Exploring Culture in Hainaut Province, Belgium [things we discovered about Belgian Culture]
Hainaut Province in Belgium is an area rich with culture and heritage.
This region isn't short of Belgian culture, which boasts several UNESCO World Heritage-listed properties, areas and constructions. To add to this, Hainaut is also home to historical events on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Along with the area's multiple well-preserved castles, the historical city centres in the region are also a must-visit.
We visited Hainaut to explore the cultural scene and were quite taken aback by the variety and the uniqueness of the area. Since we wanted to explore large parts of Hainaut, we booked a hotel in the city of Mons, hired a car and drove our way through the region in search of a cultural experience and Belgian traditions.
We were not disappointed!

Matt and I took a day trip to Charleroi, a former mining city in Belgium that has fallen on tough economic times in recent decades. A few years ago, a Dutch newspaper claimed that Charleroi is the World's ugliest city, and plenty of other media have jumped on that bandwagon. So we explored the city to see if it really id the most ugly city in the World.
Sure, we found plenty of ugliness and scars of a deprived past and present. But we also found some pleasant corners of the city and a thriving arts culture!

In this top 5 list you find: a traditional 'bouillon' style restaurant in an old train station that's been open since 1896, the most fashionable cafe in Paris that's still known as the place to see and be seen, the first 24 hour restaurant in Paris that hasn't closed since 1947 (where Julia Child loved to eat), the cafe in Montmartre that Amélie Poulain 'worked at' in the movie Amélie, and the cheaper little sister to a Michelin Star restaurant. You can't go wrong with these Parisian gems!

A random Wallonian travel vlog where I show you the joys of the TEC buses, Fosses-La-Ville (or as I prefer, Fosses: La Ville) and some of the particularities in and around the outskirts of The World's Ugliest City, Charleroi. Welcome to Robbie Travels and today we will visit Charleroi Belgium, the largest city in the region of Wallonia and will discover what is often overlooked as a tourist destination.
Among Belgians, the former mining town of Charleroi is generally viewed as derelict, poor and polluted because it has one of the highest crime rates in the country and one in four inhabitants are unemployed.
It certainly does not have as much to offer as widely visited Brussels and Bruges but what it lacks in mass appeal, Charleroi makes up for with its character.
An industrial city with an interesting and honest history, Charleroi will intrigue anyone looking for more than just glitz and glamour in their travel destinations.

The airport located here is called Brussels-Charleroi, The canal that connects the city with the largest waterways. The city named after the Spanish king Charles II, which is why the locals are often referred to as Carolos.
