Brewood Circular Day Hiking Staffordshire England UK

A 10 mile day hiking trip with and my partner Anne one weekend in October 2010 from Brewood, Staffordshire, England, UK. After parking the car in Brewood, off Stafford Street (grid ref SJ885089) we set off on our circular route in a wide anti-clockwise direction. Initially, we were hiking in a south west direction towards Chillington Hall and Langley Lawn Farm. After that we went south around Big Wood and over the M54 Motorway to Codsall Wood. Next we went east, skirting Codsall until we again hit the M54 close to Upper Hattons. We hiked under the motorway bridge and connected with the Shropshire Union Canal. To complete the trip we hiked northwards for about 2 miles along the canal until we returned to Brewood. This was fairly varied day hiking trip and even though there were a few long straight sections, they were still quite interesting.

We feel that his was a moderate to hard day hike because it was over 10 miles. The route was more or less flat with a few slight inclines, along solid trails, farm segments, and a few country lanes and roads. Most of route was clear and well marked. However, there were a few times we had to search for path signposts. We feel that it was a very good route for exploring the Brewood to Codsall area in South Staffordshire. Brewood is a lovely little village, well worth a visit. Hiking this area provided us with some lovely opportunities for taking photographs.

St Nicholas, Arundel

the church of St Nicholas has an interesting and unique history. Built in 1380, when Arundel was already well established as a busy international port and market town, its main church served two communities.
St Nicholas has, in effect, been two separate places of worship ever since: one Roman Catholic, the other Anglican.
It was both a monastic and a parish building: here, the nave belonged to the town and the chancel to a college of priests. This worked until 1544, but when Henry VIII swept away the monasteries, the east end of the church became the property of the Fitzalan family of Arundel Castle.
The nave is largely unaltered from its 1380 building. From around the same time are the octagonal font, made of Sussex marble.

Double Headed Castles storm the Lickey! | 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe & 7029 Clun Castle | 10/6/23

Today’s video is an epic, so sit back and enjoy 7 minutes’ worth of Castle thrash! GWR Castle classes 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and 7029 Clun Castle were hauling the doubly named 'Castle Centenarian' and 'Welsh Marches Express' tour from Tyseley on a circular tour to Hereford via Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury and the Welsh Marches, then returning via Newport, Gloucester and the Lickey Incline! This tour has seen many alterations done to its route and strikes so it was good to finally see it go ahead. It’s 100 years since the design of these awesome locomotives, and 5043 is my favourite so this was a highly enjoyable day. This run was also historically significant as it's 5043's first assault of the Lickey.

I started out at 07:50 from my local, grabbing a TfW service out of Birmingham up to Wolverhampton, and cycling up to Codsall. I set up there, unfortunately some people further down the platform obscured the view, a 196 rolled in and drowned out the sound, and the sun bleached the quality, so this really wasn't what it could have been despite the Castles' great performance. The Castles were also looking absolutely beautiful. I then caught a service over to Shifnal and set up there, once again the sun was causing me a lot of hassle. Although I got a good shot, the Castles seemed to be taking it easy and I also missed my Birmingham bound service because they were 14 late.

After this I headed back to Birmingham, changing and heading into Barnt Green, from where I cycled out to Vigo Bridge on the Lickey Incline, the steepest gradient on the mainline in Britain, a sustained 2 miles of 1/37 rise. I arrived there at 1pm, with nearly 5 hours' wait in store I did some work and enjoyed the company of @harnettyrailways, @blackcountrysteamvideos8021, @WestCountrySteamVideos, @LiamsLocos, @LukeAlfordUKsteam, @FlatCapJack52 and @jamieleestransporthub! The castles came thrashing up, I could hear them as far away as Stoke Works Jn and passing through Bromsgrove!! Thankfully the 47 was doing nothing, and with a recently wetted railhead, the castles' job was by no means easy, an equivalent load of 14 coaches!! They handled it very well, with 5043 appearing to be doing the lion's share of their assault on the 1 in 37 incline. This was amazing and I'll never forget the incredible noise of the Castle bark but soon after we were drenched in a thunderstorm lol.

The weather was strange today, up to 28* recorded with clear blue skies the whole day, although it became stormy a couple of hours before the castles' arrival. Thanks to Vintage trains, NR, everyone I met and to the drivers of the trains for putting up with our antics as we waited. Thanks particularly to the Castles and their crew, today won't have been easy! Also a massive thanks to whoever decided not to use the 47 - good decision!

I hope you enjoy as I did!

Devastated residents saddened to see ‘lovely building’ in flames

Residents and pub-goers have been left devastated following the fire at a historic pub in Burslem.

'It's a shame'

Simon Scott, 32, from Burslem said: There’s going to be a lot of speculation. It looks like it was started intentionally.

It’s a shame because it’s a listed building. They are still damping down now.

I’m pleased to see the firefighters were able to walk in there today as there might be something to salvage on the building.”

Canal Towns and Villages - Brewood

Because of the winter closure program I am unable to travel any great distance, so I've decided to take a closer look at one of our more interesting canal villages, Brewood. This beautiful Staffordshire village has a hugely diverse range of architecture styles dating from the 13th Century, and a wealth of history, and is well worth a visit.
