Places to see in ( Gerrards Cross - UK )

Places to see in ( Gerrards Cross - UK )

Gerrards Cross is a town and civil parish in the South Bucks district of Buckinghamshire, England. It is in the south of the county, separated from the London Borough of Hillingdon at Harefield by Denham. London is centred 19 miles east. Geographically large and suburban, Gerrards Cross is south of Chalfont St Peter and north of Fulmer and Hedgerley. It spans foothills of the Chiltern Hills and land on the right bank of the River Misbourne — it has a central public park, Gerrards Cross Common and Bulstrode Park Camp, a preserved area of land which was an Iron Age fortified encampment.

The town has a railway station on the Chiltern main line whose operator provides a fast service from the station to London and the M40 motorway is beside woodland on the southern boundary of the civil parish and the settlement has a commercial and leisure central area which is smaller than the nearby town of Beaconsfield.

The town name is new compared with the great bulk of English towns. Gerrards Cross did not exist in any formal sense until 1859 when it was formed by taking pieces out of the five parishes of Chalfont St Peter, Fulmer, Iver, Langley Marish and Upton to form a new ecclesiastical parish. It is named after the Gerrard family who in the early 17th century owned a manor here. At that time homes which were not farms were smallholdings clustered in a hamlet in the south of an elongated parish of Chalfont St Peter. Near its centre is site of an Iron Age minor hillfort, Bulstrode Park Camp, which is a scheduled ancient monument Originally named Jarrett's Cross before the times of the Gerrard family, after a highwayman.

The large and distinctive parish church is dedicated to St. James. It was built in 1861 as a memorial to Colonel George Alexander Reid[citation needed] who was MP for Windsor and designed by Sir William Tite in yellow brick with a Byzantine style dome, Chinese looking turrets and an Italianate Campanile. In 1969 the singer Lulu married Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees in the church. The actress Margaret Rutherford is buried with her husband Stringer Davis in the St James Church graveyard. The town has its own library, various restaurants and its own cinema, the Everyman Gerrards Cross.

Independent schools include Maltman's Green School (all girls), St Mary's, Gayhurst and Thorpe House. Students of secondary school age attend either one of the local grammar schools, such as Dr Challoner's Grammar School (Boys), Dr Challoner's High School (Girls), The Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe (Boys), John Hampden Grammar School (Boys), and Beaconsfield High School (Girls) Chesham Grammar School (Co-ed), or the local Upper School, Chalfonts Community College, which is the catchment school.

On the south side of the town is the Gerrards Cross Memorial Building, on the site of the former vicarage. The building was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and unveiled in 1922 to commemorate the town's losses during the First World War. It is the only example of a Lutyens war memorial designed with a functional purpose.

Just outside Gerrards Cross, on the A40 to Beaconsfield, is Wapseys Wood landfill site, one of the largest landfill sites in the UK, operated by Veolia Landfill Ltd. It accepts up to 900,000 tonnes of non hazardous waste each year from south Buckinghamshire, London and other areas. The landfill gas produced from the waste yields over 10 megawatts of electricity which is fed into the power grid.

( Gerrards Cross - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Gerrards Cross . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Gerrards Cross - UK

The South Bucks Way - Chalfont St Peter to Great Missenden (4K)

A walk along the South Bucks Way from Chalfront St. Peter to Great Missenden.
The walk starts at Gerrards Cross Station and we walk the short distance to Chalfont St Peter to pick up the South Bucks Way. I walked the section of this beautiful route from Denham to Chalfont St Peter in the summer of 2018. The Chalfonts are known as the 'Gateway to the Chilterns' and the path leads us along a glorious tract of Chilterns countryside in the Misbourne Valley. We walk through the village of Chalfont St. Giles with its historic church and then pass along Amersham Old Town High Street.
From Amersham we walk through Little Missenden and Little Kingshill before passing through Great Missenden. The walk along the South Bucks Way ends on a hill overlooking Great Missenden at sunset.
Filmed on 31st August 2020.

Around 9.5 miles of walking in The Chilterns for this walker's return from an enforced 5 week hiatus.
After a lengthy residential start, it's essentially out along one side of the Misbourne valley, lunch in Chalfont St Giles and back along the other side of the valley.
A decent walk consisting mainly of Barley fields, some pastures and a few Beech woods. Probably best done on shorter Winter days, when the ground is reasonably dry.

Outside London locations ???????? (The Living Daylights+For Your Eyes Only+Thunderball ft. Madeline Smith)

-la Chalfont Park House a Chalfont St. Peter, raffigura la clinica Shrublands nel film Thunderball - Operazione Tuono;
-il Royal Saracen's Head Pub a Beaconsfield, è utilizzato per rappresentare l'hotel dove alloggia il maggiore Derval, sempre nel film del 1965;
-il cimitero della St. Giles Church a Stoke Poges è l'ambientazione della scena iniziale del film Solo Per I Tuoi Occhi del 1981;

ENGLISH:
In this episode we take a quick trip outside London, going out a few miles west of the capital, in the direction of Pinewood Studios, since during the production of the various 007 films locations conveniently located near the famous film studios were often used.
- the Chalfont Park House in Chalfont St. Peter, doubles the Shrublands clinic in Thunderball;
- the Royal Saracen's Head Pub in Beaconsfield, is used to depict the hotel where Major Derval stays, also in the 1965 movie;
- the cemetery of St. Giles Church in Stoke Poges is the setting of the pre-title opening scene for 1981 movie For Your Eyes Only;
- and in Stonor, finally, we find the White Pond Farm and the Stonor Park House used at the beginning of the 1987 movie The Living Daylights, respectively the place where Necros strangles the milkman and the secret service Blayden safe house where he later infiltrates.

