleford, possible interbreeding.”
7. Blackpool
It might take a while before Blackpool get itself off a list like this. It is a consensus member in the rank of the ‘crap towns’ in the UK. We have also seen it mentioned in several lists of the worst towns to live in England and the UK. Blackpool is also on and off of lists of the most depressing towns to live in the UK. Why then is it still boasting of being the entertainment capital of the North it claims to be when a stratum of the society actually sees it as one of the most boring places to live in the UK?
A reviewer said of this town: “While in Blackpool all you smell is weed, McDonald's, KFC - you may think it's a jolly seaside resort with candy floss and donkeys but it's a scum-bucket for the transients who come here to draw benefits in a holiday resort instead of in an inner city.” Is that not what you would expect of a place described as a ‘crap town’ in England?

Portsmouth (/ˈpɔːrtsməθ/ (listen) PORTS-məth) is a port and city in the county of Hampshire in southern England. The city of Portsmouth is a unitary authority, which is administered by Portsmouth City Council.
Portsmouth is the most densely populated city in the United Kingdom, with a population last recorded at 238,800. Portsmouth is located 70 miles (110 km) south-west of London and 19 miles (31 km) south-east of Southampton. Portsmouth is mostly located on Portsea Island; the only English city not on the mainland of Great Britain. Portsea Island has the third highest population in the British Isles after the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. Portsmouth also forms part of the regional South Hampshire conurbation, which includes the city of Southampton and the boroughs of Eastleigh, Fareham, Gosport, Havant and Waterlooville.
Portsmouth is one of the world's best known ports, its history can be traced to Roman times and has been a significant Royal Navy dockyard and base for centuries. Portsmouth was first established as a town with a royal charter on 2 May 1194. Portsmouth was England's first line of defence during an attempted French invasion in 1545 at the Battle of the Solent, famously notable for the sinking of the carrack Mary Rose and witnessed by King Henry VIII of England from Southsea Castle. Portsmouth has the world's oldest dry dock, The Great Stone Dock; originally built in 1698, rebuilt in 1769 and presently known as No.5 Dock.[6] The world's first mass production line was established at the naval base's Block Mills which produced pulley blocks for the Royal Navy fleet. By the early-19th century, Portsmouth was the most heavily fortified city in the world, and was considered the world's greatest naval port at the height of the British Empire throughout Pax Britannica. By 1859, a ring of defensive land and sea forts, known as the Palmerston Forts had been built around Portsmouth in anticipation of an invasion from continental Europe.

Waterlooville is a town in Hampshire, England, approximately 8 miles north of Portsmouth. The town is surrounded by Purbrook, Blendworth, Cowplain, Lovedean, Clanfield, Catherington, Crookhorn, Denmead, Hambledon, Horndean and Widley. It forms part of the South Hampshire conurbation. The town formed around the old A3 London to Portsmouth road. Waterlooville is twinned with Maurepas, Yvelines in France and Henstedt-Ulzburg in Germany.
The main shopping precinct is served by First Hampshire & Dorset bus routes 7/X7, 8, The X9 route has been discontinued and replaced by the D1 and D2 service which runs from Hambledon and Denmead and goes to Waterlooville town centre, and Stagecoach South services 37 and 39. The A3 Bus Corridor priority route (constructed between 2003–2007) serves the town. As of 2006, the shopping precinct is closed to all road traffic other than buses.
The nearest train station is located in Bedhampton and is on the main train route between London and Portsmouth. For a time, South West Trains provided a direct bus link to Petersfield railway station via Horndean, enabling quick access to fast London-bound trains, but now the link to Petersfield is Stagecoach service 37 via Clanfield. Havant railway station is served by Stagecoach service 39, and stations in Portsmouth by First services 7/X7, 8 and X9. For westbound trains the station at Cosham, served by the local bus services, is on the line between Portsmouth and Fareham, with regular trains to Southampton and Cardiff.
According to local legend, many of them settled there. There is no proof of this assertion. The pub was thereafter renamed in their honour and the area around the pub became known as Waterlooville. The original Heroes pub was at a crossroads near the main bus-stop. It was demolished in 1966 and replaced with a bank; a new pub took the same name and is located at the northern end of the shopping precinct.
Near the town centre is the rebuilt St George's church. During the 1950s and 1960s the surrounding area saw extensive growth in housing, when large suburban public and private housing estates were constructed. This resulted in the original Victorian church failing to cope with the population growth. Plans for a new church were started and in 1970 the new church was built on the site of the old church. Parts of the old church were retained.

Today is 31th May 2021, May Bank Holiday weekend, I took a break from busy London life and went away on vacation to Portsmouth city.
Portsmouth is a port city and naval base on England’s south coast, mostly spread across Portsea Island. It’s known for its maritime heritage and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The dockyard is home to the interactive National Museum of the Royal Navy, the wooden warship HMS Victory, where Nelson died in the Battle of Trafalgar, and HMS Warrior 1860.

The beautiful and charming area of Southsea and Portsmouth in England is a must see if you ever visit the United Kingdom. This area is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the wonderful English coast. The people are friendly and helpful, there are a ton of great places to eat and many interesting sites to see. We stayed at a wonderful boutique hotel, took a ride on a Hover Craft to the Isle of Wight, visited a charming Abbey, went high above the sky to take in the views from Spinnaker Tower, rented a car to drove the British highways to have afternoon tea with Alpacas! Needless to say, this was an adventure packed with great sites!!

Portsmouth Cycling - Quiet routes series - Black Route - Cosham to Fratton
This is the first of 10 video's riding through Portsmouth City Council's 10 designated quiet routes.
There are some good features on the routes, but also some areas that are inadequate, questionable, or not fit for purpose.
Portsmouth Cycle Forum is working with Portsmouth City Council travel teams and endeavouring to make cycling more accessible to all across our city. We know that the people working directly for the council are keen for changes to be made, but funding is limited, and the enthusiasm of some councillors is limited.
These video's hopefully will highlight that some progress is being made, and that it is possible to safely ride around Portsmouth most of the time, if you know what routes to follow. However, for the commuting cyclist, many of these routes are unsuitable if the purpose is to get from A to B as efficiently as possible.
I'd love to see your comments about the route, what you think is good, what you think could do with improvement, and what you think is completely unfit for the average cyclist. All comments will get fed back to PCC as they would also like to see improvements to the routes.
