ALLERTON BYWATER: Leeds Parish #9 of 38
This is not a small place by any stretch of the imagination. It’s Northernmost extent touches Great Preston, and it follows a diagonal route South along the banks of the River Aire to where it meets Barnsdale Road, which runs alongside the Western edge of Ledston. It’s defined as a semi-rural village, although recent developments have increased its population to almost 5,000.
This is a place that’s known mainly for two main industries – pottery kilns and coal mining, both of which are mentioned on the many local information boards around the village. The river has always played a vital part in history here too. Coal is what brought this community together – literally. It began life as several smaller communities which have all merged together over time to form one continuous urban area.
Since it has is a common place-name within Yorkshire, “bywater” was added to distinguish it from places such as Chapel Allerton and Moor Allerton. It literally refers to the village's proximity to the River Aire. This appellation is first seen its Latin form in 1258 when it was called “Allerton juxta aquam”
Coal mining in the area can be traced back to the 15th century. In the 17th century bell pit mining took place in the Southeast corner of Hollinhurst Wood. When the collieries closed, 1,060 jobs were lost and millions of tonnes of coal were abandoned underground. These days there’s none of that industry left, and remains of any workings are minimal. The Lines Way though is a reminder of the way this part of West Yorkshire once was.
After walking through the Millenium Village – a brand new development – we find the site of Ledston railway station, which wasn’t in Ledston, but rather in ALLERTON BYWATER.

You can see many canal boats, stunning architecture of the Royal Armouries building, also many interesting sights along the way. I really hope that you enjoy this journey, this will be my last video on the DJI Pocket 2 as I find it difficult to use and not completely happy with the quality o the footage.

The 36 bus from Ripon - Harrogate - Leeds has been running since the mid 1960's. It uses double-deckers with luxurious seats and free wifi. Join us on the top deck front seats for the whole route from Ripon Bus Station to Leeds Bus Station at 5x hyperlapse speed. On the way I use the stop sign feature to freeze useful roadsigns and add comments about what we're passing.
