SOMERSET, ENGLAND ROAD TRIP◆ UK TRAVEL VLOG ◆ Wells Cathedral, Cheddar Gorge, Clarks Village, & More
[Filmed October 26, 2020] PLEASE NOTE: Somerset was in Tier 1 on the date that this video was filmed (Bristol was in Tier 2), and we had traveled from another Tier 1 area. All of the UK’s hands-face-space guidelines were followed, and Derek and I strictly adhered to all local rules and regulations.
Shopping! Cathedrals! Nature! OH MY!
Today’s vlog is PACKED with something for everyone!
As our plans to head north in the UK started to unfold, we realized how important it would be to buy a few new clothing items for a more rural trip. We (mostly me) had packed for our typical trips to the UK, which included more upscale casual clothes. However, I had started to realize we’d need a few more hiking-specific items given how rural and rainy our trip was going to get due to shifting plans to accommodate pandemic changes!
So, we headed to a UK outlet mall for the first time in our lives and shared a bit of our outlet haul!
After outfitting ourselves at Clarks Village, we drove further into the county of Somerset in England to see some sites!
We next visited Wells Cathedral in “England’s Smallest City” of Wells. Beautiful!
Then, we hurried to the Cheddar Gorge region to see some beautiful nature! Wish we had more time there, because it was stunning!
We ended our day by checking into our AirBNB in Bristol, England, and walking to a nearby delicious fine dining restaurant. One of our favorite meals of our trip, and definitely my favorite cocktail!

It's still unbelievable to me that until this year, 2021, I haven't heard about Cheddar Gorge before. How on earth is this beautiful, unique gorge not a popular site in the UK? Being the highest inland cliff, Cheddar Gorge has plenty to do: from different cliff walks, to climbing, taking your dog to a dog bakery, eating a Sunday roast, exploring some caves, and much more.

Places to see in ( Cheddar - UK )
Cheddar is a large village and civil parish in the Sedgemoor district of the English county of Somerset. Cheddar is situated on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills, 9 miles north-west of Wells. The civil parish includes the hamlets of Nyland and Bradley Cross.
Cheddar Gorge, on the northern edge of the village, is the largest gorge in the United Kingdom and includes several show caves, including Gough's Cave. The gorge has been a centre of human settlement since Neolithic times including a Saxon palace. It has a temperate climate and provides a unique geological and biological environment that has been recognised by the designation of several Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
It is also the site of several limestone quarries. The village gave its name to Cheddar cheese and has been a centre for strawberry growing. The crop was formerly transported on the Cheddar Valley rail line, which closed in the late 1960s but is now a cycle path. The village is now a major tourist destination with several cultural and community facilities, including the Cheddar Show Caves Museum.
The area is underlain by Black Rock slate, Burrington Oolite and Clifton Down Limestone of the Carboniferous Limestone Series, which contain ooliths and fossil debris on top of Old Red Sandstone, and by Dolomitic Conglomerate of the Keuper. Cheddar Gorge, which is located on the edge of the village, is the largest gorge in the United Kingdom. The gorge is the site of the Cheddar Caves, where Cheddar Man was found in 1903.
Cheddar Reservoir is a near-circular artificial reservoir operated by Bristol Water. Dating from the 1930s, it has a capacity of 135 million gallons. Cheddar Wood and the smaller Macall's Wood form a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest from what remains of the wood of the Bishops of Bath and Wells in the 13th century and of King Edmund the Magnificent's wood in the 10th.
Close to the village and gorge are Batts Combe quarry and Callow Rock quarry, two of the active Quarries of the Mendip Hills where limestone is still extracted. It was on the Cheddar Valley line, a railway line that was opened in 1869 and closed in 1963. It became known as The Strawberry Line because of the large volume of locally-grown strawberries that it carried. It ran from Yatton railway station through Cheddar to Wells (Tucker Street) railway station and joined the East Somerset Railway to make a through route via Shepton Mallet (High Street) railway station to Witham.

Visitors have been coming to Cheddar for centuries to view the magnificent limestone Gorge, reaching 500 feet in places. The ravine boasts the highest inland cliffs in the country that can be viewed from the public road running through the gorge or from foothpaths along the top of the cliffs.
Riverside walks, tearooms, restaurants, gift shops, a small toy museum and the famous Cheddar Caves can all be visited.Cheddar cheese is known throughout the the world and the traditional method of cheese making can still be seen at the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company.

I finally had a day to spare, just me myself and I, and so I hiked around the UK's largest and deepest gorge Cheddar Gorge in Somerset, via the impressive but daunting Jacob's Ladder staircase. This awesome natural sight is impressive and dizzying when stood above it, or within it and is one of the top places to visit when visiting the UK!

Breathtaking in both senses of the word!
I take you up the North and South sides of the gorge.

A Rainy Day At Cheddar Gorge - Tourist Area & Shops - Virtual Walk - February 2020 | kittikoko
Cheddar Gorge is a limestone gorge in the Mendip Hills, near the village of Cheddar, Somerset, England. The gorge is the site of the Cheddar show caves, where Britain's oldest complete human skeleton, Cheddar Man, estimated to be over 9,000 years old, was found in 1903. Older remains from the Upper Late Palaeolithic era (12,000–13,000 years ago) have been found. The caves, produced by the activity of an underground river, contain stalactites and stalagmites. The gorge is part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest called Cheddar Complex.
Cheddar Gorge, including the caves and other attractions, has become a tourist destination.