The Other East End | Pudding Mill & Bow (4K)

Support my channel on Patreon
A walk from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park near the London Stadium past the East Bank development to Pudding Mill Lane. We cross the St. Thomas Creek of the Bow Back Rivers. From here we come to the Bow Flyover the and River Lea - one of the historic borderland areas of London.
There's an interesting historic building at 223 Bow Road which turned out to be a 17th Century listed building - more info here:
We then go through Bow Arts Alley to Grove Hall Park, once a Victorian private Asylum that features in Charles Dickens Nicholas Nickleby. The walk then goes back past Bow Church and along Bow High Street to St. Leonard's Priory. From here we go down St. Leonard's Street to Bruce Road and to Kingsley Hall in Powis Road. Kingsley Hall is where Mahatma Gandhi stayed when visiting Britain in 1931. He would take morning walks along the Sewerbank to Stratford and through Plaistow and West Ham.

Following the A12 Blackwall Tunnel Approach Road we find Bromley Hall, an early Tudor Manor House built in around 1485 and believed to be the oldest brick house in London.

Raunds Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Northamptonshire, and around 20 miles southwest of Peterborough, is the town of Raunds.

The recorded history of Raunds dates back to the 10th century. Its name is believed to have derived from the Anglo-Saxon word 'rand', meaning 'edge' or 'border'. At the heart of Raunds is St Peter's Church, which was built between the 12th and 14th centuries, and is Grade I listed.

For centuries, the main industry in Raunds was boot and shoemaking. In 1905, following a dispute over wages, bootmakers who provided footwear for the British Army went on strike. Since the end of the Second Boer War in 1902, demand for army boots had fallen, and with it came a drop in wages. After the strike of 1905 proved unsuccessful, a local councillor organised a march of 115 men representing a regular army unit to highlight the plight of the bootmakers. From Raunds they marched all the way to London where they were greeted by a crowd of around 10,000 at Hyde Park. On their return home, a crowd of around 5,000 turned up at The Square in Raunds - which was larger than the entire population of the town at the time.

The impact of the Raunds March remains a matter of debate. Negotiations between the War Office and the unions that followed resulted in the setting up of the Board of Conciliation and Arbitration, which helped reduce future price fluctuations. On the 100th anniversary of the march in 2005, a re-enactment took place featuring 115 locals dressed in the clothes of the time. This march, however, only got as far as the outskirts of Raunds.

Between 1866 and 1959, a railway station served Raunds. It was situated on the Kettering, Thrapston and Huntingdon Railway at around the midpoint between the western terminus at Kettering and the eastern terminus at Huntingdon. Today the main public transport connection to and from Raunds is a bus route between the town and Northampton.

Broadcaster David Frost spent part of his childhood in Raunds.

Tring Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Hertfordshire, and around 30 miles northwest of central London, is the town of Tring.

Geographically Tring is situated at the edge of the Chiltern Hills where the ancient Icknield Way crosses the Roman Akeman Street. The name 'Tring' is believed to come from Old English 'Tredunga' or 'Trehangr', meaning 'slope where trees grow'.

In 1315 Tring was granted a market charter by Edward II. At the heart of the town stands St Peter and St Paul's Church, which is thought to date back to circa 1100. The edifice as it stands today was rebuilt between the 13th and 15th century.

In 1633, the great grandfather of George Washington - John Washington, was born in Tring. In 1656 he left the town to go on a trading voyage to Virginia but after a shipwreck on the Potomac River he remained in Virginia, married and started a family.

In 1682 Tring Manor House was designed by Christopher Wren. Situated just over a mile east of the town centre, it was built for Colonel Henry Guy, Groom of the Bedchamber to King Charles II. In the late 19th century the Manor became the home of a branch of the Rothschild banking family, who would go on to hold considerable influence over Tring. The distinctive building on stilts at the intersection of the High Street and Akeman Street is Tring Market House. This was built in 1898 in the Tudor revival style and was funded primarily by the Rothschilds. Walter Rothschild built a private zoological museum in Tring. This housed one of the largest collection of stuffed animals in the world. Since 1937 it has been under the control of the Natural History Museum in London.

In 1793 work began on the construction of the Grand Junction Canal, reaching Tring by 1799. This would later form part of the Grand Union Canal which connects London to Birmingham and Leicester. The arrival of the canal brought a boost to Tring as goods could be transported over the waterways. In 1837 the railway arrived in Tring courtesy of the London and Birmingham Railway. Today this is situated on the West Coast Main Line which runs from London Euston to Glasgow and Edinburgh via the Midlands and North West. Trains to London take around three quarters of an hour from Tring. This would make it ideally situated as a commuter town if not for a key caveat - that the railway station is situated just short of two miles away from the town centre.

Following the death of Charles Rothschild in 1923, the banking family's estate in Tring was gradually sold off. In 1945 Tring Manor House was leased, and later sold, to an independent performing arts school. Today it has been repurposed as a luxury hotel known as Pendley Manor.
